Hiding Pregnancy Excuses

Hi, I'm 5 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I have a family party tomorrow and have claimed I won't be drinking as I'm on antibiotics.
I've got another occasion at the end of October and a different one the first week of November. Things are going to get busier now it's the run up to christmas.
All occasions are with similar people and people will already be confused about tomorrow never mind the other 2... any help with excuses I can use for not drinking?!
Other than antibiotics, what excuses did you use before you'd announced you're pregnancy??
TIA Smile

They'll all already know because of the antibiotics. It's the absolute cliché that everyone knows means pregnancy.
Otherwise the best approach is to pretend to drink. Pretend sips, lose your drink, swap it with yours partners, get plain coke and pretend there's vodka in it etc.

Personally I think excuses draw more attention. I personally found taking a glass and then not really drinking. Ordered soft drinks from bar etc. Most people don’t notice what your drinking.

With DS2 I went to a wedding. Another friend made a big thing about being on antibiotics and so couldn’t drink. Of course as soon as she was out of earshot Everyone was saying, “she’s pregnant”. No one noticed me nursing the same glass of wine. Everyone was really shocked when I announced I was pregnant 6 weeks later. She got “oh we knew”.

I was just designated driver for a few weeks! Agree though that everyone sees through the antibiotics excuse.

Take a drink, pretend to sip it, swap it with your partners empty glass etc

Order soft drinks at the bar pretends it’s vodka, gin etc

Drive so you can’t drink

The antibiotics line is rubbish and has everyone thinking pregnancy

Yeah antibiotics blatantly says ‘I’m pregnant’ there’s only one or two types that you can’t drink on.

Better to say you had a big night the night before and can’t face it again!

I was stuck on whether to pretend to drink or not at this occasion but because it's my parents party there will be lots of people catching up and buying drinks so I didn't want the pressure.. plus I'm a lightweight so everyone would know I'm not drinking them!

I'll definitely try the holding a drink all night at the second occasion and see how it goes for the 3rd.

Thank you

Lots of people to Stoptober and raise some money for charity by stopping drinking for a month. If anyone questions you too much as for a donation.

You might as well wear a huge neon flashing sign saying saying pregnant with the ab excuse.

There are only a couple you can't drink with anyway - metronidazole- which is I believe usually prescribed for bacterial vaginiosis...

Designated driver or hanging from the night before are more plausible.

I mostly said I was a bit rough from the night before / saving myself for a night out the next night, was giving up alcohol for Lent (sober for October could be an alternative) or just ordered something like soda water and pretended it was a gin and tonic.

Sharl2017 · 06/10/2017 14:11

Some anti biotics i had for a waterinfection previously were not to be taken with alcohol which is why I've gone down this route..

My SIL announced she wouldn't be drinking as she's doing stoptober and my first thought was well you're pregnant!! Haha
I think any time someone doesn't drink it'll be the first assumption

Stoptober! Then you can ask them for donations.
Also feeling rough from the night before covers you for morning sickness

An old friend thought it would be hilarious to tell everyone very solemnly that she was admitting she was an alcoholic and was going teetotal. Unfortunately after announcing her pregnancy she had to go round reassuring everyone who hadn't immediately twigged she'd been joking Confused

I’m doing this - Go Sober for October - to maids money for Macmillan. Every-time someone offers to buy me a drink I ask them to donate the £3 to my fundraising page.

Perfect excuse!

Say your doing sober for October 🙌🏼 Can raise a little money at the same time. I wouldn't say everyone would guess your pregnant because your on antibiotics, it's that time of year people get sick I would say.

Why does everyone care or make a big deal out of it!!?? Just say you don't want to why loads of excuses.
No one has ever really given a toss if I'm drinking whisky or cokes or whatever when I'm out and about. The more you panic and draw attention to the fact your not drinking the more people will wonder why your making a big deal.
Failing that just drive if you do drive. Don't buy drinks just to waste or chuck away what a waste of money Hmm

It's not possible to hide usually. Your objective is to warn anyone off asking till you're ready to tell. It's rarely a 'surprise' when people announce a pregnancy but that's fine. It's just that it's not up for discussion or as news till you choose to tell them. So just say 'I'm on antibiotics' and to anyone who resell then says 'you're not pregnant are you' you say 'if there's news to tell you you'll be told' with a warning look.

I found saying I wasn't drinking drew more attention. When I was first pregnant with my second, I had a hen night where I wandered round with a glass of prosecco/tonic water with a slice of lemon and claimed it was a g&t. It was actually much easier than all the stories I used the first time round (and less people guessed!)

KarateKitten · 06/10/2017 15:33

Nobody guessed my 3rd or 4th. Despite looking like death warmed up. My mum was worried I was under too much strain with #1 and #2 making me ill (she confided to my sister). But nobody thought we'd be mad enough to go again so soon either time.

hanna it depends on how you was before you was pregnant. At these particular occasions it would be out of character for me to not be drinking. It's not making it a big deal, it's trying to have a cover story. Hmm

Clearly the one I've ran with for tomorrow was a bad obvious call but I've now got better ideas for the other occassions.

You won't need another cover story - someone will be drunk enough to ask you outright tomorrow...

I hosted a party a few weeks ago and was just very sneaky with my drinks. No one noticed. I was made to have one mojito and pretended to sip through a straw. Poured it out when no one was looking. Drank tonic water without the gin. It's easily done. You can always say you're not drinking much because you've got a headache and the wine is making it worse. The antibiotics fib never works. You can drink alcohol with most antibiotics anyway.

I used to drink lemonade and make out it was vodka and lemonade, or coke with vodka when really it was a coke x

Sharl2017 · 06/10/2017 16:30

Thank you rox I think that's what I'll do for the other ones. The appetizer in wine glass was a good idea too.
