I have a job interview in a few weeks and looking to confirm with you guys whether I tell at interview that I'm pregnant or wait to see if I get the job. Can they retract a job offer after finding out this information? Feeling very anxious

You should just go for the interview as normal and certainly do not volunteer the information.

Congratulations. Smile

It depends if you want the job. You 100% won't get it if you tell them.

I applied before I was pregnant and wouldn't feel comfortable putting a company in this situation normally however I am not having any career progression in my current role and feel this is benificial for my future and for the baby

I'd say don't volunteer the information (you don't have to) during the interview but be fair and let them know soon after signing if you do get the job.

I'm currently in a similar situation but as the hiring manager. My report only got pregnant after we took her on but was TTC at the time of her application. I'm happy for her and like her, but TBH was slightly taken aback as we'd made it abundantly clear during the application process that the position would require a high level of commitment for the first two years and we were specifically looking for candidates who would want to stay for at least that long. Her CV is great so I could have easily staffed her on a more short term project than the one she's on now!

Meant to add: me being taken aback is not due to her falling pregnant but because she was adamant she'd commit for the named period but then announcing she'd been TTC for months five weeks later.

If you tell them you will not get it.

Fwiw people accept job offers all the time and then 'suddenly' find out they are pregnant.

There not legally allowed to ask you and you're under no obligation to tell them. If let them know shortly after they offer you the job. Good luck!

Although what will happen with maternity pay? Presumably you won't be entitled to anything from your new company if you get it?

Yeah I think that's right- don't you have to work for somewhere for 6 months before they will pay maternity pay?

This is a really important point to factor in! I'm confident you won't be entitled to maternity pay if you get the new job! Instead, you will qualify for maternity allowance from the government which will only pay you around £140 a week! If this is going to cause you a major issue financially, I would suggest staying with your current employer! Hope this helps.x

The only reason I know this is because I started a new job the same week I fell pregnant with my DD and I wasn't entitled to maternity pay. Had to claim maternity allowance through the government which left me much worse off.x

Sunshine511 thank you for this, my existing role only offer statutory anyway so I wouldn't be any worse off to be honest!

In a way, I suppose it's (sort of) a good thing that they'll only give you SMP. Means you won't feel like you need to stay and miss out on this opportunity that has come up!!! Wishing you lots of luck with your interview Smile

Whether they pay you maternity pay or not depends on the company. After two losses I needed a change of scene and applied for other jobs, not expecting to get pregnant again for a while then of course I found out just after they'd issued the contract. I had a conversation with HR and amazingly there isn't any qualifying period for mat pay which sealed the deal and I let my new boss know out of courtesy. I think it's important to ensure you are with the right company for your future- you won't be on mat leave forever! Also pretty sure that an offer can't be withdrawn once it's made if you told them you are pregnant as it could constitute discrimination.
