How did your morning sickness start?

Hello ladies,

I am 5+3 today, first pregnancy. I have been getting waves of mild nausea for the last few days now. Not massively inconvenient but enough to make me stop what I am doing and sit down for a second.

I keep anticipating that this will turn into full blown morning sickness, but I'm aware that everybody experiences morning sickness differently. Some people have nausea but are never sick, some people vomit multiple times daily and some don't have it at all!

I am just wondering - you ladies who are currently pregnant or have been previously - how and when did your morning sickness start? Was it sudden (like, a switch went one day and you were suddenly really sick) or did it come on gradually?

Thanks!

I was mostly nauseous without vomming. The vomming actually made me feel better when I did. So anyway, mostly nausea but fatty or spicy food made me sick. After first trimester I was sick every single morning til I had her but didn't feel sick. Much more bearable tbh!

Very suddenly.

All three pregnancies around 7 weeks and just threw up for the first time all of a sudden. Which then didn’t stop for months 😭

Like PP, it started suddenly for me around 6 weeks. I felt constantly, intensely nauseous right up until I was around 17 weeks. There was no let up for me, I felt so sick 24/7, it was horrendous. However, I have only actually vomited twice throughout the whole pregnancy (I'm 36+6 now).

I got antiemetics from my GP but they didn't work so I just had to ride it out. Felt like it was never going to end but it did and it was such a huge relief!

I started slowly, feeling nauseous bang on 7 weeks but wasn't actually sick for a good few days! Im mainly sick on an empty stomach or if I'm too hot (now 10 weeks), but I do usually feel better for a little while if I've been sick. The days where it's just full nausea are the worst 😖

I felt really tired and cold to begin with from 5pm..and then I found I couldn't eat anything..vegetables tasted really bitter and any smell would make me feel really sick. The nausea would get worse from 8pm and I'd have to go to sleep..and then it got worse from there. All day nausea and throwing up after brushing my teeth and sometimes in the evenings after 11pm. I'm 16 weeks and it's a bit better now. I can finally eat some things but I still feel queasy in the evenings. I started using kids toothpaste and still do as it was the only thing that worked

Mine was just as you describe currently and never really changed . Just waves of nausea . I was really anxious of throwing up and luckily never did. Hunger made it worse so I kept a few crackers in my bag if I went out and kept to light meals and frequent snacking . Congratulations on your pregnancy

I’ll add it was the same with both pregnancies

With my last pregnancy it came on gradually , peaked between weeks 8-10. I constantly felt hung over and it was horrible 😩

With my current pregnancy I didn’t get any nausea.

Mine started like yours did at around 5 weeks, wasn’t actually vomiting until around 8 when it got a huge amount worse (was set off by everything) and found myself vomiting atleast 8 times a day up until around 15 weeks. Almost none existent now at 17 weeks so there is light at the end of the tunnel! Smile

This is my first and I am about 5weeks and starting to feel sicky throughout the day and agree it’s better if I have small snacks and not an empty stomach. Today I haven’t felt sick all day which actually makes me worry x

Around 4 weeks, vomiting every day, multiple times often, until past 12 weeks. With both pregnancies

It started with an aversion to flavoursome food... we went to a Chiquitos and I couldn’t help but order a simple burger and chips because nothing else appealed to me, which was so not normal for me. Then over the next few days it developed into mild nausea and a week later it was full blown horrible nausea and aversion to everything but beige food for the next 7 or 8 weeks. Worst I’ve ever felt and it’s what makes me put off TTC again any time soon.

Keep a snack by your bed and have it before you get out bed. Really helps.

Initial nausea then at 6 weeks I was in the work kitchen having a conversation which I swiftly left and threw up in the work toilets. Very glam. I then threw up once a week u till about 17 weeks and randomly once at 34 weeks.

Nausea was pretty bad for the first 12 weeks.

Thanks everybody for your responses so far, it really does confirm that everybody's experience is different!

I really hope that this doesn't turn into full-on vomiting. I have also been getting a lot of headaches - really painful ones right behind my eyes (almost like when I used to get migraines when I was a teenager). These have been making me feel sick too :(

Did anybody else get headaches?

Started feeling sick between 4-5. Only had one day where I vomited three times. Other times, I have felt close. Making sure I don't have an empty stomach helps. I woke up at 4am the other day and couldnt get back to sleep. So I forced myself to eat half a banana before going back to sleep. Worried about it getting worse. Had a couple of days this weekend completely floored by it.

Mostly overwhelming nausea from about 5weeks (three pregnancies)
I almost never visit anyway for any reason so probably not typical.
Actual vomiting when triggered by smell or hunger between weeks 7-13.

I normally suffer from headaches anyway but with my first pregnancy I barely got any .

With my current pregnancy ( 15 weeks ) I’m struggling a bit . Ibeprophen is the only thing that helps but you can’t take that while pregnant so I’ve been taking them away naturally. I find drinking lots of water , a cool shower , an ice pack on my neck , massaging my sore muscles and a coffee helps . I take paracetamol sometimes and it takes the edge off a bit .

Started feeling a bit off at week 5, by week 7 I felt that I was constantly on the edge of throwing up and I'm 12 weeks now and I'm still the same, though week 9 was so bad I had to take a week of work even though I was working from home! It's like bad motion sickness crossed with a hangover, plus severe food aversions, even the thought of pork products makes my stomach roll. Lying still calmed it down a little, not having an empty stomach works a bit too. I don't actually want to eat anything but potatoes, which doesn't really work for breakfast. I've never actually thrown up thankfully but I've been burping a lot, which seems to make it better. I don't know, I'm so fed up of the whole thing and I'm desperately clinging to the idea it will all get better after week 12.

Mine started with very occasional bouts of nausea from 5 weeks but really cranked up around week 7. It was a weird combination of feeling extreme hunger pangs but when I got food I would be too queasy to swallow. Never threw up (though I'm emetophobic and most emets have extraordinary willpower at surpressing it) but just felt constantly seasick, headachey and bloated for 3 weeks.

The silver lining is that it got better quite suddenly around week 10, and I was able to work and travel again fairly normally. I was extra cautious to carry crackers, water and snacks with me all the time and that worked quite well. However the morning sickness didn't go away 100% until week 20 (though the final few weeks was also very much like the beginning...sporadic bouts of nausea). After 20 weeks things were fantastic and the sickness didn't come back at all near the end of the third trimester which it does for some women.

Mine started with an aversion to the washing up. I couldn’t look at the empty plates, when we’d eaten, without feeling sick. I still don’t like looking at my plate when I’ve finished my dinner.

I don't really remember how it started but the nausea was one of my first symptoms so it was early.
The came the actual sickness from about 6 weeks to 14/15 weeks. I still had occasional sickness until around week 20 but nothing like the first trimester.

I suffered quite badly with nausea and vomiting in my first pregnancy. I was vomiting sometimes 5 or 6 times a day but always made me feel better pretty much straight after. The vomiting and Nausea stopped when I was about 11 or 12 weeks then I started to get headaches and heartburn. This time round I am now 10 weeks and have been feeling nauseous on and off but only actually had 2 small vomits. But I have been suffering with headaches and dizziness at the same time which I think is making me feel worse. But this time I can pretty much eat normally, whereas last time i couldn't eat hardly anything and had loads of food aversions

My nausea started at 6 weeks, I woke up and was nauseous until ~6pm this continued everyday and I was occasionally sick by 7 weeks I could barely keep anything down during the day but evenings were OK. I was put on anti sickness tablets at 9 weeks which stopped the sickness so I could keep food and drinks down more. The nausea went at 11 weeks, came back for a week at 16 weeks and then returned at 25 weeks. I'm now 28 weeks, it's not as bad as the first trimester. An average day I'm mildly nauseous but I some days I need the anti nausea medication and struggle to eat and drink.

With my current pregnancy I felt sick from cd30 , I'm 8-9weeks now and haven't been sick but just feel very nauseas and tired, gone off most food which doesn't help because eating does help settle the nausea for me.
