Pregnancy

So very, very sick :(

I'm 8wks pregnant with DC4 and absolutely sick as a dog, there is no set time of day when it happens, it's 24/7. I've been going to bed early every night so I can sleep to get away from it. Eating helps even though I don't feel like eating but the effort involved in eating makes me feel even sicker.

Yes, I'm aware of how whiny I sound Grin

My kitchen stinks, my living room stinks, my bathroom stinks, my hallway stinks and my bedroom stinks. DH assures me they don't but my nose tells me they do. I'm supposed to be cooking dinner for the DC right now and I can't because I can't face going in the kitchen and turning on the oven. As soon as it heats up its like I can smell every single meal that's ever been cooked in it. I've thrown up so much that I've stripped the top layer off my tongue, it's got that horrible stinging burnt feeling you get if you drink a hot drink too quickly.

Has anyone got any suggestions for ways to combat sickness? It was never this bad in my previous pregnancies.

I really feel for you. I had sickness from around 9 until 16 weeks, almost every day. Everyone's different but here are some things I found that helped -

Keep eating. An empty stomach can make you feel more nauseous.
Invest in lots of frozen/ready/quick meals so you don't have to spend as much time cooking.
Have some biscuits by the side of your bed to eat as soon as you wake up.
Ginger is supposed to help a lot of people but it didn't do much for me as I don't really like it.
Eating until you're full is a bad idea. So is eating acidy foods like tomatoes.
Have windows open as much as possible during the day for fresh air.
Buy some sweets you can suck/chew throughout the whole day like mints or lemon sherbets. Can take your mind off bad smells/tastes.
Drink lots and lots of fluids! I found lemonade really helpful as it replaces sugar as well as water.

I had hyperemesis with my first pregnancy and it was truly horrific Sad
I couldn't go more than 30 mins to an hour without puking up.
If you're being sick so much, have you had your urine tested for ketones? Sometimes medication is the only way!
After 3 days of the constant puking in this pregnancy I didn't even try to ride it out because I was scared of hyperemesis again...I went straight to the doctor and begged for the medication I had last time! She gave me it, and I slowly started taking less and less of it and then at about 14 weeks I was completely fine without meds - obviously I wasn't destined to have hyperemesis again this time, but the sickness was still really bad!

Go to your doctor!! They couldn't fix my nausea but many many drugs later at least I could function with some normality.

Sending sympathy, it's awful. I remember feeling so sick even all through the night when I was asleep (who knew that was even possible!) and it was crushing mentally as well as physically. I would go straight to the doctor, tell them you can't cope and want some medication. And then if that medication doesn't work then go back and demand something else. Only thing that helped me a little was salt and vinegar crisps, mini cheddars and green apples. Hope you're feeling better soon!

You poor thing. I had this too, poor DS lived off cereal and sandwiches as they smelt the least.

I found a smell I could tolerate (lavender) and used to carry a bit of cotton wool in it to sniff deeply, esp on train on commute to work, people STANK (booze, garlic, coffee etc). The food thing is so true though, being totally empty is definitely worse

Camembertie-you just reminded me, I used to keep satsuma peel in my pocket to sniff Blush.

Go to the doctor and ask for meds. If you are too ill to get there (I was!) ask for a phone consultation. My GP prescribed over the phone and I sent a friend to get it.

It's not worked miracles but by god it made a difference. I'm on avomine (promethazine teoclate).

Be clear with them whether you need anti nausea or anti vomiting drugs as there are different options and you need the right thing.

The key danger here is dehydration, but also the damage that will be done to your oesophagus and mouth and teeth from all the vomiting. If you tell them you have sustained damage already, any weight loss and if you are struggling to get enough fluids, these are the key red flags and you should have no difficulty getting meds.

Pop over to the hyperemesis thread, they are a lovely supportive bunch and can give you info.

Please get some help.

Thanks everyone Flowers

DH came home from work to the DC going wild in the living room while I was hugging the toilet upstairs. He had to do their tea and sort bedtime. I tried to help by putting DS2 to bed but ended up falling asleep cuddled up in the bed with him. So have had DH moaning that it must be nice to sit about all day and then have a little nap and he's so hard done by because he's had to work all day and then do stuff when he got home Hmm

Think he realises he's being a dick though because he's made me food and has given me the TV remote.

I will make a GP appointment, I didn't realise I could get medication as I thought they'd tell me it's "just" morning sickness. They're closed now for the weekend and I go away on Monday for the week. It's not really an issue for out of hours so will have to wait until I get back. I'm at the point where it's really dragging me down, I feel like such a wuss but I'm just so fed up, I've been feeling like this since a few days before my missed period so a little over four weeks now and it feels like it's never going to end.

Uber if your sick to the point where you can't function normally, and look after your kids as you normally would, then it's definitely not "just morning sickness".
My old boss told me to get a grip because it was "just morning sickness"....a few hours later, one of the guys who lived in the barrack block I was cleaning found me at the bottom of a flight of stairs, having passed out at the top after a morning of near constant vomiting. But it was "just morning sickness" Hmm

It is an out of hours thing if you have hyperemesis.

At least ring them, my friend had it for 6 months and was hospitalised four times.

Don't suffer, ring out of hours.

Hello, I can't really improve on the excellent advice you've got. All I can say is- you don't have to suffer, please see your doctor. Keep an eye out for dehydration and seek help if you're worried. Pop over to the HG support thread if you'd like to- it's very supportive and has got me through the first 20 weeks of pregnancy!

I get the stink thing. I said to my dh our house stinks! I said yesterday i need to get out because I cant stand the smell. I spend most of my time upstairs if I can because downstairs seems worse. I'm 9 weeks and suffering

Report
Ubercorn · 09/07/2016 11:51

catsarecrazy, that's exactly how it is! The house smells wrong.

I've been on the phone to out of hours and they're ringing me back shortly about a prescription. I've said that if I had to choose one, the nausea is worse than the vomiting. I can vomit and move on until the next time I need to vomit but the nausea is constant and relentless and I think makes the vomiting worse. I'm almost sure if I could sort the nausea then I wouldn't be sick as much.

This baby is going to be my troublemaker, isn't it?

I can totally relate to the house smelling weird - it totally changes on my staircase - the downstairs just smells stale and unpleasant to me, but upstairs smells fine. To other people the house smells completely normal and fresh Confused

I had this in my last pregnancy too, and thanks to constant nausea and tiredness I spend most of my time in bed atm anyway. I'm 11 weeks.

My Mama Sea Bands are helping with the nausea, thank god, and when I do need to venture downstairs I get DH to light candles (with scents I can stomach) beforehand to mask the smell.

Anti sickness meds do not work for me. I was prescribed several different ones in my last 2 pregnancies and nothing stopped the vomiting. I was sick from 6 weeks until labour with DD, with no let up, several times a day but I managed to keep one meal a day down which helped keep me going. I lost my baby boy at 17 weeks last year, and I was in and out of hospital on a drip with that pregnancy as I couldn't even keep water down. This time the sickness is manageable, currently, and everything smelling and tasting wrong sucks but I'm counting my blessings that I'm not in hospital, and as soon as I deliver my baby food will taste amazing again and all this unpleasantness will have been worth it Cake x

Are you still passing urine? I let it get so bad because it was 'only morning sickness' that I was barely passing urine and my vomit was green. I landed myself in hospital for 24hours being rehydrated I very nearly passed out on the way to the Drs and if I hadn't had a friend who could drive me to the hospital he was going to get an ambulance so it can be really serious.

Fizzy water
Ginger tea
Fresh melon and pineapple
Sherbet lemons
Sipping and snacking constantly rather than meals

And none of those properly worked

It's grim. This too will pass. Flowers

I'm sorry you're having this problem. Haven't experienced it myself but there are two things that have worked for others that I know of: munching on raw ginger (you don't need much, it's strong), and homeopathic treatment -- the latter not self-prescribed over-the-counter remedies but from a proper homeopath as it has to be tailored to you. I'm not a homeopath by the way, have just seen it work miraculously for this condition. It's safe to take in pregnancy.

I feel for you on the bloodhound sense of smell. When I was pregnant nearly the whole office was doing the 5:2 diet - so it felt like at any one time somebody a few desks away was eating a boiled egg as part of their 500 calories. Boak. Worst smell ever.

I really really need help and advice!!
I am 9 weeks pregnant and really struggling...
I constantly feel sick & so extremely tired I almost feel like I am drunk!
I am starting a new job tomorrow and worried about this affecting my performance at work.
The thought of ALOT of food makes me feel so sick, the smell of cooking turns my stomach, my sense of smell is so strong everything is making me feel horrible and hot!!
I just feel like I can't function like a human being. My eyes feel strange like a dizzy/drunk feeling. I just can't get rid of this feeling Sad

Ugh, that brings back memories. With my first, I was sick 24/7 well into the fourth month. Nothing helped. Had to spend time in hospital twice, so dehydrated, drip-fed the second time, ketones pretty bad. Just talking would make me throw up. I lost 30lbs, couldn't take baths, get out of my bed, nothing...

I'd say go with whatever you think you might fancy and try and eat it - one day it worked, the next it wouldn't: clementines, melba toast, mints, bland soup. Keep on trying. I used to eat/drink something and then lie perfectly still so my stomach could do its work. Smile Sounds like there's medication now, I'm jealous. I got a few anti-nausea injections in hospital but nothing else.

Oh, and don't let anyone go, just eat a ginger biscuit and you'll feel better (as if you've not tried that before). This is not just a little bit of morning sickness, I call it allergic to being pregnant! You need to take care of yourself and get help if it gets unbearable and you get really weak. And as they said before, get your ketones checked.

At the end of it all, after I gave birth, I was the same weight as before... and had a big bouncing boy - keep your eyes on the future. Good luck.

5 weeks now with DC3, and I can feel it beginning.

What has most helped me before has been keeping hydrated (fizzy water seems easier to stomach than tap water) and getting as much fresh air and exercise as I can. Also the realisation that anyone who claims to offer a fail-safe or guaranteed cure is a lying scumbag looking to swindle you. At about 9wks with DC1, I spent twenty quid on three lollipops which some idiot website conned me into believing would help (they were basically what I could have got for 20p at the corner shop). Don't fall for it!!!
