Hospital bag, done a death but do I have everything?

I packed my hospital bag tonight, at 33w2d, as I'm currently on annual leave before mat leave and want to relax as much as possible during mat leave (I teach, it's xurrently the Easter holiday's and definitely not a relaxing time!).

I have one blue holdall, slightly bigger than a gym holdall, and I am planning an elcs which should be arranged one week tomorrow. I'm UK based, hence taking everything bar the kitchen sink with me.

For the baby I have:

  • 20 nappies
  • bundle of nappy sacks
  • packet of wipes
  • packet of cotton pads
  • two newborn vests
  • two newborn sleepsuits
  • two 0-3 vests
  • two 0-3 sleepsuits
  • blanket
  • muslins and bibs
  • going home outfit (sleepsuit, vest, cardigan, hat)

For me I have -
  • one nighty for after csection while I still have the catheter
  • two pajama sets, loose and baggy black bottoms and comfy top
  • one going home outfit of leggings and long top
  • four comfort bras
  • one packet of big knickers
  • two packs of super ultra pads with wings, 20 in total
  • socks
  • toilet bag with travel shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, face wash, moisturiser, deodrant toothpaste and toothbrush
  • bobbles, kirbies, brush and dry shampoo
  • plastic bags for dirty clothes

I still need -
  • towel
  • nipple cream
  • breast pads
  • flip flops for the shower and to wear on the ward
  • big brother present

To go in on the day -
  • phone, kindle and charger
  • purse
  • makeup (small makeup bag with powder, lipbalm and mascara)
  • mat notes
  • snacks and drinks

It seems like a lot but it fits in this bag no bother, which makes me wonder if I'm missing anything? I think with my first I had a small, cabin sized, suitcase and a holdall but I really can't remember.

Have I missed anything? Added anything that seems daft?

Someone suggested to me to get some aloe vera gel for afterwards...

Soz obviously didn't read the bit of your post where you said elc... I imagine your lady garden will be alright without the aloe vera Grin

More pants, more pads and potentially more pj bottoms. The details are hazy (EMCS after a protracted labour) but I went through and ungodly amount of 'bottoms' in the 24 hours pp.

Good luck!

Im 35 weeks with my first Pregnancy and still havent finished packing yet Blush I would suggest maybe some lip balm as hospitals tend to be quite dry and hot?

I posted about whether I should take a towel and someone said that at her hospital they suggest taking one for baby too.

Straws - you will get thirsty and if you are on the bed straws are good.

Also for after birth when you are home get some lavender oil and tea tree oil to put in the bath for healing wounds! A tip the midwife gave me and I healed within a week

Plus if u wanted to look at your pregnancy notes or compare them with siblings notes then take a copy of your pregnancy notes before you go hospital because they will take them off you - which you prob know anyways so sorry if I am telling you things you know

Hats and mittens for the baby - the ones for indoor use

Car seat which you know anyway

Blanket

The pampers mats are good to take in car just in case there is an accident or you want to replace the one on the bed just in case.

Massage oils for your other half to give you massages whilst in labour

Camera

Phone charger

Change for parking /vending machines

Dressing gown

I couldn't wear pjs after my c-section so maybe take more nighties in case your tummy is too tender.

Also inestigate c-section pants. I wish someone had told me about them. Maybe my scar wouldn't be so baggy now!

I might take another pack of pants and pajama bottoms but I don't remember being too leaky with DS. I stayed in the hospital gown until my catheter came out then my own clothes, this time I want to swap in to my own nightie in recovery and then pajamas once I'm up and mobile.

All my clothing comes above my c-section scar just now (emcs with DS), and are very loose so they should be fine in hospital.

I can't use essential oils in a bath after the birth as I don't fancy having them on my wound and I don't think I'd be able to get in and out a bath if I tried.

I have 1 baby hat for the hospital and one for going home, although I can't remember DS wearing a hat in the hospital. All the sleepsuits have built in scratch mitts, so much easier than those ones that get lost every 2 minutes.

Lip balm is in the makeup bag, I qear it religiously every day.

A towel for the baby is a good shout.

Thank you everyone!

More maternity pads
More pants
More baby clothes (you could go through 2 sets in as many hours)

Lipsalve
Shower gel on a hook
Sports top water bottle so you can drink lying down.,

Ear plugs, an eye mask and - what was best of all for me - an Evian spray.

YY to straws and a water bottle with a sports top. Life savers!

Pepper maternity pads, not "normal" ultra pads. Huge, thick pillow-like maternity pads!

I've been using the Natracare ones, got through loads of them. Vaginal birth though, don't know if it's different with a c section?

NaturWilde · 04/04/2017 05:52

I've heard from friends who had c-sections. You can bleed the same.

Definitely more baby clothes. We took a baby blanket from home, so it smelled of us and our house. Very doubtful you will need the breast pads as your milk won't come in straight away.

Take flip flops for the shower

Sports water bottle as drinking lots helps after cs.
More than 2 babygros as you'll be in 2 nights typically and they might get messed up in 48 hours.

I don't think you'll need a baby towel as you won't be bathing them in hospital.
Also unlikely you'll be having a bath either for a few weeks as advice is to keep scar as dry as possible. I think it depends on the stiches but I've had 2 CS and it's definitely no baths with disolvables

If you can get cheap plastic pool shoes (£4 on Amazon) then they are slightly better than flip flops as you can wear them over socks.

I've four sets of baby clothes, plus a fifth to come home in. It was estimated that baby weighed 4lbs at 30 weeks so I've taken two newborn (up to 10lbs) and two 0-3 (up to 14lbs).

Our hospital makes you take your own towels for showers and I definitely did have a shower after my emcs. I never washed DS though so maybe only a towel for me.

I'll get another pack of pants and a pack or two of maternity pads. I'm not a heavy bleeder at the best of times, possibly a day and a half/two day light period then a day or two of spotting. I can't remember how it was with DS but I never leaked through anything, although anything is possible this time.
