Should risk it?

DH and I are supposed to be spending christmas with family, but they have just emailed to say they have stinking colds, but don't think it's the flu (which makes me think it isn't, as I have known whenever I've had the flu!). Im 12 weeks pregnant with my first. Should I risk spending christmas with them or stay at home just in case?

DH and I haven't bought presents for each other (as we are doing secret santa with the family), have no food in, and I am feeling rubbish so wouldn't be a huge amount of company for DH, so don't think it would be a very merry christmas at home on our own (and Christmas is all about family!)

At 12 weeks and with just bad colds, I really think you would be overreacting to not spend Christmas with them.

As you say, they would know if they had flu.

You could catch far worse whilst doing a supermarket shop or sitting on the bus.

I understand the anxiety, but you can't stop life during pregnancy 'just in case' or you'll get very bored and end up with no friends (only joking!).

I'm glad you said that, Ineednewshoes, I feel the same, but DH is a worrier and has me thinking Im being a bit blasé about the pregnancy thing so just wanted to check I wasn't under reacting!

It's a cold.

Unless you plan on living in a bubble you'll come into contact with colds everywhere. If it was flu they'd know.

I'm guessing you would have already had the flu jab , if not it might be worth getting it.
Also you can catch a cold anywhere, out and about Christmas shopping or at the supermarket, unless you're going to stay at home for the next 6 months I would go.

If you catch a cold, you'll feel grotty, be a bit fed up you can't take anything helpful and be better in a few days, having been able to persuade DH to wait on you

Jeez, my DH seems to have a permanent cold thanks to his stupid air conditioned work. I'm probably not going to avoid him for the next 28 weekks....

Ok I did keep my stuffy full of it dad at arm's length yesterday but as he dropped off on the sofa, don't think he was too offended!

I'm quite risk averse in pregnancy but standard winter colds wouldn't bother me. Just be meticulous about hand hygiene - bring a little hand sanitizer bottle and don't share hand towels, just use loo roll to dry your own hands if it would be too obvious to produce your own bundle of paper towels, etc.

They would definitely know if they had flu, so you should go. tell your DP pregnant women get colds every day, it's not the end of the world :D except you can't really take any mess :(

I would go - as you say they probably just have a cold. The flu shot is available to pregnant women for just this reason. If you haven't already had the shot you can talk to your doctor or practice nurse about it.
