Pregnancy

How long does it take to regain your figure after birth?

How long will it take for my pregnancy stomach to return to normal after giving birth - is it a matter of weeks? Months?

I'm due to give birth soon and have put on about 1 and a half stone during this pregnancy, so I've probably gone up at least one dress size at a guess.

I don't have any clothes to wear post-birth except my maternity stuff, which will be quite baggy round the stomach, and my pre-pregnancy wardrobe, which will probably no longer fit!

And... I can't really afford to buy a whole new wardrobe right now!

It really depends everyone is different. Some people months or more. I left hospital in my pre pregnancy jeans but I know that's not the norm!

I gave birth 11 days ago and my tummy has pretty much gone but not everyone is the same, it really depends on the individual! I also EBF so think this is another reason for the quick weight loss although I didn't put a lot of weight on when pregnant..was all baby x

I'm still working on it... my youngest is 21.

@mumma2b2020 how much weight did you put on during pregnancy (if you don't mind me asking!)

@MaidenMotherCrone Grin

I'm worried I will have nothing to wear!

Stomach went back to normal within about 8 weeks. I was back in normal stretchy jeans by then. Bum and thighs on the other hand...

I was back in my pre pregnancy clothes about 10 days later. I didn't really put any weight on other than baby/waters, and same as @mumma2b2020, I ebfd which I think helped a lot - certainly felt it when my uterus was getting back to normal anyway! I did however put a shit load of weight on when I started ds on solids. He didn't and still bloody doesn't eat that much and I hated wasting his food so I ate it. He's 4.5y now and I've just about lost that weight too, although lockdown is not helping me maintain 😭🙄

I lost weight and my abdomen went pretty flat very quickly- I was breastfeeding non stop! Ended up slimmer and lighter than when I got pregnant after about 4 weeks, and I put on 2.5 stone during pregnancy. Stopped breastfeeding at 6 weeks, carried on eating the amount I was working through to keep my supply up....and put on 4 stone!

Still 4 stone heaver 3 years later. Nothing to do with pregnancy, just that DD and I love a lunch out and cake!

I had two within 2 years so its hard to say.. probably around 4 months after having the second?

I'm 6 weeks PP and my stomach is now flat but I am one dress size bigger. I've gone back down to a 36 back from a 40 back (excessive fluid gain) if that's any help! Don't put too much pressure on yourself. A daily walk and plenty of healthy food will do the trick.

I left hospital in my pre-pregnancy jeans but I also left without my 4.4lb baby. I would rather have had a big bump! Still have a small overhang over my jeans and that’s ten years later but my own fault as have done nothing about it.

Wow you lucky people, some of you were really quickly back in shape, mine took ages and ages Confused I'm quite petite though and had a massive bump and got quite a lot of stretch marks so maybe it depends on how stretched you were. I also had quite bad separated muscles so maybe it depends on how much your muscles separate Hmm I guess the message is everyone is different x

It depends on many factors

How fit you are
How you feed baby
How active you are
How much excess weight you’re already carrying

But remember it’s not a race & there aren’t any prizes 😊

Good luck and best wishes

2 pregnancies, 2 massive baby boys and 2 stomach muscle separations that require physio. Five years on and still nowhere near back to normal and physio says it will probably not get any better..... I have 2 beautiful boys to show for it though so I try not to stress too much about it!

Honestly, I don't think it's healthy to ask this question.

Everyone is so very different.

I lost 5st in pregnancy due to sickness and so never really put on any weight or needed maternity clothes, but a c section left me bloated and odd shaped for months.

Every will have a different experience so please don't start imagining time scales

Even if your tummy flattens, I think your shape in general changes. I've just about accepted my changed body shape. My youngest is 23 this year.

About 5 years! Although when I finally stopped BF and then actually got around to losing the weight I ended up with a better figure than pre-baby. I'm now more in proportion.

If you have a c section it’ll be different again.

My first was natural and it took 6 weeks to get back to pre pregnancy. Second was c section and that’s just completely fucked how my stomach looks and it was 6 months before I could do any meaningful exercise. I know weigh less than I did before but my stomach is awful.

The best friend's guide to pregnancy says 9months up, 9 months down and I would agree with that.

I was back in my jeans on day 10 (they weren’t exactly skintight) but it took me two years to lose the jelly belly.

I put 5 stone on with my 1st. I was a stone lighter than when I started (ie lost 6 stone from giving birth) while breastfeeding and went to a size 6/8 after around 6 months. I had a flat stomach but as soon as I started to put some weight back on, I have a tummy. Diastasis recti here too so it will never be great. Your body does change I find, but I can honestly say it doesn't really bother me, it could be a lot worse.

It depends on so many factors it your tummy will go down faster
-the younger you are
-the taller you are
-if you breastfeed
-the fewer babies you have
-if you had a vaginal birth with no complications
-if you were able to exercise during pregnancy
-if you are able to exercise after pregnancy
-if you are lucky in the genetics department to have skin that can bounce back instead of staying stretched out
Etc.

There are so many factors, it is different for everyone.

I know people that are young, breastfed, were fit and healthy, who never were the ‘same’ again and unfit, middle of road sizing ladies who lost the baby weight and more.
It isn’t something you can predict.
Also afterwards everything is in the wrong place, your hips have widened, you might gave injuries - there is no way to call it!
