Pregnancy

If one more person tells me sickness is a good thing...

I will not be responsible for my actions!!

I'm currently sat at work on the toilet floor after heaving away for the 5th time today. Nothing's actually come up yet, probably because I've only managed to eat a rice cake and a few grapes despite being up since 5am.

We've been ttc #2 for 3 years with 4 early losses so I know full well how lucky I am to be pregnant (7 weeks today) and am grateful, truly I am!

But I feel like shit, and I'm so sick of being told by people as I come back out of the toilet with my packet of mints that sickness is a good thing. I'm not complaining to you - You don't have to comment on it!

And now I feel so ungrateful again!

Please don't feel bad. I was very very poorly during early pregnancy up until 18 weeks and OH's mum and nana were very insistent that it was a good thing as it meant all the right hormones is being produced, which I'm sure they meant well but not what you want to hear if you are surviving on sucking ice cubes and working full time. It's so easy for people to say when they aren't going through it!

Agree. Its not what you want to hear. I'm 6 weeks and have been feeling so sick. So many people have been telling me it's a good thing (which I know it is) and suggesting ginger.

Aaaahh!!

Urgh ginger! I can't even smell the stuff after my first pregnancy - ginger tea is not pleasant coming back up!

It sounds like you could have hyperemesis, I know how awful it is so I really feel for you! You can get medication from your gp to help. Also ask him to check your keytones. I hope you some how manage to feel better.

Please visit helpher.org, they are a Hyperemesis support site and offer brilliant information. People who have never had it just wont understand.

Its called crackering ( people who suggest ginger and crackers) isn't it annoying. I know they are trying to be nice but its just pure ignorance to what your going through.

In my first pregnancy cyclizine was my lifeline. Although even taking it, I was still sick, but only once a day. Now 5 weeks with #2 and starting to feel queasy - will be straight to the GP for a prescription as soon as the vomit starts.

Another call for you to see a gp for meds.
I put up with it for weeks and it was pointless. Next time I'd be making a call straight away.
And yes to asking them to check ketones too.
You have my full sympathy - it's awful. Flowers

I was sick the whole pregnancy. Unfortunately u didn't push for tablets. Was under 2 consultants for various reasons and no seemed interested ( I lost weight in pregnancy!!)

I was always thirsty wanted ice cooled drinks even water made me feel ill. I wanted to hit people when they told me to take small sips of water often. Arrgghh as I didn't know how to drink lol!

It's a good sign, have you tried ginger, oh it must be a boy this time, I was was a bit sick too, shouldn't the sickness stop at 12 weeks, ahhhhhh. If I'd had the energy I would have done more than a feeble groan. Like other posters have said do think about medication.

I felt very guilty for having wanted to get pregnant for so long and then cursing it due to ms. I know people think they're being helpful but they really aren't, I threatened to DH to punch the next person who said 'have you tried ginger?' Blush

I was sick multiple times a day, took cyclizine and few awful from weeks 4-12, gradual improvement and now I'm sick maybe once a week, so it can improve.

Please see the GP about meds, they can help.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, I understand the disappointment that you feel so rotten at a time when you think you should be feeling on top of the world! I had hyperemesis for the whole 40 weeks, and it was pretty rough, the meds didn't work for me or my friend who had the same, ginger didn't work, all the standard advice did nothing, I was underweight when I got pregnant and wasn't gaining until the 2nd trimester, but I discovered when I was about 20 weeks that the food that would stay down the longest was protein, I practically lived on party sausages and baby bells from that point. Maybe give that a go? Hth

I'm 29 weeks and still have bad sickness. I too am fed up with people telling me how it's the sign of a healthy baby and that their morning sickness stopped at 12 weeks, or they had none! They also say they really feel for me still having sickness. I know they are only trying to be nice but it's bloody annoying when you've just come out the loo from heaving for 20 mins!!!

So good to hear from other people in the same boat - sorry!

I was the same with my ds who's now 4 yrs. It was somewhat easier as no children to look after and an easier job. With my job now I have to be on the ball and I took meds last time which made me into a zombie and there was no way I could go to work - I don't know what to do for the best.

And yes to the "it should stop at 12 weeks comments". I threw up all day, every day when pregnant with ds until I gave birth at 27 weeks. I felt a million times better the day after I gave birth, despite a traumatic birth.

Silkypyjamas - bizarrrly the only thing that stayed down last time was McDonald's chicken nuggets. Out of 3 meals yesterday, these were the only things that stayed down.

Wait until people start suggesting ginger biscuits. There is a special place in hell reserved for people who do that.

Report
Lules · 15/02/2017 16:45

God I remember my midwife recommending ginger biscuits. I pointed out a bit too forcefully that the smell of ginger made me sick and all of my food choices were based on what they were like to throw back up and ginger was burny. She also told me that I didn't need to be on anti-emetics at 26+ weeks because sickness should have stopped by then. She did change her mind when I fainted during an appointment. My GP was great though.

Have you joined the hyperemesis support thread on the pregnancy board? They were so supportive throughout my pregnancy.

Congratulations on the pregnancy btw, and I hope the nausea stops soon.

WarblingWail · 15/02/2017 16:49

If the meds last time made you sleepy, were you taking promethazine/avomine or cyclizine? Ondansetron is a different class of drug and doesn't have sleepy side effects.

Report
10storeylovesong · 15/02/2017 17:58

It all seems a bit of a blur but cyclizine sounds familiar. Maybe I should pay another visit and discuss it again.

My lovely friend dropped off some ginger ale last night, I didn't have the heart to tell her that just looking at it made me boak!

I've not joined any hyperemesis boards - would feel a bit of a fraud as I'm managing to go to work etc at the moment and only actually throwing up a couple of times a day (the rest is dry retching) so no dehydration or anything. The poor ladies on there have it much worse - actually does make me feel grateful.

Having said that, work sent me home early today as I looked so rough - not a workplace that are known for their sympathy!

If you are ever unfortunate to lose all symptoms and miscarry then that's when you will realise that yes- sickness is a good thing.

I have been on both sides.
Very bad morning sickness with third.

Zero symptoms with third and miscarried at 8weeks

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 15/02/2017 18:32

I'm on a hyperemesis support thread and no one there would consider you a fraud, honestly. It does help even just reading hat others feel the same and the advice is brilliant

Other people are so annoying! I had sickness when I was pregnant with DS but I'm currently 9 weeks with my second and this is a whole other level. I'm taking cyclizine and still feel like death! OP, the just heaving days are worse for me than the days when I am actually sick.

If one more person (looking at you MIL) says "oh it must be a girl this time" I will not be responsible for my actions! Angry

Dry heaving is worse than being sick IMO.

For me hyperemesis is like a really bad hangover - including the 'window of folly' (as my dad calls it) just after you've been sick when you feel ok for about 10 mins.

Dry heaving gives no window of folly even it's just feeling crap constantly.

Join the hyperemesis threads, no one will judge you, I don't post I just read and it makes me feel better!
