Sizing of baby clothes?

Hi ladies

I just wanted some advice on baby clothes. Does anyone have recommendations on which shops fit well to size for baby clothes? I know you are best to go by weight etc but I have also been told that certain shops come up small/big/rubbish after a couple of washes.

Any recommendations please?

You'll find advice hugely varies on this, for example I always find m&s came up small but my dsis always thought it came up big! With DC3 on the way I've personally found that the best quality were next, Debenhams & m&s in terms of washwear etc. Next tend to be slightly more generous in sizing IMO although my babies floated around 98th centile so I preferred that 😊

It depends on each baby, some are long and thin some short and wider.

Next is trim fit I think so suits a long baby
Mother care is generous
Tesco big
Asda and Sainsbury's are average

My tips -second hand, baby will grow soooooo quick that they don't get the ware. Try eBay or nearly new sales.

Don't buy much (if you can resist) you'll get presents/ people pass over outgrown clothes. Wait until you know what shape child you have and the style of clothes you like, i.e. I like to dress ds in t-shirt and legging as these suit him better.

Someone once told me baby clothes are too big, too big, fit, outgrown. I particularly think this about babygrows as you can't roll back the arms/legs, ds currently in baggie ones as the size below is too small now.

To tag along on this - are there any shops that have a generous fit around the bum? I'm planning on trying cloth nappies from birth and I've heard that can make it harder to get clothes to fit as the nappies are too bulky.

Tesco trousers are tight
M&S wash the best

My ds is on the 95th centile for height but 50th for weight. I find m and s and next the best. H&m are smaller but wash really well and have some really nice things in. Vert Baudet clothes are tiny! But they do have some nice things and good sales so I buy the next size up.

ASDA sleep suits good size and washed well, but clothes shrunk
Tesco snug fit but not much give
Morrisons generous
marks&Spencer wash well and keep well accurate sizes.
Boots good sizes.

frugi is cut for cloth nappies

Blade and rose do great funky leggings that fit well

Leggings are good generally (I look in the girl section even though I have a son)

Next often do trousers that have good fabric inside and therefore look good rolled up, so you can size up for bum without horrible turn ups

Ooh and little lamb vest extenders are a must have

We found Tesco a smaller/slimmer fit, useful if your baby is between sizes (when ours outgrew newborn size, the next size up in Mothercare and Next was far too big at first). We found Mothercare sleepsuits roomy around the middle.

I think Asda and Tesco are small, Sainsbury's and Morrisons are better cut and quality.

It also depends on relative body and leg length. DS was fairly skinny with a long body with short legs - Next were good and sainsburies rubbish. We have sainsburies the shirts he grew out of by length before he grew into them width wise.

Different types of clothes are also more forgiving than others. Dungarees and dresses are great because they don't fall down if they are too big and they generally last well. T shirt type tops are less good because they always seem to shrink and go shorter and wider. Babygros are very forgiving until they start standing when they start tripping over if they are too long, and of course you can't roll them up.

I loved Next and M&S newborn clothes. They washed better and kept shape, plus they didn't feel rough/coarse after countless washes. Sainsbury's were good but not quite as thick (DS was born in Sept so a lot of his early clothes were winter focused) and I hated Tesco/ASDA as they were very thin and washed terribly. But we did ALOT of washing with a posset-y baby

The stuff from next shrinks if you put it in the tumble dryer. But for basics such as vests and babygrows I really do like next. I just have to make sure I buy the next size up

M&S is very good quality, next is good design, h&m runs tiny.

I've found that the next babygrows wash/dry wonderfully, but I've got a long baby who was big born, and then dropped to 9th centile at 7 weeks. Tesco shrank (lengthwise) and sainsburys I didn't think to be good quality. H&m are small. M&S long and roomy, wash/dry lovely. We love frugi although they are MASSIVE sizing. 😊

However, I would like to add baby clothing tip for new parents especially when shopping online.
As a new parent, I use to buy wrong size clothing that did not fit perfect to my baby boy. Even though I used to check the size labels they mentioned like 0-3 months, 3-6 months etc.
But I was wrong, So my brother sent me this Baby Clothes small post.

After this, I never checked the labels but rather size chart which people ignore. It is a very important tool to use.
I hope people will benefit from it.

However, when going to market places, I take my son along with me and measure it by physically checking side by side (the baby and the dress).
