Present for friend in early pregnancy

Hi all,

My friend told me yesterday she's 7 weeks pregnant. Am thrilled for her as she's suffered three early miscarriages in the last few months. I really want to make her up a little basket of things to help ease nausea and things to pamper her with and cheer her up when she's feeling sicky and miserable.

So far I've ordered some extra strong mints, and some ginger chews for her to try and ease the nausea a little. Was going to buy some nice biscuits too as she's finding eating little and often helps. Also some bio oil to start running in early! Have you lovely people got other ideas of some things I could put in that you would have appreciated or found useful?

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received, many thanks!!

It's still early days though - are you sure she would want such a present?

I think in cases like these it is far better to ask them what they would like for a treat. They may surprise you!

I'm pretty sure she'd like it. I know it's early days but she's feeling really poorly and her husband is not being very helpful or supportive!

7 weeks is really far too early for a present, sorry. I and friends have all had miscarriages after 7 weeks. Be there for her and help as and when she does have nausea.

If her husband is such a nob now is she sure she is making the right decision anyway?!

She's sure, nobody else who knows her is. Her decision. I wasn't talking about buying her baby clothes or anything, just stuff to suck when she's feeling sick and maybe some nice bath stuff or something. Is it really too early to do something nice like that?

I think it's a lovely idea, chuck in some travel sickness wristbands too :)

Ooh how about some essential oils? I found burning lemon and ginger really eased my nausea

Actually I might chuck in the smallest socks you can fine. I carried some round with me in the early days and they helped remind me why I was feeling so ROugh!
Nail varnish for her toes because she won't be seeing them for a while??

Absolutely everything mentioned so far made me puke I have to say.

Chocolate, ironically, was the only substance I could eat when really bad. Liquorice all sorts were okay too

Some people like savoury things eg twiglets (didn't work for me but...)

They both sound great fugghet, thanks.

Am concerned now though, is it really too early? She lost the others very very early- 2 weeks ish- so this has progressed the furthest so far and she's feeling very rough. Just wanted to do something nice to her but don't want to overstep the mark.

I think it's a lovely idea. It is early, but I guess she wouldn't have told you if she wasn't comfortable.
What you've got already sounds great. Maybe decaf tea or some ginger tea? Or whatever she usually likes choc and biscuit wise

I'd say travel sickness bands and a watermelon - it was the only thing I could cope with eating.

I can't see why it would be a bad idea to get your friend these things to help her at the stage she's in.

If she does have a mc, will that make your present bad? I would've appreciated it.

Aww what a lovely idea. I have had miscarriages but something like this is so thoughtful I wouldn't have minded at all. What about:
Some posh ginger or peppermint tea bags
Something lovely to pamper herself with, like posh body wash or bath stuff
Yummy chocolates or gum sweets
Gaviscon!
Voucher for a pedicure, that she can use later when she can no longer reach her feet

I bought some cooling lavender gel to smear on my nose on the commute and that helps a lot.

I'd be inclined to go with a voucher for a beauty treatment that she could use now or keep till later when she's feeling a bit better. Certain smells/flavours/textures of food might not agree with her just now.

I do think your idea of a gift basket is lovely though but may be more appreciated later in pregnancy. One of the best presents I ever got was from my friend who gave me a gift bag of goodies when I was at the start of my third trimester with DD. It had cosy socks (so nice when I was in the postnatal ward after), a wee heart water bottle that I used throughout labour, some lovely bubble bath, candles and a wee exfoliating cloth, dry shampoo, body butter, lip balm and a huge big bar of chocolate. It was so thoughtful and such a lovely surprise at the time.

Thanks so much to all for your suggestions. I really feel this is the right time to buy her something as she's normally super healthy and confident and feeling this poorly has knocked her for six. I think once the worst is over she'll rally and won't need the support as much if that makes sense? She really is very down at the moment and I want to do something because I don't live very close and can't just pop in to make her a cuppa or take her dinner or whatever. So I'm going to risk it and hope that it's well received!

I think it's such a lovely thoughtful idea OP - I know everybody's different but things like black liquorice were a life saver for me & I found Anna's ginger thins amazing too although they were really hard to find - I bought boxes of them online. I don't leave the house without Rennies now either - never had reflux before but it hits me every day at tea time.

I've miscarried in the past & i would have really appreciated a goodie box like this. It'll be good for her to feel supported esp if her partner isn't stepping up.

Thanks so much. I thought I had said in my OP (so huge apologies for drip feeding, I should have re read it before now!) but I won't actually see her again now until she's about 11/12 weeks so if anything becomes inappropriate before then I will obviously leave it out!

How about some comfy pj's so she can lounge about in when she's under the weather

I'm 15 weeks at the moment and feeling really miserable I'm in a very happy marriage with a gorgeous toddler but pregnancy can make you feel c* sometimes! If someone was to give me a pampering gift I'd love some dried fruit and nuts ( chocolate is a bit too sweet for me at the moment ) but you can never go wrong with chocolate to put away for later! Some nail polish as doing your nails always makes you feel good and a couple of really mind numbing dvds that you can really chill while watching a good romantic comedy or whatever she likes to watch. I ha e no idea how much you want to spend but some bath smellies are fab as well dh bought me lavender bubble bath last time and it was wonderfully relaxing!
I think you sound like a lovely friend hope my ideas help you. And btw I don't think it's too early, early pregnancy time is a worrying time and I wouldn't put anything bany related in maybe even leave out the bio oil if she hasn't had a scan yet just go for general feel good stuff and I'm sure she'll appreciate you thinking of her

A Mexican bola necklace. Hangs down by the belly midriff and has a little chime.
