I'm 38 wks and recently I see a lot of floaters and my vision is blurry I can barely see the tv!! My midwife has checked me for pre e and GD and she told me I must see my optician. But I rang them and they have no apps until Jan!!!! My friend said sometimes it can be caused by the pregnancy and go back to normal after the baby arrives. Does anyone know this to be true?

I'm a midwife and not come across this. You say you've been checked for pre-eclampsia, did the midwife check your blood pressure and urine? Any pain under your ribs? Headaches? If these are all ok then yes probably optician is the best bet. As for getting an appointment, have you tried opticians linked to supermarkets? Tesco or Asda often have them in larger stores.

I am horrendously short sighted and on my first pregnancy, my prescription worsened a little but not in a way that was noticeable to me. It was only picked up during my annual optician check up and they advised waiting and retesting again after pregnancy in case it was related.

In my second however, sudden changes to my vision at 36 weeks (seeing floaters) led me to seek help where they found my blood pressure was sky-high. Has your change come about suddenly? If so, I would seek a second opinion, perhaps from a doctor rather than a midwife. Blurry vision in late pregnancy is a very worrying sign. i fear your midwife is not taking this seriously enough. Either it is pregnancy related and needs obstetric attention, or it is a sudden major deterioration in your eye health and would need to be investigated by a doctor (ophthalmologist) not just a regular optician.

Also probably stating the obvious but please don't drive if your eye sight has gone bad.

Actually I really think you ought to contact the hospital where you are booked about this unless you've already been seen there OP? I'd probably want to run some bloods on you just to be sure.

For my pre-e testing, I was admitted to hospital for 24 hour urine collection and other monitoring - the simple dipstick test was not seen as enough to rule out pre-e.

Your sight is so important - I would not take any chances with it. If they are confident it is not pregnancy complications, insist on an opthamology appointment as early as possible.

I do have astigmatism and wear glasses or contacts but I gave up on the contacts as they made my eyes feel dry so my glasses are fine and do help a lot but not as much as they did a few weeks back. And Iv had no headaches or swelling and yes Iv had a 24hr urine check and it was all fine. I will see if I can get my eyes checked elsewhere before Christmas
