maternity clothes at 17 weeks?

I seem to have expanded a lot this week, and today I can't do up my jeans. I'm only 17 weeks and had been expecting to be able to get away with normal clothes until about 20 weeks. Is this normal or am I just getting flabby?! I know I need to gain weight obviously, but I have a tendency to gain easily (previously 3 stone overweight) - worried as I don't want to risk gestational diabetes.

Sounds pretty normal to me. I think I was in maternity jeans from about 16 weeks onwards, but carried on wearing normal tops until 20 weeks or so. And as maternity jeans are so comfortable I was happy to make the move earlier (not sure now how I'm going to go back to regular jeans!).

Oh love, I was in maternity trousers at around 12 weeks - I got to the point where I couldn't stand the waistband of my normal trousers pressing in on me all day at work!

I felt enormous then. At 31+5 I now know what enormous is...!

If you need mat clothes, get them!

My bump is big (I have excess fluid) and had to have the gtt test to see if gd was a risk... everything came back normal.

It's different for everyone. I bought my first pair of maternity trousers at 8 weeks because the job I do means I do a lot of bending, lifting and carrying and the waistband of my normal trousers hurt too much when I bent down. I didn't move into maternity jeans until about 20 weeks and now at 27 weeks I'm mostly in maternity jeans plus two pairs of normal jeans that still fit. I have gained quite a lot of weight, more than the guidance, but you'd never know to look at me. No one can figure out where it's gone because my bump is a little smaller than average and I don't seem to have put any on elsewhere either.

I'd do your best to ignore the scales and concentrate more on eating healthily without denying yourself treats. When you've lost weight it's really easy to get hung up on putting it back on. I found it a real struggle until my bump popped because I just felt like everyone would think I was getting fat.

I bought my first maternity stuff at about 10 weeks - I think it was mainly bloat at that stage but I was about to do a drive to Germany and back so wanted comfort! I'd say by 16 weeks I was wearing them all the time!

I also found that my bump went through growth spurts. Sometimes it stays the same for a few weeks then all of a sudden in a week it seems to grow a lot!

Try to not worry, just eat healthily and enjoy it :)

Ive just bought my first pair of maternity jeans at 13 weeks. Not quite into them yet but jeans are pretty uncomfortable now so i think it will only be a few weeks longer. I think im still all about the bloat at this stage but 18-20 weeks doesnt sound early at all to me.

Sorry, just seen you're 17 weeks, again that doesnt sound early. Ive got a friend who is 21 weeks now and went into maternity jeans around 17 weeks.

Jeans were the first thing to go for me...around 15 weeks. I don't get on with maternity jeans so just been wearing leggings with dresses. 35weeks + 3 now and wearing a mix of maternity dresses and normal dresses in next size up. Looking forward to wearing jeans again after baby though!
Enjoy experimenting with what works for you! You'll be at your biggest in Autumn/Winter- you lucky thing!

Wow, wish I'd lasted that long. I'm only 11 weeks and suffering with terrible bloating. My jeans wouldn't do up from week 5 so I've been in maternity jeans and elastic waistbands since then. I'd been really concerned about it too, but people have been telling me that everyone grows differently and you just have to be comfortable!

First pregnancy, I went into maternity jeans at 15 weeks.
This time round, my Topshop high-waist skinnies wouldn't do up from 5 weeks. Now, at 13 weeks, I'm completely in mat clothes, aside from some old Topshop Baxters and some Gap jeans, which sit low enough to work ok.

It depends on each person. Both times I had no sign of a bump until 25 ish weeks. I only had a small bump as shown above at 40 weeks

I am firmly in mine now at 14 weeks, but still squeezing into normal clothes to go out in public as we haven't told people yet (complicated family politics) and I look about 5 months gone in mat clothes!

I was living in leggings/skirt and maxi dresses from 6 weeks as I couldn't stand the waistband of jeans against my stomach - it wasn't even too small particularly, just felt claustrophobic and made my sickness worse.

I never understand why people try to hold out against it, its so much more comfortable than regular clothes!!!

Not in maternity clothes yet at 18 wks but I've been wearing DHs pyjamas for at least a week as they're so much bigger & comfier in bed. Thought I'd bought maternity pyjamas yesterday but it was actually two nursing nighties - however they are a revelation! Bust support & no waistband! I was in heaven last night.

Everyone at work knows now, so I no longer need to worry about trying to hide it! I have bought some tunic tops which are loose (but not maternity ones) - the style makes my bump look even bigger, but I am starting to love my maternal shape!!!
