Hi, I'm 6+2 after 2nd round of IVf with our much longed for 1st baby. Had light bleeding at end of last week so had a scan on Friday at 5+6 which showed a heartbeat - PHEW! Woke up this morning with PJ's soaked in blood & then passed a large clot about 1inch long (sorrt if TMI). Been to hospital for another scan this morning, heartbeat & baby still there but they can now see a small bleed on the edge of the sack which could stop or which could result in miscarriage. I've left hospital feeling relieved for the good news that our baby is still with me but feel like it's only for now and looking for some positive stories from anyone with similar experiences?

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Seeing baby at the gestation they should be and a heartbeat are very positive things. Clots on the placenta can cause dramatic bleeding (My sister had to replace her mattress at 10 weeks pg and the baby survived). I've got my fingers crossed that baby sticks around. Flowers

Thanks so much Imnotaslimjim. It's so scary, especially when it has taken us soooo long to get to this stage. Although I hate to hear of other people going through this, it's nice to hear a story of someone who it all worked out well for. I just feel that after last Friday we were relieved, but now I feel like we will be on complete pins til 12 weeks - or beyond! We have our viability scan on 21st and it seems an age away

I had a huge bleed with clots at 11 weeks and I was convinced I was having a misscarriage. Went to a and e they scanned me and baby was there. A couple of days later went for another scan and they told me I had a blood clot on the placenta and I may have a misscarriage and whilst I was still bleeding it's classed as a threatened misscarriage.

I bled for around 4 weeks. I'm now 22 weeks pregnant with a baby boy.

It was an awful time and I didn't think I was going to get here.

Hope everything goes ok for you. Xx

It's called a sub-chorionic haematoma. I also had one. Had a huge bleed (with contractions) at 6.5ish weeks and the clot I lost was massive. Baby was all fine and am now over 31 weeks. I bled/spotted until just before 12 weeks and noticed how active I was correlated to how much I bled, so put myself on modified bed rest, and any time the bleeding increased again EPU were happy to give me another quick scan for peace of mind (I had 6 scans by 15 weeks, it was very reassuring).

Whatever you do, don't google, as you will find lots of (American) websites telling you you have a much greater chance of miscarriage. I found an excellent clinical trial ran in Australia that found there was no greater risk of miscarriage in pregnancies with sub-chorionic haematomas, so I focused on that. I scoured forums and also found that the vast, vast majority of women who had a similar thing also had successful pregnancies.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I currently have one - diagnosed at 6 weeks after a big bleed. Had another big bleed at 9 weeks, and again at 10 weeks. Since then, I've had dark red/brown bleeding - less of it but more frequently. According to the doctor, my clot is now just above the cervix so might cause it to bleed out more. Last scan was at 11+3 and baby was fine. 12 week scan on thurs at 12+5, and again very nervous everything will be ok. Although it's not always advised in the UK, I think bed rest has definitely helped me (especially in the early weeks), and drinking absolutely tonnes of water - it relaxes the uterus so stops it contracting if the blood is irritating it. I'm certainly not out of the woods yet, but I'm told these things usually resolve themselves eventually. Doesn't mean it's particularly easy seeing blood tho... Thinking of you Flowers

Hi Ladies, thank you SO much for your messages, it really has calmed me down and made me think that this is much more common than I realised and also so lovely to hear of ladies and babies who have made it through the other side :-)

Wishing you all lots of love for the rest of your pregnancies xxx
