How early do you reliably see a hb on ultrasound

Hello
After a hidious journey of ttc I find myself pregnant. I've had a previous mc at 6 weeks. I've now had some bleeding and am being sent for a scan but at only 6 weeks again I fear it'll be too early to see a hb and we will be left in limbo.
Not feeling at all optimistic as all symptoms have gone.

I had a scan at 5.5 weeks - just an empty sac visible. I had another scan 10 days later and saw a heartbeat. Could you postpone the scan until 7 weeks as it might be more reliable then?

TheLongRains · 27/06/2017 13:32

I'm so sorry for the hard times you've been going through :( I can't answer your question I'm afraid, but am in a very similar situation so am hoping someone with more knowledge comes along with the answer. All the best at your scan. I hope it's good news for you.

GraceGrape · 27/06/2017 13:34

Sorry, just saw about the bleeding. I understand about the limbo, I had the same, but I would say 6 weeks could still be inconclusive.

beanhunter · 27/06/2017 13:34

@grace I'm bleeding with pain so they want to rule out an ectopic so can't delay x

First of all sorry for the situation you have found yourself in. I've been there too, it's hard Flowers

If your dates are 100% accurate then from 6 wks is when you'd expect to see a heart beat. When I've had early bleeds, they've asked me to come back for another scan in two weeks (wk 8) just to double check in case the dates are incorrect. If there's no heart beat at this point then it will be confirmed as a miscarriage. Have they asked you come back for a repeat scan?

StorminaBcup · 27/06/2017 13:38

Sorry just seen it's your first scan. They may ask to come back if it isn't ectopic and not confirmed mc at today's scan.

I saw a HB at exactly 6 weeks, it was just like a grain of rice with a little pulsing section. Good luck xx

AnxietyForever · 27/06/2017 14:51

I had a early scan last week, I was 6wks 1 day and saw a perfect heartbeat. Good luck

LisaSimpsonsbff · 27/06/2017 14:59

How certain are you about your dates? I had a scan at 6+3 (after two previous MCs) - they told me that it certainly wasn't a healthy embryo at 6+3, but then tried to convince me my dates could just be wrong and I was perhaps only five weeks. As I was 100% on them (had tested early and so knew I couldn't be a week and a half out) that was a definitive answer for me, which was horrible, but not as bad as not knowing. They did then do blood tests (which in my case showed that my hormones were dropping) - so there are also other ways of seeing how things are going (right now, of course).

Flowers for you - I know how awful it is to be where you are, and I hope you get good news

gingerbreadmam · 27/06/2017 15:17

my hospital wont see you until 8 weeks as i think things are more certain then.

Tbh i think it will be difficult if there isn't a hb as it doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem just thay dates could be slightly out.

beanhunter · 27/06/2017 15:17

Very sure. We were working up to ivf so had a scan showing I had already ovulated by 31.5. So at a minimum should be 6 weeks today/yesterday.

When is the scan? In the next couple of days? I really hope that you get good news; my understanding is if you're sure of your dates the chances of it being inconclusive are much lower but if you do end up in that position (and again I hope you don't) then do ask what else (ie. blood tests) they can do to assess things.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2017 15:37

6 weeks.

gingerbreadmam · 27/06/2017 15:37

hope you get good news.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 27/06/2017 15:38

I had very heavy bleeding with my now 10 mo and saw a heartbeat at 4w 5d but equally my best friend had a very heavy bleed and pain and there was no visible heartbeat at 7w 2d. They thought it was game over but when she went back a week later there was a heart beat her her little boy is now 6mo. I think it's far from an exact science.

Sweetyboo · 27/06/2017 16:05

Hi i went for my scan at 5w there was a sack thats it but then i went back at 6w & there was a hb so i will say 6W. One day b4 my 12w scan i had a heavy bleed too but all was well on the scan. Im 13+ and i still have brown discharge\bleed but when go to midwife baby hb is strong & fine. Best of luck

beanhunter · 27/06/2017 16:08

Am done. Had transabdominal scan. Measuring 6 weeks with a heart beat. No cause of bleeding seen.
