Failed 1hr gtt. Now a three day HIGH carb diet, then fast, then 3hr gtt? Anyone got any experience to share?

As my title says really, I'm 26wks. Had the 1hr gtt today (non-fasting, just turn up, down the glucose drink and have a blood test an hr later).

The hospital have now told me to eat a high carb diet for three days before an overnight fast (12 midnight to 7am) then bloods, more glucose drink and hourly bloods for three hours.

Does anyone have any experience of the tests or gestational diabetes to share?

Only from the lab side! They plot the results on a curve to get a more complete picture of how your blood sugar responds to a meal high in carbohydrate. It's just more informative that the one hour 'is it ok at time x' type tests. You can see if it drops slowly/quickly, delayed response etc.

I've run trials with seven samples on that curve before... Poor patients!

I'm waiting for the results of my 2hr GTT - bloods/urine at the start and then again after 2 hours. My doc recommends this as standard, I've previously gotten normal results with glucose dipsticks so hoping to get a normal one from this. I wasn't told to change my diet in any way in advance.

It was pretty unpleasant only because of the fasting. By the time they took the blood at the end I was starving and feeling a bit sick from only having that glucose drink in my stomach. Pack a snack so you can eat as soon as you are finished.

I passed me 28 week gtt, but had to have another at 34 weeks and was then diagnosed with GD.

The test itself, although annoying, is quite a good way for them to track how your body is processing glucose.
I was never told to eat a high carb diet before though Confused either with this pregnancy or the last.

Being diagnosed so late has left me having had just one appointment at the ante natal diabetes clinic at the hospital (which was very informative and very helpful). But it means that I have no help with my gd/medication/diet, or any advice for keeping bloods under control when in labour, as I'm being induced Friday.

From reading through on here, everyone's gd seems to be very different.

I'm being induced between 38 and 39 weeks because of the gd. From what I've read on various sites, it's because, gd increases the chance of stillbirth after 39 weeks, whereas a normal pregnancy the chances rise after 42 weeks.

I hope yours comes back clear, but if not then I hope the medical staff are helpful for managing gd Smile Good luck!

Thanks all.

Skipton - 7 samples! Shock Ouch! That's a very long and hungry day! I hope I won't need that many. We will see.

I'm a bit worried that even if I pass the 3hr test, the first result still suggests there's something wrong. And I hadn't even thought about managing blood levels in labour Hmm

I think where I am (USA), they like to induce at 37weeks for gd and that just seems so early Hmm

I failed my one hour GTT and had to take the three hour. They didn't have me eat any kind of special diet beforehand, though, just had me fast before the test.

The test itself wasn't fun- lots of sitting around in the waiting room, and lots of blood draws (I'm afraid of needles). I was pretty irritable by the end, too. But I passed the three hour GTT. From what I've heard, it's not that uncommon to fail the one hour and then pass the three hour.
