Pregnancy

1st trimester vs 2nd trimester screening

I've got my 12 week scan tomorrow and a confusing form to fill in. It asks me to choose between

  1. 1st trimester screening - Down's syndrome, Edward's syndrome & Patau's syndrome

or
  1. 2nd trimester screening - Down's syndrome & open neural tube defects

I want screening for all the things (unless the screening itself risky, like amniocentesis). But it looks like I have to choose between Edward's/Patau's and neural tube defects..

The appointment letter says that I have to have discussed this with my midwife and filled in the form before tomorrow, otherwise I'm not allowed 1st trimester screening. My midwife did say something at booking in appointment like 'Do you want screening?' and I said 'yes' and that is all the discussion we had. Where can I get more information?

Right, I've done some googling and found
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/screening-amniocentesis-downs-syndrome.aspx
and
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/anomaly-scan-18-19-20-21-weeks-pregnant.aspx
It looks like I should go for the 1st trimester screening as the 20 week scan will check for neural tube defects anyway. Is that right? I don't mean is that right for everyone, but is it right for me, given I want all the information I can safely get?

You still only qualify for 1st trimester screening at 12weeks x
