Medication for morning sickness?

Hey im just after some advice really.
I am 8 weeks pregnant and for the past 6 days been throwing up constantly and been constipated (easing now) and finally saw the out of hours doctor as yesterday my skin was practically see through and i had no energy. He prescribed a tablet beginning with 'p' (i have put the prescription down and cant find it.. Bloody baby brain haha) and im just concerned about taking it. He assured me it was safe but because he isn't my usual doctor im abit apprehensive about it. Everyone keeps telling me do not take tablets but i am really struggling now and I've tried everything else and its not helping. Can anyone help or advise with this and put my mind at rest as i will ring for my doctor to call me but wont be until this afternoon and im being sick this morning. Thanks you x

Take the tablets! I suffered from severe sickness and hyperemisis from weeks 6-17, I was on 3xanti sickness meds and still hospitalised for dehydration.

The tablets are perfectly safe, if you can't eat/keep down water then you may become dehydrated and end up on a drip. Take whatever you need to get through the sickness, it can be really debilitating - I had no quality of life for 10weeks. Thankfully it's all under control now

Hey thanks for replying. I think im going to have to.. He wanted me to go to hospital and be put on a drip last night but i refused on the condition i drink lots of water even if im being sick and i see my doctor today. Everyone like my nan my mum my sisters friends girls in work etc. So you can see why im so scared. I literally cannot get off the sofa this morning and i too have no quality of life im off work as im so poorly with it.

Omg take the tablets. I suffered from horrendous sickness, I hesitate to call it morning sickness because it was all bloody day! It was hellish and you have my sympathy. I couldn't leave the house, I begged and pleaded and cried on the phone to my gp for something to stop the nausea.

You poor thing. The tablets are probably promethazine hydrochloride (phenergan). It's an antihistamine, very safe and if you are being continually sick you need to take them for your health and the baby. Being hospitalised with dehydration etc is no fun. I think people who have never had terrible pregnancy sickness seem to think it's just mild nausea and you can fix it with ginger biscuits! Hope you feel better soon

Ignore everyone else- the dr knows what they are doing. My MIL was the same- I ignored her, due to her lack of medical degree!

Go and get the drip. You may be drinking lots of water but I may not even be touching the sides of your dehydration. When I was admitted I had 16 bags of fluids by IV in 24 hours and I was still slightly dehydrated.

Look after yourself and accept all the medical help you can get. There's a really good hyperemisis thread here on MN- don't suffer alone. Your family and friends won't understand how bloody awful this is.

Millions of women all over the world take anti sickness medication (myself included) because dehydration and malnutrition WILL harm the baby. And is potentially fatal for the mother.

If you're worried about what "everyone" thinks, don't tell them. You'll hopefully feel so much better in a few weeks that you'll be more confident telling them to take a running jump anyway :)

I was like this in both pg - hospitalised several times between weeks 7-17 both times. The babies (now 5 and 8) are fine.

PS - commiserations, the first halfs of my pg were about the unhappiest times of my life. Pregnancy sickness is bloody hideous, and no one who hasn't had it understands,

You were probably given prochlorperazine. These are an antihistamine that will ease sickness and can make you a little drowsy. If it was me I would take the absolute minimum dose that helps you, I find these tabs take at least half an hour to kick in. For me some vitamin b6 and a swig of gaviscon worked wonders!

I had severe morning sickness this time and had to take tablets to even slightly function and look after my 2.5 yr old. Don't feel bad, take them if you need them. I had to take them until 17 weeks x

For the love of god take the tablets!

And go and et the drip too. It makes you feel better, which means you can eat again, and stop the vicious cycle of feeling sick-not eating-feeling worse etc etc.

And I listened to my mother and her horror stories first time around about medication and I really shouldn't have.

I'll bet the majority of people of your generation giving you 'advice' hVent ever been pregnant, and they definitely haven't had hyperemesis.

I had tablets with both pregnancies and my children are 27 and 20
Both fit and healthy adults apart from a bit of hay fever and mild eczema / asthma
The second pregnancy I rang the doctor in tears demanding a prescription as I couldn't face the hell of HG again. I waited far too long with my first before getting help as everyone kept telling me sickness is normal and I was pregnant not ill
Take the tablets, don't listen to anyone who hasn't experienced HG

I suffered from hyperemesis in all 3 pregnancies I tried cyclazine, prochlorperazine and finally ondansetron which was the only thing that made any difference for me. I have 3 healthy children all born at term weighing good weights. I had very extreme hyperemesis all the way through and without medication would have been at risk of complications caused by severe dehydration. Hopefully it will ease off and not last the whole pregnancy but I would take them. Good luck

Unless those who are telling you not to take the tablets are fully trained medical professionals then why are you listening to them?

Why did you refuse to go to hospital for IV? I've been where you are twice. Awful constant sickness (HG) right up until and during birth resulting in numerous hospital admissions for IV treatment throughout both pregnancies. If you've been vomiting for the past 6 days and are dehydrated your stomach will be dry and irritable which will make keeping even sips of water down hard. You can't control HG when you're dehydrated, it's just a spiral of sickness from there and the best and easiest way to hydrate you would be via IV. Honestly all the tips tricks and antisickness meds in the country wouldn't make you feel as well as a few bags of IV would.

The tablets will be fine. They wouldn't have prescribed them otherwise. Please take them and if they don't work please don't hesitate to ask your GP for some different ones. Ondandestrone were the best I tried. The champagne of antiemetics the nurse at hospital called them.

You can't keep struggling OP, accept the help.

Im not listening to them but they have an opinion. My bf is the worst he keeps saying im pregnant not ill and he clearly will never understand. I am going to take them and my doctor is ringing me with an appointment tomorrow to see where we go from here.. Thanks for your replies x

I am still taking my medication at 36 weeks pregnant. The sickness has nearly stopped but the nausea if I don't take them is still overwhelming.

Dr has now prescribed me 6 weeks worth to get me to the end of this pregnancy.

Baby in all scans and check ups is doing absolutely fine.

Your boyfriend is a twat and 'clearly will never understand' just isn't good enough. For many lucky ladies pregnancy isn't an illness but 'your pregnant not ill' just doesn't apply when you're vomiting to the point your doctor wants to send you to hospital for IV treatment.

Could you both research hyperemesis gravidarum together? Unfortunately it sounds like you may have it and I think you would both benefit from reading others experiences of it.

Before the advent of intravenous hydration and the ability to control vomiting, women DIED of hyperemesis gravidarum/severe morning sickness.

Pregnancy is not an illness in itself but it can sure as hell CAUSE illnesses!

My mum had hyperemesis and got to a stage whereby she couldn't even keep water down and she was highly resistant initially to being hospitalised. The doctor told her pretty frankly that if she continued to stay at home unable even to drink water, she wouldnt last very long. (She did go in for IV hydration and was fine in the end).
