On the News this morning it has been revealed that a runny yolk is safe for pregnant women to eat now! Hallelujah!

And it's been that way for YEARS. Literally years. Since about 1998 in fact. It just takes public health a fuck of a long time to update their advice.

Yeah I really didn't get how this was 'news' this morning- I got my BFP in January and was told straight away that lion branded eggs were safe to have runny so I've been doing that the whole way through! And the NHS website already says Lion eggs are safe???? Wonder what made it news today?!

Just hoping the NHS staff training catches up - at my booking appt in June the MW said that runny eggs were a total no-no in pregnancy Angry

They still are if they're not Lion branded free
range eggs @TonicAndTonic, as it's only these eggs that have been guaranteed to have been vaccinated against salmonella. But I completely get what you mean (and I say that as an NHS employee who delivers training as part of their role!) The midwife who ran the NHS breastfeeding workshop I went to said we could have one or two alcoholic drinks whilst breastfeeding but it was important to express and bin the next feed ('pump and dump') as that would get rid of the alcohol. Then another midwife who ran the NHS antenatal class I went to less than a week later said that there's no evidence for expressing and binning the next feed and the amount of alcohol actually present in the milk would be minute, so better to just limit yourself to one drink but not to get too obsessed with timing and expressing afterwards?!? Not helpful when you're a first time parent trying to make informed decisions! 🙈

Well, I’m not going to get too hung up on the inside outs of it all. But think I’m I have a bacon and a runny egg sandwich at the weekend.

🙈 27weeks pregnant and had runny eggs in my pregnancy... whoops never even knew!

Just wanted to be clear - they just have to be lion stamped, they don't have to be free range. Obviously I hope most people buy free range anyway, but if you don't, as long as they're lion stamped that's fine. Non free range chickens are also vaccinated (well they are if their eggs are stamped).

I work in a place that does lots of work with the food standards agency and so I've eaten lion stamped runny eggs throughout both my pregnancies but very glad I have something to push in MILs face when she's bugging me about it. The thing I find annoying is how few restaurants will admit to using lion stamped eggs - though i'm sure most must be! - so there are many yummy restaurant dishes I've missed out on over the past few years and will continue to do so I guess :-(

I asked my midwife about this a couple of weeks because of conflicting advice and all I wanted was egg and soldiers

She said that you're allowed to eat the runny yolk, as long as you make sure the egg whites are cooked properly and not snotty, because that's where the potential danger lies? I've been so confused.

Mine told me it was fine but they need to have the lion stamp on them

I never stopped having them in either pregnancy. Poached egg on toast is one of my all time favs.

Not in a polite mood today so I'm going to say I'm firmly in camp bollocks to the egg police.

Lion stamped eggs are fine, runny, with a little salt and gorgeous thick slices of bread smeared in butter.

I've also eaten prawns, salami, caviar and drunk a glass of champagne here and there.

Pregnancy is hard enough as it is, so my philosophy is be sensible about where your food comes from, then bloody enjoy it!

Pretty sure prawns have always been fine in pregnancy according to NHS website @SundayLunchHappy but I'm a bit like you with other things. It's more other people's reactions that puts me off- I had one glass of prosecco (a small one at that!) at my friend's hen do a few weeks ago when I was 35 weeks pregnant and got some very funny looks whilst doing so. It's literally one of three drinks I've had through the whole pregnancy (and the other two were spritzers that were so dilute they might as well have been non-alcoholic) so I really felt I deserved my one long-savoured glass!!!!

I'm with you mummabubs people are so judgemental it's ridiculous. My favourite judgey pants type is the one who will happily eat a load of processed crap and soft sugar loaded drinks and then raise an eyebrow when I choose a soft cheese salad and a fresh Buck's Fizz. I'm not a serial bruncher I promise....

The only reason I didn't eat runny eggs in 1st trimester was because I couldn't keep any food down at all. And then when I could it was the first thing I wanted.. along with my nan's chips. You have no idea how excited I was for those. But I still get told not to eat them by people I don't know. Glad it's finally been in the news.

I'm happy this is finally being publicised. Thankfully I've not stopped eating runny eggs in any of my pregnancies becuse I knew it was safe and that the NHS just hadn't caught up. Good though that others will feel comfortable eating them now.

I’ve been preaching this for years! Other ones that annoy me; pregnant women can’t get out of breath when exercising, pregnant women can’t have soft cheese (goats cheese, or even cheesecake).

The only thing I took any notice of in the foods not to eat when preggo was the liver/vit A bit. I ate rare steak, blue cheese, runny eggs, everything... ds is here 2 years on, loud, messy, with no food intolerances or skin conditions at all.

TheCatsMother99 · 11/10/2017 14:30

I've eaten them all the way through as if heard they were fine a while ago but I'm glad the news is finally spreading so I don't have to keep justifying myself.

orange same here, I’ve avoided liver, as actual science backs up why I can’t have it (I do miss pate sobs!).

About time! I've been eating runny eggs throughout pregnancy, who wants to eat a hard-boiled poached egg 😷

My friend who runs a B&B in Fr. was told by an instructor (while on an elf and safety course) that the salmonella was only on the OUTSIDE of the eggs Shock

So the whole thing was a total load of bollox dreamed up by a power hungry dope of an MP and the press who love a scandal.

Apparently it only ever gets INSIDE the eggs in a one in 4 million (or so) case.
