what happens at your first midwife appointment?

I'm pregnant with my first baby. I rang up and booked an appointment to see a midwife. They said midwife would only see me when I'm 8 weeks so it's booked in for mid Feb.

They said first appointment with midwife lasts for 45mins and every one thereafter is 15 mins.

What happens during those 45 mins? Do they take your blood?

Also does the midwife schedule you for a scan? If so, do you have to have chosen the hospital you want to give birth in by then?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm a complete novice!!

Xx

Congratulations! They take blood and urine samples. Go through you and your partners medical history. Explain what happens at the rest of the appointments. They tested my breath for Carbon monoxide as well. It's very long but extremely important.

Just wanted to add our midwife booked our 12 week scan at our appointment but it's different in different areas. It might be worth thinking about hospitals if you've got a choice.

Thanks both! Are you meant to go on your own, or with your DP? X

Yeah sorry, my midwife made the referral to the hospital when I was there and said I would get a letter in the post with my scan appointment, which arrived a week later. My OH came with me. It was useful having him there for his and his family medical history but each to their own, DP don't have to be there. This is our first so I think he just wanted to feel involved!

My dh went too - was quite useful for his family medical history but a bit boring tbh (lots of form filing in) if works a problem prioritise the scans for him to attend.
