"About My Grandad" book

My father in law passed away recently and I am pregnant. My husband is coping quite well but seems to be very much "getting on with it" and isn't talking about his dad much now since the funeral is all done. I'm trying to find ways to bring up conversations about his dad to make it an open conversation and help him through his feelings, while also not pushing him or intentionally upsetting him.

So I had an idea about 3am this morning of him and I creating an "about my grandad" book for the baby with lots of photos, info, etc so he will grow up knowing about his grandad. I think it could work really well to help us talk about good times with his dad and because he will see it as something for baby rather than specifically for him

oops posted too soon!

it won't be under pressure.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if a book like this exists? There is this one - Dear Grandad, from you to me (Tree design) (Journal of a Lifetime) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1907048030/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_vDEZvbXETY879?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21
which looks lovely but is for the grandad themself to do. I'm looking for something similar but where we can write about him in the third person.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Its a lovely idea, and even if your dh isnt keen initially youve got plenty of time before birth.

You could use a photo book template on photobox or similar, and add in your own captions alongside a range of photos or images?

Good idea thank you, I'll have a look at that!

Another one recommending photo box, you can choose the number of pages and add pics, notes etc, we've done a couple and aside from it taking some time it's pretty reasonably costed too.

You've made me think, we're expecting our second and I'd love to have a family book for them both. Thank you!

Yeah, his passing was quite quick and it's made me realise the importance of getting all that info in people's heads written down so it's preserved somewhere if the worst is to happen.

Baby is due November so I think I am going to buy those "From You to Me" books which I linked in my OP as part of a Christmas present for all our close family to fill in for baby. They have ones for all different family members.

That's a really lovely idea. OHs gran passed away in May, he's been very good but it's really affected him so I might steal the idea if that's ok? We were lucky enough to be able to share our news with her.

I think this is lovely and hope you don't mind, but I might steal the idea too! My dad died two years ago, and the thought that my baby will grow up never really knowing much about him is depressing.

My paternal grandparents had both passed away by the time I was born so I never got to meet them. I don't really know much about them except my grandmother was a bit of a dragon and my grandfather liked ice cream! I want my little one to know much more than this about my wonderful daddy.

I was also thinking of something similar as we lost my mum a few years ago and it is heartbreaking that these people won't get to see the babies. It's a really lovely idea.

Apple do something similar - you upload the pics and text you want, and they send you a glossy hardback book.

Here's a link to the apple one:

Thank you for the second link, I'll look at that too. I was also toying with the idea of doing it myself with a scrapbook - cutting and sticking photos in it and handwriting messages. But I think the hardback ones would last longer.

Of course I don't mind if people use the idea! No need to ask.

I think it's a lovely idea. I'd go with somewhere online too as if worst comes to the worst and it gets damaged its easy to print another one off. Scrapbooks are lovely but I don't think all that time and effort would be appreciated by a little one. You'd probably end up putting it by for a while until they are a wee bit older, and less likely to tear pages and pull at it as wee ones are prone to do with books, which kind of defeats the point of doing it if they're not going to see it for a while.
