Scans at Kings College Hospital

Hello everyone, I have my 12 week scan this coming Friday at the fetal centre at Kings. I had read a few other threads about some places not doing pictures of the scans/you had to pay. I wondered if anyone could let me know how they do it at Kings? I'm happy to pay of course, and I know the whole purpose of the scan isn't getting a picture, we haven't told anyone yet and (all being well) I want to put a scan pic in my mums Mother's Day card when I see her on Sunday. DP will take his camera if there's no print out available.
Thanks in advance!

They don't do prints at all at kings- you'll need to photograph the picture on the monitor yourself (was good quality!).

Thank you so much beanpole! My DPs brother got a scan there a year and a half ago so I wasn't sure if they'd stopped doing it. The camera will be taken Smile

My picture is so amazingly clear from Kings and once the important stuff was out of the way they got a good sight of the baby for us to take a picture. I'm really impresses with Kings, they have been brilliant so far! Hope it goes well.

PS what a great idea for your mum!

Thanks Hollyhop! I've just read online that you don't need a full bladder for the scan, is that right? I'm glad you're enjoying your treatment there. I'm really hoping to have a waterbirth there but I know it's a long way off yet!
Also nervous about giving my mum the card as I realise I'm kind of expecting her to react for everyone (she'll be opening it in front of all my siblings and their partners!). I'm the first in the family to sprog and the youngest of my siblings too (I'm 25).

Yeaj thats right, I didnt. But if the baby is uncooperative they will either ask you to go away and drink, or in my case go to the loo! So I wouldnt worry about that aspect.

I have had a few complications so had quite a few scans and appointments and all the staff, bar one, have been utterly brilliant. At my 20 week scan they really took the time to show me each thing they were measuring and reassuring along the way. It was similar to my 12 week as well.

I'm sure her reaction will be lovely, and so nice that the rest of your family will be there too! Best of luck!

When I had my baby at kings they had a machine you could purchase print from. I never used it as was given them both times

this was in 2010 though

Thanks Queef. As I said earlier my DP's brother and his partner had their baby at Kings a year and a half ago and did have scan print outs but the protocol must have changed since then. As long as I can snap a pic somehow then I'm happy!

I paid £1.50 or something for my scan pics. My care at King's was amazing, you're in safe hands.Flowers

We just took a pic of the scan too. Kings scanning facilities are world class and about a million times better than St Thomas' where we went last time. The 12 week scan is incredibly thorough, we were in for nearly an hour. They even told us the gender!

My sister is under kings now and has prints, I think she had to pay for them. I was under them in 2011 and have so many scan pics (complications, lots of scans) and don't pay for any.

Their policy is you take a picture of the screen which is incredibly good quality and that is what we did at our 20 week scan.

They can do prints but I only know this as we had to go through the CVS procedure after a higher risk of a chromosome issue from our 12 week scan and we'd forgotten to get a picture and I was so upset. They asked me to wait for the other scan they were doing was finished and they printed 5 off for me which was so lovely of them.

However as far as I know as a rule they don't do this.

Yes, I think it says on the letter. The new centre has only been open a year and possibly the policy has changed. They are awesome and the pictures are so much better than the prints I got from Lewisham for DC1.

Thanks for all the new replies ladies. Hmm, the plot thickens!! It seems people have had different experiences there with getting/not getting a print out. Maybe I will wait and see with what happens on the day and DP can take his camera just in case and I suppose I can always ask the sonographer (is that the right term?) on the day.

I'd love to get a printed scan but I know it's not the most important thing in the world, and having a healthy bean is my priority but we were hoping to put a copy in each of our Mum's mothers day card for sunday as a way to let them know that I am expecting.

Really happy to hear that people continue to say they've had such good experiences there though :)

I'll be sure to let you all know what happens!

Haha I had read some people had been told the gender at their 12 week scan at Kings so I did ask at mine. They said they thought they knew but didnt want to say as they didnt feel accurate enough! They asked straight away if I wanted to know at my 20 week scan!

I've had nothing but great experiences with scans at Kings, my last one was at 16 weeks, about 3 weeks ago.
You can ask to take a photo of the screen on your phone, but you have to remember to ask! I then got some prints from photobox.

They have state of the art facilities there, it was very impressive

Report
lightgreenglass · 21/03/2017 15:53

They told us the gender of DS1 correctly at 12 weeks but they thought DS2 was a girl at 12 weeks so at 20 weeks we got a shock! They have brand new facilities now so I think now you have to take a picture with your phone. With DS1 and 2 they gave us photos without us having to pay. My last pregnancy they never mentioned anything about scan pictures.
