Kitcat159 · 05/12/2017 10:37

I'm 7/8 weeks at the moment with my first.
I am really struggling with the morning sickness.
Spent all weekend retching and feeling really nauseous.
I have a phobia of vomiting so when I do throw up i get so worked up I can't function for a while.
I'm not eating. Just nibbling on crackers or ginger biscuits.
Tried mints, mint tea, dry bread, sickness bands etc
I just don't know what to do. I'm exausted all the time because I'm so worried I'm going to vomit. I work in an office so I and sitting crunched up at a desk all day under bright lights...both of which are making me feel worse.

Tried making a doctors appointment but they are full for a few days.
I can't carry on like this for months!!

What do I do now?
sobs quietly to herself in a corner

I had hyperemesis.
I found sipping very cold sparkling water through a straw helped.
You need to get a gp appt asap though.
It is grim.

Oh I'm really really dizzy and dehydrated.
I am trying to come off my sertraline -dropped from 100 to 50mg a week and a bit ago....dont know if that is causing the dizziness or the sickness tho?

If I have another sick day, not only will I not get paid but I will probably lose my job.

The only way I'm comfortable is when I'm laying down with my teddy bear.

😢

I had HG and was still vomiting throughout my c section regardless of the anti sickness meds I had.

Go see your gp OP, don't suffer. Congratulations x

I have a real phobia of vomit. Everytime I'm sick I feel like I'm going to choke or not be able to breathe. This pregnancy is pretty bad. With my daughter I had HG and ended up on an IV drip with anti sickness meds.

Try and get an emergency appointment with your GP, coming off the sertraline that quickly will also give you side effects. I stopped mine cold turkey a few months ago and though I was going to die. Is the doctor helping you come off it? Don't do it alone it's terrible for side effects.

Kitcat159 · 05/12/2017 12:09

No he just said to come off it and to drop down to 50mg. So I did.
I have accidentally stopped taking it all together before - ran out for a week - wow that was horrible. Room spins and can't see straight.
He also said to stop taking my inhaler as it has steroids in.....didnt give me any alternative or anything just stop all together. I kinda need that to breathe. If I don't take it for 1 day I end up in hospital.

I had a scan on Friday and all is going well at the moment.
Just this damn sick feeling. Oh an know what in an and can't eat. Just been told to Google it.

Poor you OP. I am no expert as I’m on baby number one too and still suffering with nausea at 14 weeks but I found sucking fruit pastille ice lollies was the best way to ease my nausea early on. At least they get a bit of liquid and some sugar into you.

I also realised that I had to force myself to eat through the nausea as when my tummy was empty it was much worse. Eating when you feel sick is really hard, but try and get something stodgy in your tummy, be it a few biscuits / slice of toast / plain pasta - whatever you can force yourself to eat.

Hope you feel better soon and can get to the GP quickly xx

I really hope your sickness becomes a lot better really soon, or that you see a gp who can help with anti sickness mess- what you’re describing sounds quite extreme, so no wonder you feel awful.

I don’t know what sertaline is but worried by what your gp said re asthma inhaler. My midwife had concerns about my inhaler as she’d not heard of it before (only symbicort!), but just referred me for a rapid access appointment with the link consultant to check it. And it was fine. Thank goodness you haven’t decided to just stop taking it- what bad advice.
Fingers crossed you are feeling much better soon.

Anti sickness meds in pregnancy were the most life changing medicine I’ve taken! I found the summaries of research in the book Expecting Better by Emily Oster were really helpful and reassuring.

Sorry you feel so awful.you could make an urgent appointment with the GP for anti sickness mediation. I would also suggest contacting your midwife urgently - I don't think the GP has given you good advise about just stopping your sertraline, or indeed cutting down like that. You need to see an Obstetric Consultant or your local perinatal team to put a plan in place for your medication.

Hi OP, sorry you're going through this horrible time. You should be able to get an urgent appointment with yoir GP for some anti-sickness meds - don't let them fob you off with a 'morning sickness is normal' if they try that! The pregnancy sickness support website is a lifeline and they also have a helpline you can call and they can give you very good advice. It really is awful you have all my sympathies. Also work are not allowed to take absence for pregnancy related sickness into account for dismisal or performance management reasons. If you tell them you are pregnant you will be legally protected against this. Sending you a hug.

They can’t sack you for pregnancy related sickness so tell work!
I’ve just come to the end (I hope!) of my sickness in pregnancy number 2, I’m 13 weeks now. I got signed off work and spent 6 weeks in bed essentially. Resting helps. Have lived off toast and Coke/lemonade mostly. Water was foul, couldn’t manage it.
You have my sympathy, it’s awful!

Oh op. I feel for you.
I had hg with both my girls. It only stopped when they were in my arms.l despite the meds from docs
Fizzy water with ice & lemon helped on the days that weren't awful. Sucking on ice cubes helped on the really crappy days.
Get an appointment as soon as you can. The last thing you need is to become dehydrated.

I have a phobia of vomiting too. So when I found out I was pregnant I armed myself with all I could!
Have you tried the sea sickness bands? Try not to get an empty stomach just nibble and I used to have a packet of biscuits by my bed. I’m ashamed to say I took phernergan (anti sickness) during my pregnancy that I bought from chemist direct.

8 weeks was my lowest point, OP. After that I started to feel a bit more human and not gag every two minutes.

My tricks were seriously strong salt and vinegar crisps - the kind that bring you out in a sweat - and Diet Coke, as cold as can be.

That is terrible advice! Can you see another GP? That is very wrong, you need to keep taking your inhaler throughout your pregnancy www.asthma.org.uk/advice/manage-your-asthma/pregnancy/

As for the sickness, get some meds, they are complete game-changers

Thanks for the advice everyone!
I'm going to the doctors again this afternoon to see if there is anything they can give me as I'm nauseous literally all day and night. It's effecting my work as I have had to take today off sick (unpaid) because I'm so dizzy and retching.
The doctor I saw last time is the best one there. All the others just say "what do you want me to do to help you?". When I say I don't know exactly, they say that they can't help me then. 😟

Hopefully the other doctor will help me get this under control and give me a different inhaler or something.
Fingers crossed!

Mango seems to be a good food to keep down if you're feeling sick. A lot of us on the Hyperemesis thread have found it's something that works. It also helps gets some sort of fluids in you.
Hope your GP sorts it for you

user1485778793 Because it wasn’t prescribed, I bought it online. I asked for tablets from my GP and she practically told me off and said if I wasn’t vomiting all day every day it would be selfish of me to take them. So I partly put baby at risk I guess as I didn’t get medical advice about taking them.

Pregnancy Sickness Support very useful and informative website here.

You have my every sympathy! I had hyperemisis in both my pregnancies, and took every drug going. I was hospitalised for dehydration several times in each pg too, My dc are both fine.

Do your work know that you are pg?
If not, tell them. Ask them to be discreet. This is in your favour, because sick leave taken for pregnancy related conditions may be recorded, but can not be used against you for any disciplinary purposes*. But your employer needs to know! They also need to do a Pregnancy risk assessment on you.

At my lowest, I could just about tolerate melting ice cubes in my mouth.

*i had 8 weeks off in both my pg. no issue with work.

So update.....
I saw a different doctor and he said that there is no problem with me taking my inhaler even though it's steroids. Hurrah!
He gave me cyclizine hydrochloride tablets for the nausea but warned me against taking them as they are "unlicensed so not tested" and if I decide to tale them it would me on my conscious. Put me off somewhat!
Was nearly admitted to hospital to be put on a drip due to dehydration

Dreading work on Monday 🙁
My manager and HR lady know I'm pregnant but nobody else does.
I'm so worried about throwing up at work...partly because I have a full on sob everytime because of the phobia, partly because people will hear and start asking questions/gossiping

I would take some time off work... seriously!

Pregnancy is tiring, tiredness can make nausea worse. Anxiety is tiring too.

Give the tablets a go, you may not need them for long. I needed mine for a solid week then weaned them down so now I take 1 a day at the most Smile

Sod work and look after yourself and baby
