Weight gain

Hi everyone. I'm a bit worried I'm putting on too much weight. I was previously very overweight ~5 years ago but got down to a health weight before conceiving.

Can I ask

  • how much weight did you put on from conception to full term
  • was it evenly spread throughout the weeks? To what extent does it ramp up at the end?
  • how much weight did you lose immediately through birth?

For someone who is 5ft2 and started at 140lbs, what is a good range to aim for?

Not too helpful but at 33 weeks I have put on 2.5stone. This is too much and I still have ages left!

At a guess I think a normal amount for you (based on what I should have put on and I initially weighed more than you) would be up to 25lbs?
Someone else may be better to answer for you though

I put on 5 stone with DD (eating far too much of the wrong thibgs), so far at 20 weeks with DC2 I've put on 1st 5lb, which I'm much happier with. If you have a healthy bmi at conception then i think the nhs says 2 stone ish, with most gain after 20 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as youre eating healthily, not overeating or eating too much rubbish.

Hi OP, I think it's totally understandable that you've got these concerns, especially since you're someone who has worked very hard to lose weight in the past. The truth is, everyone's body is different and deals with pregnancy differently, so the main thing to focus on is that you're eating the recommended amount of food. For someone starting pregnancy at a healthy weight, the recommended weight gain is between 25 and 35 pounds.

I was so worried in my last pregnancy because I gained about 10lbs in the first trimester and they say you should be gaining no more than 5 with most people only gaining 2-3. In the end, I gained just over 2stone (well within the recommended amount) because for some reason my weight gain stopped at 34 weeks.

With regards to the weight loss, I only lost about 9.5 lbs in hospital, but DD was only 6lbs. I think most people lose more than that. The weight steadily came off and I was back to my weight in around 8 weeks. I didn't diet as such but I breastfed and made sure I didn't over indulge. Just like I did in pregnancy.

Hope this helps. It's worth noting that some people gain a lot of water weight which comes off almost straight away once the baby is born so don't get too hung up on what the scales say 😃 x

Thanks for the comments. I realise every person and every pregnancy is different but it is helpful to know other people's experiences. I'm trying to be sensible and I'm eating lots of good food but also lots of bad food too... which makes me want to keep an eye on my habits and not let myself get out of control. I ate loads of sugary things yesterday I think just to get the taste of acid reflux out of my mouth! :(

I've gained 17lbs so far at 23 weeks. It seems like a lot to me...

At least I know I am capable of sticking to a weight loss regime if I have a lot of lose afterwards!

I gained 25 lb in total - appetite definitely decreased towards the end as my stomach got squashed. Happily it turned out it was all water weight (well I assume it was as it came off within 10 days)
