Canesten Pessary whilst pregnant??

I have developed thrush over the past couple of days I have just been using the cream (I assumed would be safe to use) but it's getting worse I need to Use the pessary to clear it up am I ok to use it as I have got one at home already or do I need to Book a doctors appointment to get a prescription for something else?? Thanks

From memory you can use the pessary but not the tablets. I had a terrible experience with the pessary though. Swab said candida but the pessary made it much, much worse.

I used the pessary, didn't find it helped though tbh. This sounds gross but I actually used a syringe to squirt plain yoghurt into my vagina instead😬 and that was far more beneficial.

I did the same as calimommy. The pessary wasn't working but the yoghurt did. Felt so soothing too and gave my mum a great big told you so since she'd been harping on about yoghurt since I first mentioned thrush.

You can use the pessary but insert with a finger not the applicator.
Sometimes in pregnancy a 6 day course is required.
A pharmacist won't sell over the counter if they know you are pregnant so you will need a gp appt (or get DH to buy it for you)

I used the Pessary when pregnant - prescribed by GP and midwife. Pharmacy won't sell it to you without a prescription when pregnant.

Thanks everyone will use the pessary today if that doesn't work will try the natural yoghurt!

Yes that's right about the prescription, I'd forgotten that. I was most aggrieved when it made things worse.

Oh god, I remember having to leave work with thrush as I felt I was sitting on a cactus & when I got to the pharmacy they refused to sell me anything! They sent me to the doctors (luckily just round the corner) for a prescription before they give me anything at all. It was awful! Not helped by the receptionist in the GPs asking me 'and why do you think you have thrush?' While an older gentleman stood behind me. I wish I'd had the nerves to yell 'my fanny is itchy!' but mumbled something about itching instead. Mortifying.

I was pregnant, by the way. Hence the pharmacy not giving me anything.

My obstetrician said pessary is fine - but as pp said, insert with your finger.
I was able to hide my bump in the chemist so didn't have to have a conversation with them about it.

In the same chemist a different time though a boy working behind the counter who looked about 16 asked me why I was buying canesten. Is there a use for it I'm unaware of - is it a party drug when cut with something else??
I told him it was for thrush. Maybe he was just curious!

As an aside I have started eating bio live natural yoghurt every day and that has helped calmed things down

Try to limit sugar in your diet too. I had it really bad in one pregnancy and used the pessary minus the applicator and soothed it with live yoghurt.

So you don't push it in too far in case it hits the cervix

Gentler and you have control over where it goes.

There is no evidence on cutting down sugar.

I'm not sure about then research on sugar but I found when I reduced obvious sugars (sweets cakes etc) as opposed to fruits etc that I had far fewer incidences. Also, CANNOT recommend enough: PROBIOTICS.

I was prescribed a pessary and cream with thrush when I was about 11 weeks. I was told to take care with the applicator (it can damage the cervix if pushed too high). All was fine :) I find the pessaries much better than cream on its own. Get yourself a GP appointment or someone else to buy it for you.

With DD I suffered thrush til she was born so was taking canesten all the time ... yes no applicator as it's rougher so just in case use finger
See your doctor though as I had a less concentrated version of the cream I recall (it was 9 years ago nearly!)

How often can you use the canesten pessary when pregnant. I used the pessary twice spaced out over a 5day period. 5 days later I'm feeling itching again. Also using the creaming but itching is more inside. Thinking if I could get another pessary
