Help - DS has chickenpox and I’m pregnant!

Hi all, just looking for a bit of reassurance as I’m sitting here at work worrying. My DS, who is 2 has just been sent home from nursery with suspected chickenpox. We have an appointment with our GP later this afternoon to confirm but what is making me panic is the fact I’m 7 weeks pregnant. I am pretty sure I’ve had CP when I was a child and had shingles fairly recently (which I know is a reactivation of the CP virus), but I’m still frantic. My immune system hasn’t been the strongest lately. Has anyone else experienced this situation and what did you do? Thanks so much.

If you had shingles you have definately had CP already. Try not to worry, you'll be fine. The GP will be able to reassure you later.

When I was pg with DS1 my GP tested my immunity and I was immune even though neither my mother nor I had any recollection of my having had c pox. I expressed surprised at the time and the GP said over 90% of the adult uk population has immunity to chicken pox. Try not to worry and see the GP as soon as you can.

Thank you so much to both of you for your responses, they are very reassuring. I really hope the doctor can fully set my mind at ease as I’m a bit of a wobbly mess!

It’s only a risk if you haven’t had chickenpox before. I called my GP (in a similar panic) and asked her when I was pregnant and realised I’d been in contact with someone with chickenpox.
If you’ve had shingles then you’ve had chickenpox aka it’s fine.

If you have had chickenpox before then there is 0 risk. It's a lot better for your ds to have it now than when you have a newborn around to catch it!

Do you think you should seek some help for your anxiety?

This happened to me. Quick blood test at doctors to show I was not immune and then an injection to give me immunity. All was then fine. I think that you can't get shingles without having CP. Check that out and if thats not the case then get onto your GP.

I'm a teacher and in both my pregnancies there was an outbreak of chicken pox in the class Hmm

Your GP can check your immunity but if you have had chicken pox already you will be fine.

You can not get shingles if you haven't had chicken pox so you are fine

My partners daughter had chicken pox when I was 3 or 4 months pregnant and I was absolutely fine, as is Bubba. I'd already had chicken pox as a child myself, if you've already had it you'll be absolutely fine :-)

I'm not sure it will be of much help now but I think there is a chicken pox vaccination you can get (read it on MN actually!). You have to pay for it yourself but perhaps a suggestion for the future?

Hope you don't catch anything, OP! I'm sure your midwife can advise if you are still worried.

DS1 had chicken pox when I was first trimester with DS2. I had only had chicken pox mildly as a child and. All was fine.
