Treatment for morning sickness

Am 7 weeks pregnant with DC2. My previous pregnancy was plagued by sickness and utterly miserable. This time I've promised myself that I'll treat it and try to stay on top of it, for my sake and that of my 2yo DS.

When I saw the GP for my hospital referral he prescribed me metoclopramide straight away, so I could take it at the first sign and get on top of it right away. I started feeling very very unwell last week but took the tablets 3x a day and was able to function.

Yesterday I had another GP appointment where he expressed concerns about me being on this medication and switched me to phenergan. 24 hrs later and I feel horrific, and have barely moved all day. I'm dopey, exhausted and incredibly nauseous. Clearly these meds aren't as effective for me.

I'm going to try and see the GP again tomorrow but do you think they'll allow me to go back on the meds that actually work? I'm utterly miserable on the current ones.

I think they are reluctant to keep you on metaclopromide for extended periods as it has been known to cause side effects in the mum (not baby) I think some of the side effects mentioned were anxiety and depression. There are others that may work just as well for you. Sickness support recommended stemesil (sp?) to me and this has worked well so far

The only thing that ever worked for me (5 children) was acupuncture.

I'm so sorry you're going through this - it's just more awful than you can describe to people isn't it?

My first pregnancy the medication they gave me didn't work & instead of persisting I moved in with my retired parents and puked it out until around 20 weeks. This time round (I'm currently 28 weeks) the HG has been even worse & have DC1 to look after so not an option!

I tried almost everything licensed; Stemitil, metcloperamide, Cyclizine, promethezine, (including injections in hospital) none of which touched the sides until a last ditch attempt with Phenergan. So I know exactly how awful it can make you feel in terms of drowsiness. I vividly remember the sickness easing at exactly the moment my eyes started closing and stinging with tiredness on the nursery run.

Does it not improve the sickness at all for you? If not, I would definitely not continue with it due to the side effects (I did but it's only because it was the only thing that worked even a little bit).

I'm not sure about the metcloperamide use medium term but in case it's a definite no, there are a few more different medicines (which are similar) available if you haven't tried them yet!

I really feel your pain (and looking after another DC whilst going through this is pretty much torture). I hope you find something to help soon Flowers

You can try cyclizine, but as another antihistamine it could also make you sleepy. As an aside, you should adjust to sleepy side effects after a few weeks.

If it's really bad, ask about Odansetron. That's what I'm on. And check out the Pregnsncy Sickness Support website.
