baby movements - kicking like a beating heart???

is this normal?
my baby movements have felt fairly normal up to about wk30, but in the last 3 wks there have been a few times where she's had bouts of moving the same part of her like she's kicking/punching/shaking her head to the beat of a drum.
It just feels really weird as it's so uniform and repetitive - any ideas anyone?
I don't want any extra monitoring that involves a Doppler, poor baby has been scanned so many extra times because of all the risk boxes I only just tick. Thanks in advance xxx

Could it be hiccups? DD had it a lot towards the end, and then had them a lot when she was born too. The midwives said it was a sign of strong lungs, but they tell you a lot of bullshit in my experience so I don't know how true it is.

I was going to say hiccups too. I thought it was kicking until the midwife said aww he has the hiccups

Definitely the hiccups! Baby is just getting a bit of diaphragm exercise in. Smile

I was told it could be baby practicing breathing

Definitely sounds like hiccups. My DS got them every night for a couple of weeks around 30ish weeks.

I thought hiccups when I read the title - they can feel rather violent!

Hiccups! They're not counted as movements

I wonder this a lot. It seems too quick for hiccups but I guess you all know.

Interesting that they are not counted as movements. Can anyone explain why?

They're quick, I think, because they're just little diaphragm spasms, there's no air going into their teeny little lungs.

Maybe they're not counted because they're reflex rather than voluntary? I'm assured they're not uncomfortable or anything.

I loved the hiccups. Just a deep, rhythmic drum beat. It was quite relaxing.

I used to get this too, weirdly from only one of my twins. Felt like a little drum going on. Mine started at 22 weeks though - don't know if that could be hiccups?

thank you mumsnet! I've got so much on that I couldn't think thru this logically enough to realise that it's probably hiccups.
Mind you, neither did the midwife who kept me in hospital for over and hour after I reported this symptom.
And yes, it's definitely important to remember that hiccups don't count as movement.
Good old mumsnet xxxxx
