Pregnancy

Sickness at 36 weeks

I'm 36 weeks exactly tomorrow. This is the first pregnancy that I've ever had go beyond the first few weeks.

I didn't get any sickness early on in my pregnancy, a little nausea which lasted two weeks at the most. But nothing to complain about!

But, recently (since about 30 weeks) I've been getting horrible heartburn. I've been using gaviscon and recently started on ranitidine.

I'm sick in the night at least three times a week. It's horrible. I sleep with a sick bowl next to me - just in case. I have to use three pillows to prop myself up, and sometimes the only way to feel comfortable is by sitting bolt upright rather than lying down. I wake up frequently (but need the loo frequently so it's that as well as discomfort)

I've been putting it down to eating too much or too late (my bump is big as my baby is measuring large and I have excess fluid) but I wonder if it's something more serious? Do you think the baby is ok? I can't believe it's not getting enough nutrients as it's massive but I'm no expert.

I've told the obstetrician and GP when I got the ranitidine prescription and neither seemed overly concerned. I don't want to take too many drugs though as they're not tested during pregnancy. But I do understand that the risks are low.

Is it normal to be sick so often? Should I be more concerned?

I have a scan a week on Tuesday to check the baby's growth and the obstetrician wants to discuss delivery options with me. I'm assuming this will mean induction or c-section but I don't really know! Does anyone have experience with this?

The acid, which is likely being pushed up into your diaphragm by the baby, will be irritating your stomach and causing the sickness. This is perfectly normal and will likely continue until you give birth so your only choice is to neutralise the acid as much as possible.

If ranitidine doesn't work then you could ask for a prescription of omeprazol (I think that's what it's called) I had it in my last pregnancy and it worked fairly well.

Cutting out acidy foods/drinks from your diet might help. As will sitting upright for an hour after eating. Not eating and drinking at the same time and instead only sipping water once you have finished your meal is supposed to help but I've never been able to do that myself. I have to have a drink with my food.

That's all i can think of at the minute.

Heartburn and the associated nausea/sickness that comes with it is horrid so you have my sympathies. I hope you can find some relief soon.

I had bad sickness until about 24 weeks. It came back around 34 weeks just being sick every now and then but without nausea. Just spontaneous vomiting. Told doctor and midwife and they said being sick in late pregnancy is common and not to worry. I think you only need to worry if you have fever or abdominal pain or can't keep anything down. Try to keep hydrated. I sympathise though. :( let the pregnancy misery be over! Good luck x

Thank you... I'll ask about omeparazol.

I'm just so tired now. Got an exam in two weeks and can't concentrate on study at all.

I know I've had a relatively easy pregnancy but now I just want to meet my baby and stop feeling so rotten! My friend told me last night that the last month is the longest! grrrrrr!
