Tips to get this awful taste out of my mouth!?

I'm currently 15 weeks pregnant and have had awful sickness right from the start. It's nowhere near as bad as it was weeks ago. I was throwing up constantly, in bed all day but thankfully was prescribed some good anti-sickness meds. The nausea and vomiting eased and I'm no longer taking the medication, but these past couple of weeks I feel constantly sick! I'm not vomiting often, so grateful for that, but it it so debilitating. It seems to be this awful, disgusting taste that I have that's making me feel nauseous. Currently the only thing that I can do to take it away is eat. But within seconds of me not eating it's back. Getting through so many sweets and fizzy drinks as it's only strong sweet tasting things that I've found take it away, albeit temporarily. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can do to help? x

Yes I have this. I'm 35 weeks and although the sickness finally improved about 24 weeks the taste problem is still there. I find that sweet foods make it worse. Eating olives helps for a bit. But to be honest you sort of get used to it. You have my sympathy. I've also had a monstrous pregnancy and the only reassurance and certainty there is is that it's finite. The best advice I have for the taste is drink lots of water and try salty foods? Good luck. X

I constantly had a tin of little extra strong mints from m and s. Not too big or sugary as the usual ones which helped a lot. I also had a constant feeling of snot at the back of my throat for nine months too - they helped with that too!!!

Eurgh I have this too, I'm constantly paranoid about my breath too but I'm assured no-one can smell it, it's all mine - lucky me!
I find yoghurts take away the taste if you don't drink after it, I'm guessing it coats your mouth a bit
Also watermelon

I don't have a solution I'm afraid but I feel your pain. I'm 36+2 and have had this all the way through :(
I brush my teeth about 4 or 5 times a day, suck a lot of mints and chew gum... but it's still there.

You have my sympathies, sugar free chewing gum , fizzy water , tinned grapefruit and apples were my favourites. Giving birth cured it, but even the thought of eating onions still gives me the fear.

Also, it was worse when I exercised. Yuck.

I'm also suffering from this! Constant nausea and a bad taste after everything. I've been on anti sickness meds too and weaning myself off them this week has brought the nausea back, but no sickness thank goodness. I'm nearly 20 weeks. Hoping to read the magic cure here!

Hi everyone, I'm in the same boat, but I read about Bicarbonate of Soda and how you can make it into a mouthwash, and it helps neutralise the acid and the god awful taste in your mouth.

I mix a spoon full of bicarb in a cup of water, and then rinse out. Since then my mouth has been much better.

Hope it works for you all too x

Ooo I'm going to try some bicarb later Grin

Sounds like acid reflux. Gaviscon? Although tbh I find it only works for an hour or so. I think omeprazole is the only proper fix but you need to get a prescription for it.

Boiled sweets was the only thing that curbed the taste for me. (There were done alarmingly yellow Healthy Living lemon drops from Tesco that worked best) Thankfully it only lasted few days around 15 weeks and I'm hoping it doesn't come back.

I had this. It eventually cleared off after about 24 weeks (I was having acupuncture, but I'm reluctant to describe this as actually the solution tbh).
Lemon juice helped. And vinegar! Mm, vinegar on everything. And salty things. Nothing completely fixed it, but those things gave me at least a bit of time off. Sympathies! No fun.

Try juicy fruit chewing gum, I couldn't put anything minty in my mouth without throwing up but this stuff seemed to work to get rid of that awful taste and stop me being sick. Only whilst I was actually chewing it and only until the fruity taste had gone but any short reprieve was worth it.

If it's reflux then it's acid from your stomach coming up all the way into your throat. To do with the valves becoming weaker during pregnancy.

I have silent reflux (no heartburn just lots of mucus, a very tight throat and the nasty taste) I've had it on and off for over 20 years now. So medication wise PPIs are the usual prescription (didn't work for me though). The other recommendation is to use Gavisiscon advance after eating, it forms a barrier on top of the food, stopping the reflux coming up. It only works so long as the barrier is intact though, as soon as you eat or drink it stops being effective.

There are a few foods/drinks thought to weaken the LES/UES, including peppermint, so that may be a poor choice. Caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks and chocolate are also triggers for some people, along with spicy and fatty food. Being overweight or smoking are other risk factors. Oh and stress too (likely my trigger). Other management techniques are to eat smaller meals, not to lie down within a couple of hours of eating and raising your bed at the head end a few inches. Some people find drinking alkaline water helps. I'd suspect in pregnancy the trigger is most likely to be the growing baby squeezing your stomach and intestines.

I find ginger tea quite soothing.

I had it all through my pregnancy, mine wasn't acid reflux as you can feel the acid going up the oesophagis and this more a constant weird metallic taste but it was preferable to the actual morning sickness.

In silent reflux you don't have any heartburn (hence the 'silent') I don't really understand how that works, as obviously there is also acid in the esophagus but it is relatively common. Also known as LPR.

There are probably other reasons for nasty tastes in pregnancy though.

I really feel for you OP, I am PG with no.2 and have had exactly this both pregnancies. You will find the one thing that helps you. It's different for everyone. Worther's Originals helped me :-) The worst thing was drinking, I wanted to eat constantly but couldn't find anything I wanted to drink... Hang in there x
