Old wives tales - which were correct for you? (light hearted)

Just that really, all in the name of fun!

I read about one in the latest chapter of my baby book last night that I'd never heard of before. It's the only one I've come across so far that was accurate for me:

If your linea nigra stops at your belly button it's a girl, but if it extends higher and reaches closer to your ribs then it's a boy. Smile

Morning sickness and all washed out. Craving a lot of sweet things and carrying more in the bum = girl. Yep.

No morning sickness, looked well for the pregnancy, carried all in the front and high and not fussed over sweets= boy. Yep it was a boy

Terrible heartburn = baby with lots of hair was true for my first.

Just out of curiosity...what does your book say if you don't have a linea nigra at all?!

I'm still pregnant (38+4) and on team yellow as I don't know if I'm having a boy or girl so quite intrigued by now about what's causing me great discomfort and threatening to appear over Xmas lunch...!

Will read other replies with interest and let you know if any come true for me!! Xmas Smile

Yes heartburn for hairy babies

True for both

Bella1985 Sadly it doesn't account for having no line at all? The old wives didn't account for every eventuality it seems Grin Good luck with everything though. What a wonderful Christmas present to receive (potentially!)! Xmas Smile

Also, I just realised I didn't note in my original post that I'm having a boy. I didn't realise no morning sickness was a sign for a boy. We'll make that 2 that were true for me!

Sorry folks, I had absolutely no heartburn and a daughter like a hairy little monkey, my child was born with a head that would have put Elvis to shame,

Also no morning sickness at all and yep a girl. 😃

What if you have morning sickness but not fussed over sweet things ? Am I having a hermaphrodite?

Sick as a dog all day long and utterly exhausted with DD. Felt so healthy and well with DS that I kept forgetting I was pregnant. Boy bump is indeed high and all to the front, from the back I don't look pregnant at all. With DD I was pregnant in my hips arse and legs as well as belly

Heartburn=hairy, oh yes! Could put a bobble in my DD hair and her shoulders were even furry bless her!

Lots of actual sickness but not much nausea or feeling poorly for my daughter. This pregnancy I have had 0 actual sick but feeling on the verge 24/7 weeks 6-10... got my scan tomorrow at 13+1 am curious if the difference means this is a boy?!

Remember it's all just old wives tales. Not usually good at being accurate.

Just a bit of fun

I had thought that the heartbeat one had been true for my first two dc (boys) but think it must be maternally linked instead as third child similar heart beat rate in utero but was a girl.
Sickness in first trimester = girl, no sickness = boy was true for me. Bump size and shape was the same all three times.

Report
Isadora2007 · 20/12/2016 12:14

The heart rates have been correct for all four. Two boys two girls.
Consistently under 140 for boys and over for girls.
Both boys have been huge though so maybe that affected heart rate?

Heartburn only one pregnancy with hairiest child (dd1)

Morning sickness not true as mine got worse each pregnancy but was BGGB

Both girls I craved ice and both boys strong diluting juice

Morning sickness = girl ✅
Heartburn = lots of hair ✅

I didn't have a linea nigra

In terms of the baby being born, cabbage leaves on my breasts really helped with engorgement pain.

Lookinatu · 20/12/2016 12:43

Morning sickness with both DS and DD. Did have a sweet craving with DD though.

Oooh off to loo at work to check where recently appeared linea nigra goes up to!

I thought I had heartburn with my bald baby, until I got pregnant again. Heartburn doesn't t really describe it. Reflux and vomiting thought the entire pregnancy, ended up with a baby with long hair!

Report
TallyHoAndToodlePip · 20/12/2016 13:08

Yeah none of these methods are reliable so take them with a pinch of salt everyone Smile

Is it weird that I'm hoping for a hairy baby? I haven't had any heartburn yet but I know that means nothing really Wink

marmite your post made me laugh! Report back with your findings!

... It goes up quite a way past belly button! Another old wives vote in favour of boy for me then Wink

Not fussed for sweet stuff
Feeling pretty good in 2nd trimester so far - people keep commenting how well I'm looking and I do sometimes forget i'm pregnant
Don't look pregnant from behind (yet!)

I did have quite bad nausea and sickness in 1st trimester though just to contradict things a bit!

Morning sickness and sweet cravings - girl- correct

No morning sickness, a glowing healthy pregnancy-boy- correct

Also, I didn't have any nesting with DS, I was OBSESSED with nesting with DD, to the point I couldn't relax ever and cried because (amongst other things) DH hung the towel up wrong. All of my friends had strong nesting urges with girls.

I had hyperemesis and was hospitalised for vomiting and had a boy. As did Kate Middleton.

Also, really suffered with heartburn and have a very bald baby!

I did, however, see 4 magpies around the time we were ttc!

Boy - no sickness, people saying I looked well (perhaps politeness!), heart beat sounded like a train, craving carbs, spots got bad for a few weeks (extra testosterone?)

Girl - heart rate fast

Nub wasn't clear in our pic and I still don't understand skull theory

It's a boy Grin

Carolann8584 · 21/12/2016 11:29

Really bad heartburn, morning sickness started at 8 weeks and like clockwork stopped at 12 weeks, everyone says I look well, carrying high and all up front. No Linea Nigra. Having a girl. Will have to wait until March to find out if she's got hair lol

Both my OH and I are fair haired and didn't have hair til we were nearer 1 so not holding my breath for the hair part Smile

Love your stories! Smile

I wonder if any 'new' wives tales might come about one day? Or would you say things like the nub and skull theories are just that? I know there's a bit more logic and evidence to them though. Nub theory proved accurate for me!

Horrendous heartburn, was on medication. Baby had loads of hair and 10 weeks later she's still got it! Also craved sweet things, didn't have a sweet tooth before.
