Brother in law smoking infront of me

My brother in law just lit up in the car when i was sitting behind him. He had the window obviously and it was only one. I've never been around people that smoke and obviously i've never smoked so i'm panicking because i know smoke is bad when pregnant but i've never had to think about it before so i dont know much about it. Im 35 weeks, should i start stressing over one cigarette?? I know this is probably the most stupid question ever to be asked on mumsnet but i really dont know enough about how much smoke is too much because ive never had to worry about it. Sorry if this is just me being silly x

Don't stress over one cigarette, it's the cumulative effect that matters most, baby will be fine. He was bloody rude to smoke with you in the car though!

He was very rude to smoke in the car. On the other hand, sitting in the back of a car you're inhaling all sorts of nasties from the exhaust.

Neither a bit of cigarette smoke nor the exhaust fumes from that trip are going to damage your baby though.

As an aside, I was pregnant pre-smoking ban so inhaled an awful lot of secondhand smoke at work (in a bar). As did countless other women in similar jobs. Clearly this wasn't ideal but equally I'm not convinced our unborn babies suffered hugely as a result.

You're not being stupid btw - just a little overcautious :)

No need to worry but he is rude - I smoke and would never light up in a car with other people in it (or even on my own in my car!)

Thank you everyone. I thought as it was his car and my sister is also pregnant and had no problem with it, i was rude to say anything but looking at it maybe he should have waited

I've had to be really strict with my smoker friends on it....not particularly because of how bad it is but because the smell makes me physically sick (a very annoying super sensitive pregnancy nose!). 39 weeks now and so looking forward to getting a normal sense of smell back (I hope!).

Do speak up next time, you can always use my excuse 😊

Isn't it now actually illegal to smoke in the with children as passengers? You should tell your dsis before her baby is born.

Your sister is a fool if she's regularly being exposed to smoke while pregnant. I wouldn't panic for you though. If he can't be bothered to modify his behaviour while she's pregnant, I wonder whether he will after the baby.
