Miscarriage - coping with pain

I am pregnant of a non viable whatever. I took misoprostol tablets this morning to end it. A couple of hours later and I have trouble coping. The pain is really intense and I am sitting in the shower now and trying to distract myself. I am not doing well. I hate pain. It's almost as bad as last time but so much quicker. How do you cope? And how do you cope with childbirth if that is so much worse? I feel sooo shit.

Hi, what have you taken for the pain? You can take paracetamol and ibuprofen, write down when you take what so you don't accidentally overdose. Hot water is good, can you put some music on to distract you? Call your gp for some prescribed painkillers?

Don't underestimate the effect of distress on pain. Labour is painful in parts but as I was in much less distress than my mc it was more manageable.

I took paracetamol. The gyneacologist said not to take ibuprofen because it can slow things down. It just doesn't really help with thecontractions though.

Is there anyone you can call? I was alone for part of my mc and it is not a good place to be

If you are up to it there is a long thread in the pregnancy loss section about self care and what people wished they had known in advance. It might be helpful xx

I've had 5 live babies and 2 miscarriages. Pain wise the natural miscarriage was 4th worst out of the 7. I had prescription strength codeine and paracetamol but the pain was still horrific.

I'm so sorry for your loss and for the pain you're in. The worst thing for me wasn't the pain, but the fear that the pain was going to get worse and more than I cope with. At one point I was bouncing off the walls and making awful noises - it's a truly awful experience and no one ever said it was easy. You also don't get a prize for being brave so if you're really suffering I'd take whatever painkillers you can get your hands on - within reason.

Can someone get some more pills if you don't have the right ones at home? Codeine, paracetamol, ibuprofen, can all be taken together. I'd suggest calling your EPU and telling them how bad it is and asking for help.

Enelya is absolutely right about keeping track of what you take and when.

I got an amazing painkiller from them you put up your bum. I got about 8 or 9 nearly pain-free hours. DH had to drive bloody miles to pick it up but it meant I was able to sleep.

Distraction wise, I found very noisy, shorty, action films were the way to go. My attention span was about 5 minutes and Jason Statham films really helped. Also keep moving, even when you want to curl into a ball. Walk up and down the stairs. go on all fours and bend and arch your back might help. Hot bath (keep the door open if you might get dizzy), hot water bottle, keep your feet warm.

This was a godsend to me as well.

You shouldn't be in so much pain you're panicking, there are loads of things they can give you to help. Please call your GP and/or EPU and get them to prescribe whatever they can, and to advise on the best combinations of what you might have at home.

You will get through it. You're strong and can be brave. They might seem like the longest shortest days ever but there will be light at the end of it. If only that the pain will go.

I'm sending you a gentle hug.

I just wanted to send you some love Chinnygirl.

For what it's worth, my view is to do what you want to do.

I lay in bed, quietly, through my miscarriage. With regularly changed towels under me. I didn't want to speak to any one or see anyone or do anything. I lay, I tested, I slept and relaxed when I could.

Being alone can be something you embrace, rather than be fearful of. If it suits your personality.

Thank you all. I'm trying a couple of your suggestions. I threw up 3 or 4 times and couldnt keep the paracetamol down. I am living in the bathroom now with music and youtube videos.

Try to get whatever pain relief you can.
I don't know if buscopan would help maybe?
Codeine can really help, call 111 ooh and ask them to assist you. They can prescribe over the phone and send the prescription to a pharmacy.
Also push doctor are amazing.
Sending love xxxx

I ended up on gas and air first time after the misoprostol in hospital. Despite heavy bleeding and clots unfortunately the sac didnt come away and i began to miscarry naturally at home 3 days later. It was painful but less so than in hospital. I just lay in the bath for four hours with netflix on the ipad. The pain stopped immediately when then the tissue passed and i just wanted to sleep.

You're all really sweet. It really helped me today to read this.

This is not my first miscarriage but I wasn't coping well. My DP came home earlier and arranged a suppository painkiller for me since I kept throwing up and was
In a lot of pain. The pain is manageable now. This is the first one where I used pills to get the miscarriage started. My other miscarriages happened naturaly and had more of a gradual build up if you know what I mean? That made it easier somehow. This one feels more extreme. I went from nothing to contractions every minute.

I am managing it now. Thank you so so much.

How are you getting on this morning? Did you get any rest at all?

Report
Chinnygirl · 21/02/2017 13:52

I slept quite well. The pain got less before bed so that was nice. I used the second and last dose of tablets this morning. I am now having contractions while feeling totally fine in between them. Today is so much better. This is doable as long as I have these little moments of peace and rest before the next one comes. It also helps in my mind because I can now think during one that this pain will end soon and breath it away. Thank you for asking.
