Craving sponge

When I was a child I secretly chewed sponges. I never ate them but it was close!

I'm now absolutely CRAVING a sponge chew. I'm 37 weeks and cannot stop thinking about stuffing a sponge in my gob. I haven't got any in the house but I think I'll probably end up eating them if I got hold of some.

Has anyone else had a sponge craving and satisfied it with something else normal????

hahahaha!! Not yet, but then I am 30 weeks so maybe it's yet to come - but I LOVED chewing sponges as a child, especially sucking bathwater through them, my sister and i were crazy for doing this!

I craved talc with DD1! Never heard of anyone else doing it - sure it was some kind of deficiency I had.

I craved sponges when I was pregnant with DS. I would chew on pieces of it but not actually eat it or I'd have to stand around and smell them.
I still love the smell of new sponges now, if I get a new one out to do the dishes I have to stand and smell it for 5 minutes first.

Haha yes I craved sponge so bad during my pregnancy. I used to eat it as a child although I don't think we'll I hope I didn't actually swallow it!

When pregnant I used to buy sponges and rip them up the sound of the sponge tearing was amazing. The taste of dry sponge on my tongue was indescribable although I never did actually eat it!

My mouth is watering at the min just thinking about it...

Isn't it linked to iron deficiency? It's called Pica I think.

Absolutely no advice (you are a right bunch of wierdos Wink), but just wanted to pop on and let you know that I found this all highly entertaining. Thanks.

Was just going to ask if you've been tested for anaemia as well, as it can cause cravings for non food things that are more about the texture, pica as pp said. I am slightly anaemic and craving crunchy things, luckily edible such as raw carrots and underripe nectarines.

Not had this but remember vaguely from a uni lecture this is linked to calcium deficiency/craving... Might go away if you eat some calcium rich foods?

I would mention it to your midwife just incase it is linked to some deficiency

OMG! I have never come across anyone else that has craved sponges in pregnancy! I thought I was totally on my own, haha! With DS2 it was all I could think about - for my birthday, my husband wrapped me one up in ribbon as a joke! I would get in the bath and chew it, and always had to have Neals Yard bubble bath for mums to be. I knew it was totally weird yet couldn't stop Blush. Am now pregnancy with DC3 and don't have any cravings at all!
Never got to the bottom of why!!

No advice from me....but now I'm wondering if, when upduffed, I'll be going back to drinking malt vinegar from the bottle which was my weird childhood habit!

I used to eat sponges for years, then the cravings went away suddenly, reappearing in each pregnancy. I used to actually eat them. No idea what the hell deficiency would cause that craving, but I assumed it was something hormonal, as it was at its worst in both adolescence and pregnancy

It is called pica. Very common. I wanted to drink fabric conditioner but my iron levels were on top form so no idea why I felt the need.

I can appreciate the need for a sponge OP so you enjoy them when they arrive tomorrow!!

I loved chewing sponges as a child. Totally forgot until you mentioned it and now I want one.
I craved gravel and cement. I remember walking past a building site and wanting to stuff cement dust into my mouth. Did occasionally suck on sterilised gravel but never swallowed it.

Glad you enjoyed your sponge op part of me wants to grab one and try it to see if it's still as satisfying outside of pregnancy.

Ps I didn't have a very bad iron deficiency during pregnancy no idea if it was related to the craving as I never told any one in a professional capacity incase they thought I was crazy

Im 6 months preganant with my 3rd child and for the past 2 n half mnths, I have had a craving of chewing washed fabric, especially when im doing laundry or watching tv. I just love the smell and feel of it in my teeth/ mouth and the taste. It has got so bad that I found an old pair of my sons pj bottoms, cut them up into squares and I keep them in a food bag so when I get the urge, its right there in my bedside drawer. If I go out, I put a few pieces in my pocket or in my bra. Does anyone else do this?? 🙈😁
