20 week scan later this morning..

Morning all Smile
I have my 20 week scan later this morning and am feeling really anxious about it.

I've been told I'll be having my bp + urine check at the appointment and also my whooping cough vaccine but it just seems very strange as I'm not sure what to expect/how it'll all work at the appointment

I obviously have the usual worry about everything being okay but also I'm unsure whether I should be wearing a mask and/or gloves in the hospital?

Any reassurance or information would be greatly appreciated

Hi,

I've been for many scans during this crazy time and since the lockdown I have found the sonographers to be more attentive, engaging and just truly lovely. So they'll probably do your scan first (whilst you have a full bladder) then afterwards they'll get you to do a urine sample. Then you'll get called along to check your bp and probably get the vaccination last. I've never had to wear gloves or a mask at the hospital, just when seeing my midwife at my local GP did I wear a mask but that was in the first couple of weeks in lockdown. The only request that I've had from both is to use the hand sanitizer.

I wish you the best of luck for your scan, are you finding out what you're having? Smile My hospital has also been giving out free extra scan pictures too, I think it's their way of compensating for the current situation we're in so that's nice. It's also lovely to see your little baby again too. I hope it goes well for you x

@Hodge85 Thank you so much for your reply, it's been really helpful, my mind likes to go into overdrive about worrying about it all and the unknown!
We're keeping the gender a surprise Smile** this is baby no.3 and each time we've not found out (although the temptation has definitely been there!)
Thanks for the info on photos too as I meant to ask about that too, my 12 week scan was during the first week of lockdown and there was lots of confusion at the appointment over whether they were charging for scans still or not, they ended up putting an out of service sign on machine though and giving them for free, I'll take some money with me just incase anything has changed at my local hospital since then though
Thanks again and congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Aww thanks and you too @Lexi92! I bought just 1 scan picture token last time and they gave me 5, although none of his little face as he's been keeping that a surprise and hides it at every opportunity haha! Best of luck today, let me know how you get on Smile x

Good luck! How exciting

I have my dating scan next week at a walk-in not the hospital
Having to get a taxi so will wear a mask and then see whether they provide one or I can stomach wearing it there (severe sickness!)
I'm taking some money for photos just incase but I've heard other counties are free at the moment

Personally I prefer to take a sample with me, I order tubes from amazon it just saves the fath when there

Usually they scan first, then you wait until called then they'll t as ke your sample and test that, do BP etc and then give vaccine
That was my usual anyway with dd and I had various clinics and scans every couple of weeks

If they want you to wear a mask they will provide it, use sanitiser whenever you see it, jump in shower and wash clothes when home again is my preference too re covid precautions and mask on public transport. Hand sanitiser in bag if you have one and if taking water with you just give the bottle a wash when you come home rather than keep using after

Wishing you all the best

Best of luck with your scan OP.... I had my 20 week during lockdown (and a rescan at 23 weeks) and all was absolutely fine.
It was very quiet, staff were in PPE and everyone was lovely and reassuring.
Hopefully you have a positive experience too.

@Hodge85 @Pygmyseahorse @sel2223 thank you all for your lovely, reassuring comments, I received a call not long after I posted this from the hospital asking if I could come for the scan tomorrow rather than today due to them being short staffed, another night of feeling anxious about it all but really appreciate your advice and sharing your experiences with me it's definitely helped ease my concerns, I'll keep post updated tomorrow once I've seen baby Smile

Aww no bless you that's feels so unfair, but try to think positively that it's a day not a week or longer and it's for good reason. You don't want to be left waiting around or have a rushed appointment.

All the best, will be thinking of you tomorrow

I had my 20 week scan in February before lockdown. I was so so nervous and the unit was absolutely chaotic (kids screaming, no where to sit etc), that combined with my full bladder made my anxiety worse! I have been to hospital for GTT in lockdown and it was such a nicer experience! Quiet, personal, lots of space to gather your thoughts. So maybe there is an up side to going during the restrictions!

Hope it goes well @Lexi92. I have my 20w scan early next week. Think I’m more nervous about this than I was the 12w one!

Just an update for you ladies, had scan this morning and all went really well, baby growing beautifully and I was made to feel really at ease by all of the staff
The lady did mention that baby is in a breech position atm, should I be worried or has baby got plenty of time to turn still?
Thank you again for your lovely replies Smile

Plenty of time to turn, don't worry. If they are still in that position in a couple of mpnths, visit the spinning babies website and start doing the positions on there to turn them.

@Lexi92 so pleased your scan went well!
No need to worry about baby position yet as they are only small at 20 weeks so turning and moving constantly.
It only really becomes significant after about 30/32 weeks.
