Home birth - when to plan

I am hoping plan for a home birth, it is my first baby so I am aware it may not happen. I live 5 minutes from the maternity hospital so very close if plans need to change.

I am aware the home birth midwives are a separate team, I was wondering about when I would be out in touch with them? My next appointment is in a couple of weeks when I will be 27 weeks (a bit later than it should be as midwife away).

Just wondering what others experiences are, I'm guessing it might vary in different parts of the country.

I'm also pregnant with my first and planning a home birth. I told the midwife at my booking in appointment and she wrote it in my notes and said it wouldn't be a problem. I'm only 17 weeks so can't help with when to contact them.

In my area, it is the community mw that attend home births. So you may get your normal one, or one that is on call from across the area.

I've just been booked in for my third home birth (am 37 weeks) and labour quickly so have been told to contact them at the first sign of anything to give them a chance to get there! Depending on the situation/time of day etc I was given a few numbers but they will all have a briefing sheet available with my details on.

Congratulations!

I'm pregnant with my fifth but have never booked a home birth before, this is my first time. Hopefully someone will come along with a lot more info for you.

What I can tell you is that I'm 30 weeks at the moment and have an appointment at 34 for the midwife to come to my house and discuss all the home birth details with us. She does the referral to the home birth team for me. I've done lots of research already and have a basic idea of what I want and a plan b etc so maybe that's something to start thinking about now.

This is my first and I'm hoping for a home birth too. I think 32 - 36 weeks in when they really start the ball rolling, approve you for a definite home birth, usually come to your house to talk things over with you, make sure you're prepared, and find out where your house is so they're not driving around lost when you really need them! They will give you the contact number too so that when you go into labour you can call them.

I told my midwife at the start, it went in my notes, I got sent to a homebirthing class, and then at 36 weeks it was booked with the community midwife. It's my first as well, but they're absolutely happy for me to have a homebirth as everything is normal in my pregnancy. I live about 10 or 15 minutes from the hospital, so if things look like they're not going well I can transfer in easily.

In my area, you transfer to the home birth team at 37 weeks (their logic being if you go into labour before that they'll want you to go to the hospital). Here, they do monthly info seasons so you can go along and meet the midwifed and ask questions, maybe your area has something similar?

Info sessions, not seasons!
