EXTREME exhaustion, nausea, feeling weak

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this but I just wanted some advice.

I'm 8 weeks and 1day pregnant with my second & im feeling absolutely rotten. I'm suffering with bad nausea (all day) but no actual sickness. I had this with my first but no where near as bad. I can't stand the smell of ANYTHING, I feel like I want to put plugs in my nose 😂 I know the nausea and smell thing is totally normal but what's really getting me down is the extreme exhaustion and weakness. I literally feel like I can't do anything during the day, everything just makes me feel awful, hoovering, putting stuff away, having a shower!! Everything feels like such hard work and all I want to do is lie down! I feel rotten! I also have dull nagging headaches with it. I've spoken to my midwife and she just says it's normal 😕 it really doesn't feel normal though! I'm off work at the moment and all I do is nap or lie down in the day, and then I'm going to bed at 9pm. I always think il feel better the next day but I don't. It's getting me down. I feel lazy!! I'm not the type of person to sit around and do nothing! I just want to know if anyone else has felt like this in the early stages?

Sorry if I sound dramatic I just feel like I can't express how bad I feel 😞

Jess xx

Yes, I was just the same, beyond exhausted, climbing the stairs may as well have been climbing a mountain. My sense of smell went into overdrive and the nausea was horrible, I used to cling to my mattress like I had sea sickness. It was awful and I felt really, really ill. Then it passed at the 12 week mark, just like that.

I really sympathise, hang it there, it will pass.

I was like this with my second DC who turned out to be a girl (first DC was a boy).

I was so ill even looking at my maternity clothes hanging on the washing like made me vomit!

What made it worse was I started a new contract the day I found out I was pregnant so couldn't take much time off.

I was prescribed cyclazine in the end so I could just about function. Tbh, if my first pregnancy had been like this I would have stuck at one child!

At 13 weeks I felt 100% better and I had a fabulous pregnancy but by god those first few weeks were dreadful.

Really? Although I wouldn't wish this feeling on anyone, it's reassuring to know that someone else has felt like it too! I feel so guilty for wanting to do nothing and nap all the time and I feel like my OH and family just don't understand :( I swear they think I'm just being really lazy :( I'm glad it passed for you, hope I'm the same xx

What's cylazine? I'm sorry you felt so poorly too, it's tough isn't it :( with my first I was in full time work and now I work for myself (but I'm currently doing nothing as I feel so I'll!) I couldn't imagine having to go into work, I don't think I'd make the walk across the car park :( I don't know how some of you do it! Perhaps I'm being a wimp lol xx

I felt like this in both pregnancies- both girls. I also puked every time I ate throughout the entire pregnancy. It's foul. Cyclizine helped me too. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Thanks everyone I'm really glad you've all reassured me. I'm sorry you've all felt like it too, it's horrible! But nice to know I'm not alone with it. Seems to be associated with girls from things I've read?! So maybe I'm having a little miss this time! My 3 year old will be gutted, he's desperate for a boy 😂🙈 xx

Hi Jess!

I'm also very new to the forum - literally just joined and am so glad to see this post! I'm only 6+3, but I too have severe and unrelenting nausea. I explained it to OH as being permanently trapped in that moment just before you vomit where you're salivating, wrenching and belching. All glamorous stuff!

Anyway, I wanted to reply to say that I spoke to my GP today and have been prescribed cyclizine, although I haven't yet taken any. I see a few other members have taken it too, so as an open Q to everyone - do they cause severe drowsiness? I have an account lead at work who likes to make my life miserable, so I need to be mentally switched on so that I can see when said individual is about to throw out a tripwire!!!

Thanks all and hope you feel better soon, Jess 🙂 Xx

I haven't been sick (just constantly feel like I could be) but the exhaustion is impossible. I've got chronic fatigue syndrome and it's basically like when I'm at my worst but without any rhythm or logic. horrendous.

Oh that's pants Hun :( I hope they can help you! I kinda wish I was being sick, I hate the feeling of just nausea. I know how weird! When is your little one 4? Mine turns 4 in April! It will have been the fastest 4 years of my life! I don't know where the time goes! Xx

I had the severe exhaustion first time round, so yes I'd say it was normal. It did go in second tri tho.
I have cyclizine for nausea. It has not made me drowsy that I have noticed, and piriton (another anti histamine) once made me fall asleep at work Blush Having said that I did take the first few either in the evening or when I wasn't going to be at work just in case.

Oh God yes, much sympathy. I only have one child because pregnancy was so awful the first time around that I won't even consider doing it again. Debilitating nausea from week 6. I couldn't talk without retching, every smell made me heave, the thought of all food made me feel so sick that I nearly passed out. I couldn't leave the house because if I passed a pub or restaurant the smell made me vomit, and I couldn't go into my kitchen either for the same reason. I was exhausted all the time and in bed at 7pm every day. I was given anti emetics at 14 weeks pregnant which took the edge off it, but I felt sick for the entire pregnancy. It was miserable.

@coldhandscoldheart thanks for the info re cyclizine! Did you also wake up in the night because of the nausea?! I'm finding it very difficult to stay asleep because of it!! How long do the pills keep the nausea at bay for?! Sense of smell is off the charts too.. it's usually pretty acute, but I could smell garlic on someone's breath at work yesterday and there was no one within about 5 ft of me! I feel like I have a world of scents living in my nostrils at the moment 😷!

Not sure if it will help anyone else but I used to suck fruit flavoured boiled sweets all day long, it helped a tiny bit. Oh and gallons of lemon squash which I'd never drank before or since. It will pass though.

I have had to keep biscuits and water by my bed for in the night/first thing, I couldn't say if it wakes me as elder child sorts that out anyway.
It is getting better as I head for second tri, although quite often get waves in the supermarket or if I get hungry - I have put on so much weight.
Also had to buy a lemon to sniff the other day, not sure what that was all about.

It is fairly normal sadly. I've had it in both my pregnancies. It helps if you can find a way to manage it.

Firstly, go to bed earlier. I was working ft in my first pregnancy and was frequently in bed between 7-8pm. And getting up at the last possible minute.

What worked foe me with the nausea (was only sick twice) was eating small savoury things often. Literally every hour or two in the first 16 wks. Crisps, crackers, cheese, nuts etc. Rice cakes, all the carbs!

Ice lollies helped a lot too.

Current pregnancy has been worse. I'm more tired but less able to rest as ds is 17 months old. He gets up before 5 most days.

What helped a lot though was wearing travel sickness wrist bands. Made a huge difference at the start. Get them from boots.

Well, after throwing up stomach acid and bile this morning I made it into work for a grand total of 30 minutes. My stomach and eosophagus are burning and soda water and Rennie and bread seem to be my only friends... I only hope the next 33 weeks fly by and that at some point I no longer have the nose of a sniffer dog. I have yet to observe any effect from this cyclizine! 😪 Xx
