Just wanted to know your opinions,

I was told that it was very good for mother to eat placenta after giving birth because its rich in the nutrients that help you recover?
was also told that the hospital offers to cook if for you?

Just wanted to know opinions and experiances for me to make up my mind whether or not i should(not sure about the thought but apparently tastes very good)

ok, if you want to eat it, it is a really personal choice

the hospital will not cook it for you

they will give it you to take home if you want it..then it is up to you what to do with it

i have heard of it being eaten to help the mother regain strength after birth, and also using a piece of it to distill a homeopathic rememdy for post natal depression

i personally did not want to eat mine or take it home...i know of women who have taken it home and planted it in the garden with a special tree or plant over it

I asked to look at mine with both DS and DD and each time the mw's looked at me as if I was mad!

Was amazed at it for nourishing my babies - was bigger than I imagined - loooked like a big piece of liver

Had no desire to eat it though.

why would you eat it? would you eat your own poo? drink your own wee? eat your scabs or bogeys?

get a bloody takeaway if you're that hungry! pmsl at the idea that ' the hospital offers to cook it for you' ? yeah, cos they have so much free time for recipe planning....

parp!

I have heard about people eating it as well. I can't imagine doing it myself though. It may be very high in nutrients but could you imagine frying up a bit of your insides and then eating it after all the drama of giving birth!???

That is assuming you would fry it? Or would you roast it? boil it? so gross

Oh my god I thought you were joking about serving suggestions until I clicked on that link!

That is the craziest thing I have ever read in my life.

I am guessing that no-one goes for placenta carpaccio.

I am pretty sure dogs eat it theirs.
Seems to make sense from a nutritional point of view, but probably not my fancy. But if you feel like it, go ahead!

I think nutritionally you can get everything you need from food rather than needing to eat it.

If you want to of course that is entirely up to you, but you don't need to.

Though don't do as I saw on one programme and serve it to your friends and family. Personally I think that is going a little too far and they may become more distant after that

PBirdy · 20/06/2007 15:16

I ask this in all seriousness - why does it make sense to eat it from a nutritional point of view? Is it higher in vitamins and minerals than normal healthy food? Why?

PBirdy · 20/06/2007 15:17

LOL

Can you imagine serving it up to your friends and family!??!?!? They say mmm, this smells good and you say, oh yeah, that's my placenta.

Sorry, I find the whole concept hilarious

The reason animals eat theirs and why people used to eat theirs is because although it is easy for us to get very nutritional food, it used to be difficult (in ye olden days) for people to get it and it can be difficult for animals. So for them it was a good idea (not saying it is a bad idea now but we have a choice of other nutritional foods).

I saw the programme where someone served their placenta up to family and friends... wasn't it with Hugh Fairly-Long-Name? Does make me chuckle, you could not tell them until they've finished...ewwwww! Reminds me of the Friends episode when they all tried Ross' ex wife's breast milk.

M2b - so are you going to do it?

Report
Glimmer · 20/06/2007 15:37

Some of us might find it gross, but when you think of it, does it makes sense to let a perfectly good and fresh piece of meat go bad
(it probably will get incinerated as medical waste using resources) and then you go out and buy liver from an animal (possibly exposed to all kinds of hormones etc) and lots of resources went into raising that animal. Again, I am not proposing it, but find that in last instance it would make sense to use it. At least it's your own hormones and proteins....

As for your question -- I have no idea if it is especially nutrisious or if it is not, since I beleive the placenta deterorates toward the end of 40 weeks. But certainly other mammals don't let it go to waste. BTW I do not intend to cook it, was just thinking about your question.
