A cautionary tale of gender and pre arrival purchasing....

.... On my local fb sellers group has this afternoon appeared a whole load of gender specific brand new baby stuff, because the mother was told girl and a boy has arrived...
Sadly she has done the usual pre wash and can't return and won't use pink for a boy but thought I'd share in case anyone else was stock piling too high on specific shades...

I got the right gender but the wrong weight! All the diddy newborn stuff I had lovingly washed, packed and taken to the hospital had to be side lined and sent DH to mothercare to buy something in the next size up! DS was 10 lbs and really long!

Things that this do happen I've payed for 2 private genders and been told twice by two different sonographers at 20 weeks and 25 that I'm having a girl and all different people each time so I'm assuming that's a good sign. She better be a girl lol I think I will cry her lovely purple room x

Depends how many scans you're having really. If you're using a private doctor or not in the UK/on NHS likely you're having more frequent scans. I'd be shocked if a baby who appeared to be a girl at 20, and then 28, and then 32 weeks on ultrasound was born a boy.

This was my biggest fear when I was pregnant, especially after painting the nursery. Although, I was told boy, it's pretty hard to get it wrong that way round I guess. I had 2 late scans and asked the sonographer to double check on both of those, and still panicked when he was born and checked straight away.

fan I had the opposite of that, I was told DS would be huge (hence the late scans) so bypassed the teeny stuff, but he was born early and relatively small so I had to go and buy a load of first size stuff after he was born.

hee hee hee. I had a surprise with all four (as in we didn't want to know). Friends thought we were insane but maggie-suits are very neutral anyway.

With DS2 the sonographer said "there's a definite scrotum" when I asked if she was sure! Grin As for buying clothes, it wouldn't have been a problem, everything seemed to be white where I shopped. Sad I also bought the wrong size, he was 9 lb 12 oz! Also his birthday's in August, we had a heatwave that October, so I was still trying to squeeze him into tiny playsuits because the shops just had winter stuff!

We'll. We've seen his penis and scrotum a fair few times by now including on a 4D scan, so...........

So bizarre that this thread appeared today., I had a growth scan yesterday and the midwife asked me if I knew the sex of the baby. I told her it was a boy, then it crossed my mind that what if it was actually a girl and the midwife was hinting at something! I asked her to double check and she showed me a penis! Haha. Wouldn't have mattered other than I would have needed a dash to the shops because I've hardly bought a thing because got lots of clothes that were DS1'S! Grin

I was told my first was a girl however when I gave birth he was most definitely a boy. I did only buy gender neutral clothes but I was given loads of pink which I had to give away.

Oh god, I can't believe this thread popped up. I literally just woke from dreaming my dd was born but was a boy and sonographer got it wrong.
I'm not going to buy too much and have all of ds' stuff still. Worried now as 20 week scan was my last one!

Or it's just a good way to sell stuff as being new when it isn't!
If a boy pops out he won't hate his purple bedroom you know.

Just get neutral colours :) and newborn clothes unless you have a prem don't last very long in my experience!

I've got a friend who was told boy and had a girl so it can happen both ways. I've seen my baby's scrotum on a few scans now so I'm as sure as I can be that he's a boy. That said I really wouldn't have an issue with putting anything I've bought on either sex.

Where I work we did an audit and had a 100% accuracy rate (NHS) however I also work for a 4d company and they do sexing scans at 16 weeks, these are often wrong as not clearly seen, and it's always the larger ladies who want this scan which in turn makes it harder to see!! I always inwardly sign when they walk in room (I'm a larger lady myself so not discriminating!!)

This happened to someone I know. Was told a girl the whole way through and out popped a boy!!!

Report
WiIdfire · 02/09/2015 07:19

This why I didnt find out with mine. Not because I'm fussed about putting a boy in pink but because I would think it hard to get your head around one sex if you'd been told
It was the other.

I also had size issues. Neither newborn nor 0-1 month stuff was any good for my 11lb2 baby. Was very sad to put it all away straight away.

I don't understand why some people love to dress their babies all in pink, or all blue. There are so many nice colours you can use (if you can find them), h&m do lots of nice greens and yellows in small baby clothes. Yes they are a girl or boy, but why the need to make the statement about it so early in life. I know it is personal preference and it makes it easier for others to know whether you have a boy or girl, but why would strangers need to know that anyway.... Unless I am missing something

aimees75 Sometimes (in my case at least) if you tell relatives or friends the gender they will buy gendered items. I prefer neutral stuff so it can be reused and more versatile. The biggest culprit is my MIL and we weren't going to lie to her about not knowing the gender. So now stuck with "Daddy's Little Princess" onesies...sigh.

I was mindful of this when I had a scan. So when the sonographer said it's a girl, I said "are you sure?". He then took the time to focus on her genitals and said "look, those three lines on the scan are definitely girls bits, I'm 100% sure"

I'm glad I asked and that he obliged, and that DD was helpfully in a good position! I really wanted a girl second time round and had I not asked i'm sure I would have spent the rest if the pregnancy thinking "what if they just missed the willy"?

Hardly any of DS's clothes are blue. In fact he has a couple of pink t shirts now. But they are boys clothes. I know that doesn't really apply to newborn stuff, but my point is that it isn't just about pink vs blue.

I painted DS's bedroom blue while we were expecting him, and worried what I would do if he turned out to be a girl but when I look at it now I think it's fine, it's a duck egg blue and quite gender neutral. If no2 is a girl I wouldn't repaint.

Are you meant to was new baby clothes? It may be really dumb to ask but this will be my first. I always thought you would just stick the baby in it after taking labels off?

sepa You need to wash them. All of the labels on the items I've bought say to wash before use as well. So make time in advance!

This has just happened to a woman at work. She was told she was having a girl at her 20 week scan. She had a baby shower where her friends and family gave her oodles of pink baby clothes and girly gifts. One of her gifts was a 3D scan, during which they told her she was actually having a boy!

Eminybob 'this was my biggest fear when I was pregnant'. Hmm
