Nursing chair or not? Baby upstairs we are down..

What are everyone's thoughts on nursing chairs? Baby's nursery is upstairs while our bedroom is downstairs. This makes me swau towards purchasing one incase baby moves to cot pretty quickly and saves me carrying him / her in the night down to our bed or sofa? Had baby been on our floor j wouldn't bother. Also our stairs are quite steep with a turn.

Unless it's a chair you will want to keep using, no.
Also, baby should be in your room for 6 months.

The guidelines state the baby should sleep in the same room as you for 6 months so I would see how you go and get one if you need it. While our daughter was in our room I just sat up in bed and fed her there.

I would buy the cheap ikea chair. DD2 had just started to sleep through without a feed at 13mo. DD1 did that at 15mo.

Not every baby can go through the night without a feed by 6mo.

I was given a 'nursing' chair. But it's shit for breast feeding in as the arms are high and it's quite narrow so my baby pushes her legs against the arms and ends up wrestling around. Ours rocks too but it sends me either to sleep or makes me queasy. My DH used it for watching TV from.

Just use any arm chair if you still bf at that point.

I normally fed on the bed anyway as baby in with us til six months.

Who knows you might find you don't bf that long or you mix feed or give bottles. I'd not bother getting one of those nursing chairs whatever you do though.

DS is 15 months and I haven't breast fed him or fed him at all in the night since he was about 9 months. However, I still use the chair all the time. I give him his night time bottle in it, I use it if he wakes in the night for a cuddle to comfort him. And any other reason I need to sit down when I'm in his room. It's the IKEA one though, not a specific nursing chair.

I intended to bf, but my milk never came in properly and I couldn't do it. I'd have been gutted if i'd have forked out a fortune for a nursing chair. Wait and see how you get on.

I wouldn't bother for now. See if you're still breastfeeding at night by the time the baby goes into their own room.

Even if you are, you may not want the chair anyway - I was always more comfortable feeding DS while lying on the floor or a bed at that point. Once we'd cracked lying-down feeding it was definitely the best approach at night.
Much more comfy than being crammed into a chair - 6-mo-o babies are quite long!

Also, anything could happen before then. You may decide to cosleep. You may go onto formula. The baby might sleep through. Definitely don't waste your money now.

We got this on the basis that it would be nice for curling up for bedtime stories and then useable wherever even if feeding didn't work out. It has been a godsend. I couldn't get comfy feeding in bed so ever since dd was tiny I brought her into nursery to feed and back in cot in our room after. The arms are low enough it still works for BF at nearly 20 months. She can now climb up and sit in it and loves to do so.

Even if you end up bottle feeding you'll still need somewhere comfy to sit while doing it.

I probably won't buy one. My lovely mil let me borrow her Ercol rocking chair. I breast fed both boys. Was the most comfy'ist chair I've ever sat in.

Thank you so much ladies inappropriate every reply. I agree that even if I don't manage to BF I'll still need somewhere to feed if night feeding past 6 months (is it terrible that my mother out me into my room at 6 weeks??!!) I'm inclined to get a cheap IKEA seat or hold off until I see how things go! Probably will hold off as we are ordering a snuzpod crib so hoping baby won't outgrow this for a few months!

You'd put a baby on a different floor to you? That's really sad for the baby.

KLG3101 · 27/10/2015 21:40

Tiggery - yes from 6 months onwards. Do you put your baby down at night in their cot them go downstairs to your lounge / kitchen for the evening leaving baby upstairs? Presuming you have a staircase? Most families do!

My 'babies' are much older. A few hours is one thing, all night though? Seems pretty cold to me.

Unfortunately I have no option Smile

No when they where little they stayed downstairs with its until we went to bed. Easier for the all evening cluster feeding in the early weeks so you don't have to be up and down the stairs all the time.

I'm not sure that having a baby on a different floor is that different from having a baby in a different room across a landing Tigger. I'm presuming a monitor would be used. And the OP is talking about after 6 months now.

Of course, in the midst of interrupted sleeps, it may be more challenging to have the baby on a different floor. I'd be wary about falling down the stairs when sleep deprived. We are sleeping in a smaller room at present so that we're on the same floor as our toddler (baby in with us) but that is for practical reasons.

It's falling down the stairs when sleep deprived that worries me, which is why I'll be keeping the baby in with me til she stops feeding at night. Prob 12-15 months if DS is anything to go by.

We also have a v small house, with the children's room on a different floor to ours.

When I was feeding DS I was so wrecked in the night I definitely couldn't have negotiated our steep attic stairs, with a bend in them. Certainly not while carrying him, either. Think it's easier all round - in my case - to have the baby in with me til night feeds are gone.

Your baby will probably want to feed most of the night, at least for the first few months (they boost your supply at night). So you might find that he/she ends up with you at night, perhaps in your bed or at least next to it.

Keep an eye out for a second hand nursing chair on local Facebook selling sites. You might find a bargain like we did. I've had a lot of use out of ours over the last 2.5 years.

Once the baby sleeps through the night I'm sure being on a different floor will be ok, with a monitor. My "baby" started sleeping through at 3, however, so that would have been a long few years of sleepy trips up and down stairs.. You need to play it by ear, definitely not on a separate floor before 6 months though (and in your OP it wasn't at all clear you meant you wouldn't do that, to be fair to posters who have commented on it)

I've bought a 2nd hand Kub nursing chair from my colleague for £60

Would never have forked out the £200 for it - hopefully I 'll get some use out of it
