Hi all,

I've just had a call from my midwife to say that I'm anaemic. She has advised that I take 200mg iron tablets 3 times a day. I was just wondering if anyone else has or had had this and how it affected them and baby.

Thanks in advance

I have just been told I had it too! I have been feeling very breathless and my heart rate is resting at around 130 and going upto 200 when walking around. I went to the GP with the breathless and my pulse was checked and was 210 when I was there so I was sent straight to hospital!! I was met my cardiac Drs and was terrified!! They done an ecg which was normal and my pulse was coming down to 130 so they took blood and my iron is low! So Iv too been put on iron but I'm having an iron drink they said as the tablets can cause constipation and I have this already. I asked if my baby is ok? And they said yea he's fine he's getting all he needs and I'm going without lol. So I will feel rough for a while yet while I'm waiting for this iron to kick in. But besides this I need blood taken in 3 weeks to ensure my iron is back up for the birth as I'm 31wks now

I was anaemic with my DS1 last year was prescribed ferrous glauconate, however they caused me to become so constipated I stopped taking them.
I started taking spatone which is a liquid form and continued with these through breast feeding and still in my latest pregancy.

Within a week or so I noticed my energy levels had increased so doing things became a little bit easier.
No lasting effects on me or baby who was born at 9.2 lb on his due date.

I'm 26 weeks with twins and taking ferrous sulphate 200mg prescribed at 3 a day but I struggled with upset stomach, pains and diarrhoea so have knocked the dose down to 2 a day after food. Thats much better. I'm eating iron rich foods, plenty greens. Take tablet with fresh orange as the vitamin c helps absorb the iron whilst anything with caffeine stops it. Also take spatone but currently run out! Hope you feel better soon OP.

I had that. The tablets made my pooh black/green but that's about it.
No effect on baby and came off them once blood returned to normal.
Nothing to worry about at all, vet common

Thank you so much for all of your reassurance. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm a bit worried about getting the side effects from the tablets but I guess it's better than being sleepy and dizzy! Xx
