bleeding at 6 weeks, and worried....

hi all, i have been TTC for 2 years and in the last 18 months i have had two miscarriages, we waited 6 months after the last one and 11 months later i am pregnant again! hurrah! however 3 days ago i started spotting brown blood, and today it has become more red, it is still light.

after the first miscarriage i began spotting in the week prior to my period and bleeding after sex. i was about to have my cervix examined to check for cervical erosion when i discovered i am pregnant.

i am trying to be pragmatic and recognise it is likely to be my cervix that is bleeding, however, my history also is making itself known in the terror i am feeling every time i go to the loo and see blood.

i have spoken to the dr and they think its likely my cervix as does the midwife, but neither will explore it for me until my pregnancy is further along, im struggling with managing the fear as because of my age this is likely to be my last pregnancy.

any thoughts or insight or reassurance greatfully recieved!

Did you say you were spotting in the week or so leading up to your period in the months before you got pregnant? This is the same for me. I had pre-menstrual spotting for 2 years whilst ttc. It was the same in the month I conceived and for the first 10 or so weeks of pregnancy. I was then put onto the prism trial and all spotting has stopped, which is great. Scan at 13 weeks looks good and baby is doing well. Whilst you cannot say spotting is normal in pregnancy it is quite common. It may be a cause for concern but in many cases it is not the end of the road. Good luck. I hope you and baby are ok.

Thanks yes I have been spotting post ovulation pre period for more than a year effort concievin this time! What is the prism trial?? So glad things are going well for you!! Xx thanks for your reply! Xx

Can you try to push for a can at the early pregnancy unit? It could be too early for them to see anything, but may be worth asking. They put my mind at rest a few days ago when I had a bleed!
Some accept self-referral - I found a list of my local EPUs online...

The prism trial is to see if progesterone supplementation in early pregnancy prevents/lowers the risk of miscarriage. They are enrolling women who experience spotting in the first trimester however it is only available in a select number of hospitals. It is a double blind trial so you may receive a placebo but there is a 50/50 chance of getting the progesterone which is better the nothing. I am convinced I got the progesterone as my spotting stopped the day I started the suppositories and I had been bleeding almost continually prior to this. My progesterone levels had been borderline on every day 21 test I did whilst ttc. I also have endometriosis and a low AMH level so the odd where against us conceiving naturally but it did happen. You should be able to get an early scan at your local EPAU, speak to your GP or midwife if you have one. I had 2 scans prior to my normal nuchal fold scan due to the spotting and it helped me to see that the baby was developing normally. Please ask any questions you want. I found the support on here amazing during the infertility issues and in the early stages of the pregnancy and hope I can now help out with any knowledge I have gained.

thankyou, i checked it out but i am too old for the trial. i used progesterone suppository for my last pregnancy that ended in miscarriage, i was in another country and it was a normal treatment there. when i had blood tests they said that all my hormonal levels were great and there was no obvious reason for the two miscarriages. i am hoping i can get an early scan, they have told me that it is still too early, though when i was in germany they scanned immediately from the first visit to the gynae. i am nervous because i am not really feeling sick, i feel well! im tired and i have v sore boobs, and only faint nausea here and there. i so want this baby!!

dodi, self referral? did you just call them up? my dr called them for me and they said it was too early....perhaps i ought to try again!

I am approx 5 weeks and started spotting last Tuesday. I had been under a private consultant as was about to start IVF (after 5 years of infertility) when I fell pregnant naturally! My spotting was dark and is now red and varies day to day there are no cramps and no clots and this is keeping me positive. I emailed my consultant as not been to see my GP yet and he has been reassuring me but said to come and see him which I did on Thursday. He still doesn't seem concerned about the bleed as its only when I wipe after going to the toilet. He told me there was no point scanning and put me on progesterone pesseries. Private prescription so cost me £70.

So I have been on these since Thursday eve and I am still bleeding / spotting. I am trying my best not to worry! However this is such a limbo time as until you can be scanned and see a heartbeat.

I have consulted Dr Google! And searched for so many posts on here and on the Internet and it seems bleeding is fairly common so I am just holding onto hope at the moment!

I am 7 weeks and have had 2 scans already due to bleeding. First one we thought we were 6 weeks but found out we were only 5, then rescanned a week later and could see a heartbeat through an abdomal ultrasound. I'm being rescanned again on Monday at almost 8 weeks.

I self referred to our EPU because of previous miscarriages and the GP referred me for next weeks scan.

yes badleg same here, searching and searching for info, im pretty sure my bleeding pattern fits with cervical erosion and i have in the past been disgnosed with that. my mum even bled through her pregnancy with me....so all these things i am piling up but until i see a scan.......! snowberry, i think 7 weeks is a better time to clearly see heartbeat etc. so it looks like a self referral is the way forwards...!

Good luck ladies. Unfortunately all you can do is wait and see. Its been the longest wait of my life so far. I'm now 13w 4d and feeling more relaxed but still have those niggly fears in the back of my mind. Early scans are great for reassurance and keeping you sane.

I bled on and off for the first few weeks but it has stopped now. Can't wait to see my little bean again on Monday.

My GP has been really supportive as she knows how anxious I am after the last 2 miscarriages which has been really helpful as I do feel like I'm making a bit of a fuss.

I am paying for a scan at 7 weeks unless the GP refers me to the EPU.

Thinking of you all! We are meant to enjoy it but it's far from enjoyable. That initial high of a positive especially if you have had previous issues is quickly dampened. I just do t know what to do for the best!

Should I be resting or can I go about my life as normal??

I didn't have to self-refer in the end because my GP referred me... but I still had to chase them up for an appointment - when they called, they nonchalantly said "Oh yes, we've got your referral here, I guess we should see you....". But in the internet it said that they do accept self-referral.
When I was there though, they were great. It was discovered that all was well - and I hope it goes the same way for you, OP! - but that I was four weeks further along than I thought... my last period was probably an implantation bleed! So they took my bloods right away so that they are ready for the 12 week scan, booked the date for 12 week scan etc....
