Ultrasound: abdominal at 6.2 weeks, no embryo! Should I worry?

Hello, I had an abdominal u/s on the 15th of Feb, at 6 weeks and 2 days, according to my LMP, 2nd Jan, and the scan confirmed it, the doctor said she saw an empty sac and said I should be prepared for this to a blighted ovum, but she recommended another scan on the 7th of March to check again. I'm 32 and this is my first pregnancy. I'm very worried! Any suggestions or advice? Thanks, I'm new to this forum! Xx

At that early stage of pregnancy the scan should have been vaginal.

At 6+2 there is a chance that the contents of the sac weren't visible through the tummy but would have been if she did an appropriate scan.

Hold tight and see what next week brings.

For what it's worth I was scanned at 7weeks through tummy. Couldn't see anything. Then she did it vaginally. Baby seen clearly. Good luck.

Agree with pp. i would have thought very unlikely to see anything with this type of scan. When I have had early scans, they have always tried abdominally, but had to revert to vaginal. Fingers crossed for yoh.

I agree with the other posts. 6+2 is very early to see anything via trams-abdominal US . I've had lots of early scans over the last 2 years because of recurrent miscarriage history - The nhs have always tried abdominal US first, then got me to have a wee and done a vaginal scan. My last pregnancy they saw the sac through abdominal scan at 5+4 then did the vaginal scan and saw the heartbeat! I'm surprised they didn't offer you this option.
My private specialist doesn't even bother with a abdominal scan until 10weeks. Straight in with dildo cam!
I have had a blighted ovum before so I hope that this isn't the case for you, good luck.

I had a scan at 8+5 and that was trans vaginal. The sonographer said she wouldn't get a clear picture abdominally. (I'm fairly slim too)

I had another at 10 weeks at fmc (so high end scanning equipment) that was trans abdominal.

I'm surprised they didn't do a vaginal scan.

I've rescheduled for the 2nd, and very anxious at the moment. Should I have any symptoms of it's actually a case of blighted ovum. I have no regular pregnancy symptoms and neither pain nor bleeding. I just feel positive but also feel like I should be prepared for the worst! Any advice?

I had a blighted ovum last year discovered at an 8 week scan and had incredibly strong pregnancy symptoms. Was vomiting a few times a day. When I was pregnant with my son I had no symptoms at all so it really isn't an indicator.

The wait between scans is dreadful and I hope the 2nd March hurries up for you.

Hopefully it will be good news, an abdominal scan wouldn't have shown much at 6 weeks. I had a scan at 7 weeks abdominally in my current pregnancy and although they picked up a heartbeat which was the main thing you really couldn't see much else identifiable.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you Thanks

It's in two days! I'm so nervous. Still no symptoms either! Not sure what I'm expecting to hear.. I'm currently living far away from home, in Thailand, and my tickets are booked to visit family on the 9th in Switzerland and India.. I'm so anxious about having to travel with bad news!! Fingers crossed.

Don't panic. 6+2 would be early to see a heartbeat with an abdominal scan.

Poor you. I know how nerve-racking this is Brew

Thank you! Unfortunately, they didn't see a yolk sac either at the last scan! Will see how this goes and update! Xx
