Making DH do pregnancy sympathy days?

Elmosmum · 16/12/2017 17:22

We're away on an all inclusive holiday and I'm pregnant. We'd booked it up before finding out we were expecting.

We had a discussion before coming away where DH agreed to do 3 x random pregnancy sympathy days out of a 10 day holiday. The reason for this is I want him to understand for just 3 days what it's like being pregnant and the types of things he'd need to think about.

So, no alcohol, no caffeine, no cigarettes, no undercooked eggs, no soft cheese, no cured meats, no rare steaks or pink lamb or mercury rich fish or dubious shellfish. I can't make him have morning sickness, bloating or tiredness though!!

I must add that DH is up for it if a bit wary!! Grin

Do you think this is a genius idea or AIBU!?

Uneccessary in my opinion but if he’s happy ...

I'm assuming this is light hearted?!

Confused It’s an utterly bizarre idea. I can’t understand why you’d want that, or where the random figure of three out of ten days has come from. He isn’t pregnant and he never will be.

Has he been unsupportive or done something to earn this punishment?

It wouldn't have crossed my mind to do this. Especially not on holiday where had paid and would just want to relax. My husband is allergic to nuts and coeliac and has never suggested i need to do a "sympathy day". Its just luck of the draw having dietary restrictions.

Obviously totally up to you guys though and if he's up for it fair dos.

Hmm what about the excess weight etc., im sue you could hire one of those weighted pregnancy bumps for him to wear for the whole 24 hours

WeeBeasties · 16/12/2017 17:28

Id make him eat twice as much of all that stuff to make up for what you're not eating, to make sure you're getting your money's worth!

Eh? Confused why? Sounds like you’re punishing him for you being pregnant.

Weird. You want someone else to be inconvenienced just because you are? Whatever floats your boat....

Elmosmum · 16/12/2017 17:32

It is lighthearted! It came up as i don't think he understands the day to day practicalities of being pregnant- i.e he eats out of date stuff and says 'it'll be fine' if I eat it or cooked me a pink steak Confused

He's the most loveliest husband ever - it's not a punishment it's more of an eye opener.

I guess IABU by the responses!!

Well, you very very probably WOULD be fine if you ate it. If you never caught listeria from your food before now you probably won't catch it while you're pregnant.

I find it to be frankly a bizarre idea, and lack of blue cheese isn't even close to the most challenging thing about pregnancy, but if you really want to do it, crack on.

It's a bit weird. If he's generally supportive does he not just understand that it's a hard time for you? It doesn't sound like he's being too bad from what you've said! He's not taking you hiking up the side of a mountain and demanding you waddle quicker, I assume?

Janetjanetjanet · 16/12/2017 17:37

Did he agree to this shite?

He's on an all inclusive Confused

mustbemad17 · 16/12/2017 17:38

I love it 😂 Can you get a pregnancy bump too? Shame you can't dose him up with hormones too haha

Report
WunWun · 16/12/2017 17:39

I don't think it's necessary to make him feel what it's like or understand.

I don't think forcing him to only eat food that's in date or not undercooked etc will make him understand why you can't. Google would be a better way to understand that.

Elmosmum · 16/12/2017 17:41

No demands for hiking up hills or anything- he's actually being really good at managing my hormonal fluctuations and tiredness. I must admit I'm certainly not glowing!!

Ok it's a pants idea, and I don't want to punish him Confused

I'm so glad I was pregnant before all this stuff was deemed a 'no go' (excluding smoking and drinking obvs- gave those up without a thought)

I've heard somewhere that women are not drinking sparkling water now???

Wtaf??

My (now ex) husband couldn't even be bothered to let me sleep in the bed when I was 9 months pregnant, struggling with a nephrostomy and was apparently happy for me to sleep on the floor of our unfurnished spare room.

I would suggest balance in all things! Grin

If you’ve paid for all inclusive what’s the sense in both of you missing out if only one of you has too? Sorry but I think this is a really bizarre idea and as a pp said it sounds like you are trying to punish him for you being pregnant - even if you think it’s in a light hearted way..

This is one of the weirdest threads I’ve seen, seriously his a man with all the sympathy days in the word he is never going to understand what it feels like to be pregnant.

If you were with an arsehole I could maybe understand you demand for these sympathy days 😂 but you say he is the most lovely husband so I just don’t get it

Elmos mum i have a warped sense of humour, this appeals to me! I am all for stuff like this...have you seen the Youtube videos of the three guys doing various stages of pregnancy? Including labour 😂😂 cracks me up every time

I'd put his goodwill to better use supporting you in things you want/need during pregnancy - researching prams/slings/cots, buying or making you things you're craving, rubbing your feet, whatever.

Report
gingergenius · 16/12/2017 17:52

@Elmosmum yep. His snoring was beyond normal levels of unbearable (his current gf concurs)

I gad a nephrostomy with my first pregnancy and skep on the unfurnished floor of our spare room. When I mentioned it, it didn't seem to phase him. Neither did the fact that I was miscarrying on a subsequent pregnancy... as I told him I was bleeding and as he walked out the door he asked me to let me know how I got on!!!!
