University hospital wales?? If thats the hospital you mean, its a very good hospital. I think it has to be as its one of the biggest and most important hospitals in the country. I was supposed to have my baby in a birth center but because of gd & extra fluid i had to chose between uhw and the royal gwent, went round both of them and uhw was really good. Most of my family (and me) were born there, its clean and has the maximum facilities. Basically you could have the most complicated pregnancy but they would have the means to sort you out, so even if you have an easy pregnancy, i think its reassuring to know they have so much there x

university hospital Wales? I was due to have my son there, but as he came a little early I ended up in the consultant led unit (which is just upstairs) from the midwifery led unit. Couldn't really fault the consultant led unit though. the care is provided by the same midwives, they are just rotated around. Aiming for the midwifery led this time around for the private room, birthing pool etc.

I've heard mixed things, but I think it's always the case that some people have a bad experience. Is it a choice between this and another yyf birth centre is supposed to be very good if you live that way.

I had DS there and had a fantastic experience. All of the midwives and support staff were encouraging and supportive with all of us. Everyone has their own private room with a double bed so it felt very relaxed and personal. A few friends also gave birth there and had similarly positive experiences. It is reassuring that if there are any problems, they can whip you upstairs to consultant led.

Yes Univesity hospital Wales :) i havent had a tour. Family members have delivered on consultant lead not midwifery. Luckily ive had a generally low risk pregnancy and wanted the more homely comfort, I would love a birthing pool. Thank you for your replies ladies

I'm also hoping to use a birthing pool at UHW come October so you'll have to let me know what your experience is OP! 😊 I know of one friend who gave birth in the midwife-led unit there and she had a positive experience so fingers crossed for us! X

DD was born on the CLU, as this one will be, so no direct experience, but I've heard very good things about the MLU from friends. It always looks nice in there when they leave the blinds open too!

Yes, let us know how it goes :) I'll hopefully be there in June unless anything unexpected means I end up in clu again. As I say though clu was fine so don't panic if you do end up there for any reason - you don't get all the lovely home comforts of the midwifery led but it's really fine ( I heard a lot of horror stories) and comforting to know it's so near by if you do need it for any reason. You also have a great nicu on site so you are covered for any eventuality (although I'm sure you wont need that it's reasuring to know it's all right there).

Just wondering how your experience was @Sweetpeabec? I'm still 15 weeks off due date but it's all starting to feel more real and having dipped in between consultant and midwife led I'm still hanging out for a midwife unit delivery! 😊

Hi mummabubs I found it to be amazing there. I was midwifery led so had my own birthing suite with a labour bed and pool. Didn't use the pool though due to personal choice. Used the birthing balls though.

You ring when your waters break or contractions started. I rang at contraction stage as wasn't sure if I had just wet myself or it was waters breaking. When I got there and found where they are, i was put in the labour suite and I had a midwife that stayed with me throughout the whole thing. She pretty much let me do what I wanted until I was fully dilated. She regularly checked baby's heartbeat and my temperature. Then I used the bed when it was time to push. After birth baby went straight on my belly for skin to skin contact. Even though I was wearing a tshirt. After the placenta came I was encouraged to breast feed and the midwife helped me to latch the baby. Baby got measured abd checked over. Shower after thatvthen got moved to a post labour suite which has a double bed. Sofa and clear crib for baby.

Midwifes helped me latch on and I called them to chech my latch as well. They asked if I wanted help bathing baby, had baby's hearing check and bounty portrait lady the next day.

Only negative thing would be they wanted me out quite quickly after the birth but I asked to stay a bit longer due to having to wait for a lift and they let me stay.

I would use them again and recommend them.

However if you are consultant led or go over due by 13 days and get induced then it's a completely different ward and I can't comment on their services.

Wow, thanks so much for your update @Sweetpeabec, that sounds like such a lovely and containing experience and it's reassuring for me to hear about it. Makes it feel slightly less uncertain too, so thanks again! Xx
