Anyone measured big bump-wise and gone on to have a smaller baby?

My baby is predicting to measure well over 10lbs if it carries on on the same trajectory over the next few weeks.

I’m hoping it’s just my own weight gain and not actually a massive baby....

I know the bump measurement isn’t necessarily accurate - has anyone had off-the-scale bump measurement and gone on to have a smaller than predicted baby?!

I had a cracked rib at 28 weeks because the baby was lying awkwardly under my rib cage. I was told to expect a very big baby as this had happened at only 28 weeks. He was born at 38 + 4 and weighed only 6lb 8oz. I know my situation was a bit different but just goes to show nothing is certain. Good luck with everything OP xx

I was predicated a big baby, 8lb plus. 6lb 7oz...

@lampert - I'm having the same concerns. 28 weeks and if baby carries on tracking on the same line it will be 9lbs11! I'm overweight so like you, hoping it's my weight gain and not baby!

Thank you all. Eeeeeeek I don’t want to have a humongous baby....

No but just to throw this in the mix I was the opposite , small bump , big baby!

Just to say, even if you do have a bigger baby, you will most likely be fine! Our bodies are fairly marvellous like that, you’d be amazed what you’re capable of! Wishing you all the best Smile

I personally think the bump measuring is rather vague - I'm measuring big (I'm generally slim) but know that I have too much fluid, baby was on 4th percentile 3 weeks ago, growth scan tomorrow. As you can see, measuring big doesn't necessarily mean big baby.

DS2 was predicted to be over 11lb. He was 9lb7 so while not at all small, not quite the bruiser I was expecting!! Funnily enough, the maternity ward at our (admittedly small) hospital was full the day he was born and not one baby was under 9lb! Hoping this one might be slightly smaller.

Massive bump, plus 8lb baby predicted, DD was 5lb 14 at exactly 40 weeks....

Haven't been in this situation myself but looked after plenty of women in labour who've been predicted big babies and given birth to 7lb-ers :) I was just talking to a fellow midwife from a different hospital yesterday who said her hospital is phasing out bump measurements because they're so unreliable and cause women so much unnecessary anxiety.
Also PPs are right - your body is very clever at growing babies of a size it can give birth to :)

Had a 5lb at term. My midwife asked if I had the right baby as I'd been HUUUUGE.

Good grief. Are they still frightening women with this nonsense?

Back in the mid 90s I was told, in very uncaring and terrifying terms, that “this is no good. This baby is too big. You won’t be able to have it properly.” Exact words used.

I was so upset and scared (first baby). I asked if the baby might just come early as it was big enough and she laughed in my face.

DS was born at 37 weeks, 7lbs 14, no stitches, no gas and air, no pain relief, 9 hour labour that was less painful than toothache.

Please tell me they are not still doing this to pregnant women these days.

I was told my son was going to be 11lbs when he was born and that I was always growing 2weeks ahead on scans so had to have them every 2weeks from 32weeks .... they induced me on my due date as they was scared he was going to get stuck .
A emergency c section later due to having contractions each minute ( total nightmare)
And I ended up with a 7lbs 9oz baby 😂 xxx

I was expected to have a big baby. I had a huge bump. Baby was 6lb 9oz

I measured ahead. Ds was 7lb.

It’s very, very inaccurate

I was the opposite way round, very neat and trim bump that measured 2cm under the whole way through, ended up with 7.8lbs who was biggest of my antenatal group! It’s all guesswork I think, try not to panic Smile
Also, from what I hear big babies do tend to be better sleepers because their tummies are bigger, they can take more milk so settle well. Not sure if it’s true but worth clinging onto the idea!

My DS estimated weight was 10lb 2, actual weight 8lb 7

Dd1 estimated weight 7lb 2, actual 9lb 9

I can't recall dd2 estimate but she weighed 9lb 5

I was the opposite too.. my bump was tiny I was told to prepare for a very small baby so I bought all early baby sleepsuit and they brought an incubator into delivery... and dd1 was born at 9lb and nothing fitted - they had to bring sleepsuits from the special care nursery Blush
I think they can only estimate the size of your baby and very often get it wrong. I think your bump is definitely more to do with your height and size too, my sil had the biggest bump I had ever seen but her ds was under 8lb - she’s very short normally so I don’t think there was really anywhere for her bump to go except out the way, I’m tall with a long back so never had a big bump at all.

Opposite for me. I was measuring v small (33 weeks, when I was 38 weeks). DC was born 3 days past due date weighing 8lb7oz.

With both of mine I measured full term by 36 weeks 🙈 luckily they both came early spontaneously- DS 7lb 9oz at 36+6 and DD 8lb 5oz at 38 weeks exactly. The midwife kept saying to trust my body and I do think tit knew what I could manage so you may find you give birth a little earlier.

I measured big with both of mine, they were 6lb14oz and 7lb12. I carried all at the front which I think made me measure bigger, and also fluid was on the higher side of normal

I've just started a thread about this too. I'm 32 weeks and have gone from measuring around the 50th percentile to 95 and am borderline for nearly having GDD (sugars of 7.5 when 7.8 is the cut off). I'm a size 8-10, about 5'4 and never been overweight before or anything. This is my first and I'm getting really anxious about having a huge baby that I won't be able to give birth to properly Sad.

Yes I measured over the top line and DD ended up being only 7lbs. I'm fairly petite and have a short torso so think she just had nowhere to go but out!

Not quite but I measured 50th centile throughout with dd1 and she was just below the 10th.

Predicted 10lbs, born 40 weeks at 7lbs.
