Hi ladies,

Was just looking for some advice. In 37 weeks today pregnant with my second baby.
With my first baby, my lfts were in the 60’s but bile acids were ‘normal’ they only found out my liver levels were high at 39 weeks because I was having headaches, so they induced me at term. They never figured out the cause and the levels went back to normal after delivery.

This time round they’ve been doing lfts every month and all have been fine until 35 weeks, where things started jumping up. Last Monday they were at 36, then in a few days went up to 50, back down to 35 and today were at 48. Bile acids went from 7, to 9.5 in just a few days. I feel so sick and itchy, with headaches and nausea. Now that I’m 37 weeks I thought they’d induce me, but seems like different consultants have different opinions of what levels are high. Should I continue to push for more tests ?

The doctor said he is quite sure it’s OC but won’t be able to diagnose it without high bile acids, and even if he does diagnose it, he won’t induce until 39 weeks ! Doesent sound right to me.

Hi OP.

I had OC while pregnant with my baby girl and gave birth in July via section at 36 weeks.
37 weeks is the best time to get baby out with you having OC, as there's more risk of a stillborn the longer they let you go. That's going off everything I've read and researched anyway

They waited until 39 weeks to induce me last year. I questioned it after doing some reading and both consultants I saw said they now leave it longer becasue there is no clinical indication to induce earlier unless the symptoms are unbearable apparently my ruined hands from itching was a bearable sympton.

Thanks all! How frustrating is it when the consultants keep having differing opinions and changing their minds. I just want baby to be healthy !

I have read that recent studies don't support an increased risk of stillbirth though (older studies did)

Both my consultants actually said that the risk of stillbirth doesn't have the greatest evidence base and is largely theoretical and early induction is a lot about mother discomfort than the risk of still birth. At the time I thought they were just placating me but I was in no state to be reading studies and worrying myself further.

Hey OP!

I was diagnosed with OC at 29 weeks with ALT levels of 102 and Bile Acids at 33. I have been given Urso and piriton to take and last week when I went for my weekly appointment my ALT had gone down to 88 but BA went up to 44 so they wanted to see me again yesterday. My ALT has now gone up to 92 and my BA are now 98!!! They are freaking out a little but I am needing to go back tomorrow now as they don't want to leave me another 48 hours with my bile acids that high so will need to go back for more bloods and CTG. They have said that there is possibly another medicine I can take that is an antibiotic to bring the bile acids down but I'm unsure of what happens if my BA keep rising as far as I am aware, it's the bile acids they really worry about?Your BA still seem on the lower side so that may be why they aren't inducing you at the moment? Things can change so quickly though so they should be monitoring it for you weekly.

This is also my 2nd pregnancy with OC however my 1st pregnancy with it went unmonitored until 38 weeks when I went into hospital with reduced fetal movements and then I was induced the next day.
