Positive test but worrying symptoms? Is this going to be bad..

Hi all,

I am really a bit worried right now. I came off the pill back in August. I was Ttc a couple years ago so experienced a few similar things this time around eg spotting when not on period, very long, heavy and irregular periods, mood swings. Over the past 4 weeks or so, I had a very short light period, perhaps lasting around 4 days or so. I then stopped, was off for a week and then it started back again with very intense cramping. Still very light bleeding in comparison to what I’m used to. This lasted around two weeks, and then stopped again. For the last week I’ve had cramping but no bleeding. I’ve also been very tired and felt very run down.

It only occurred to me today that maybe all this isn’t usual for coming off the pill and perhaps I am pregnant. I did a test, and right away it shows a very strong positive. Fantastic! We’re over the moon, but I can’t get myself excited with all the cramping and bleeding I’ve been having, surely these arent good signs? Also considering I’ve been drinking throughout all this time.

I’m going to book a gp appointment this week. So hopefully they can tell me something more definitive, but I wouldn’t have a clue of conception date because I thought I was still having my period.

Any advice or words of wisdom please before I lose my mind?

Bump

If anyone has any past experiences of this it would be extremely helpful. Feeling such mixed emotions right now

Op I think you need to do a pregnancy test. I'd say it's unlikely you are pregnant but try and get a FRER and test with FMU. Sadly no-one can say from symptoms if you're pregnant or not as early pg is very like pre period.

CL, she’s done a pregnancy test and it came up positive.
OP, my experience of pregnancies that were ‘odd’ in the early stages is that there was usually something amiss, but nature can behave strangely and some women do experience weirdness with a happy ending. Get a referral to an EPAU or self refer if they allow that. Best thing would be to have a scan.

If you are going to self refer I’d advise waiting to Tuesday as queues on a Monday morning can be rather extreme.

Ok thanks.
This is my first pregnancy so I’ve no clue what to expect.

Oh bloody hell OP. Sorry. I blame being very tired and having a traumatic journey though snow!! READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY WOMAN!!!

Again I am very sorry ❤️

I think a little light bleeding is normal for some women.... I did have a weird experience where I had a period but tested a week later (my mum felt I was acting weird...I wasn't just mad into testing!!) and got a positive. I was sceptical as I'd had such a heavy period and it did fade out to negative. I think that was pretty unusual though.

If it was a strong positive I'd also say you are much safer than I was (they never got past light positives and 1-2 weeks on the digis). They'll pick something up on a scan at 6 weeks so you could always go private or depending where you are there are some wonderful walk in centres. Bath has one I know. They'll scan you there without needing to go through the GP.

Thanks CL. I’ve been guilty of missing something in a thread before so don’t worry about it.
I spoke to my mum on the phone and she’s recommending I be cautious. I’ll hopefully not need to wait too long for a gp appointment. My last proper period (if I don’t count the one 3 weeks ago) started middle of October. But I’ve not recognised any symptoms until really a couple weeks ago.
So I guess I’ll just need to wait and see what the doctor says and keep everything crossed.

Thanks CL. I will keep the thread updated.
Not sure what my doctors practice is. When my friend got her Bfp she had to self refer to the midwife and never even seen her gp. Things for her had went smoothly though, so I don’t know if I’d be different with the bleeding and cramps. I’m also a little concerned they won’t bother with an appointment, and just tell me to wait and see? Am I just being silly thinking that or is it a possibility they will wait to see if it’s a miscarriage and not do anything in the meantime?

Sorry, I’m just so clueless with all this.

I had Early cramping and light bleeding which I assumed was period / coming off pill symptoms.

Turns out I was well and truly pregnant and my 6 month old is sitting next to me on my sofa as I type.

Good luck x

I had bleeding at around 9 weeks and it turned out to be implantation bleeding. Apparently that's pretty common in the early days where the fertilised egg burrows into your womb. It's just a waiting game i'm afraid.

I never saw my gp either. I told the surgery id had my bfp and they referred me to a midwife. If it is a miscarriage in afraid there isn't much they can do at this early stage.

When i was pregnant i had bleeding and cramps like i was on my period. I then found out i was pregnant with twins. The doctor told me bleeding is common with some women around the time they are due to start . I bleed on and off for months.

Thanks all.
Maybe a dumb question, but if bleeding had stopped, would I still be showing such a strong positive if it was indeed a miscarriage?

Hello donny. Might be worth starting your own thread so you can get relevant advice. But it sounds like your testing too early, leave it a week and test again.

I had bleeding in early stages of two pregnancies. One went to term, one was a very early stage loss (just a few weeks in so if I hadn't tested would probably have not even noticed and assumed a slightly late period. I think be cautious but there is a definite possibility so do all the vitamin taking etc and watch and wait (easier said than done I know).

Blimey OP, they don’t come much stronger than that. No-one can tell you at this stage that your pregnancy is viable, but a v positive hpt is a good sign and cramping and bleeding can be v normal. I didn’t have bleeding in either of my successful pregnancies, but I did have terrible cramps and pains at the start, so this may just be how it goes for you. Since you don’t necessarily know how far along you are, I’d ask your GP to refer you to the EPAU for a scan. I hope it all works out for you.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the comments and advice. I took another test today and still very strong positive.

Sorry didn’t mean to post that already.

So, will get in touch with gp today and I think I’ll buy a test which shows weeks. The more I think back, I think I could be about 8 weeks. My last proper period was 15th October, and the bleeding I’ve had since couldn’t have resulted in pregnancy because we never dtd around the times, and certainly I don’t think I would be showing such strong positives.
