down syndrome test

I had the down syndrome test the other day and I have received the results but as I'm not at home for another 3 days I'm really worried about my results. My mum said all she can see through the window of the letter is 'why you need an ultra sound test'.

Can I phone my hospital and can they tell me the results over the phone? Or will I have to wait till I can open the letter?

zen1980 Thu 09-Jul-15 14:55:55

Can I ask why you wouldn't ask your mum to open it? I know that my hospital have to send the analysis off to another hospital and so they don't see the results for some time later x

She doesn't know I'm pregnant yet cause we're going to surprise her and my dad on their anniversary.

sarkymare Thu 09-Jul-15 15:10:55

I don't think it's going to be much of a surprise if she can actually see the words ultrasound scan on the letter.

Sorry clicked send too soon!

If you only had the test done a few days ago are you sure this letter even is the results from that? Could it not be your 20week scan date come through?

If it's going to worry you and you really don't want to tell your mum then I think calling the hospital is your only option. A

I had the test done nearly a week and half ago. Already had my ultra sound scan date for 20 weeks.

I've had a lot of ultra sound scans from stomach and gyno problems and she thinks it's that.

I don't think the recommended course of action if the results suggest you're high risk is a further ultrasound But not sure. I'd call the hospital and ask them to tell you.

sarkymare Thu 09-Jul-15 15:19:31

Oh I see. Are you going to call the hospital? If you are it might be worth having your notes to hand as you might have to tell them your NHS number.

I agree that you should call the hospital, but fwiw, I don't think they'd send you for an ultrasound unless you didn't have one at the same kind of time they did the blood test - when my friend was high risk, she was asked to come in to talk about the options, eg amnio/cvs.

good luck!

tinyme135 Thu 09-Jul-15 15:22:41

So the ultra sound part could be saying why I have had an ultra sound scan for and what it means.

Yeah I'm going to and ask for the screening department cause I know it's them who deals with it not maternity.

Just called hospital and they told me to call MW. I just tried calling her and she hasn't picked up. I'm at work so probably won't be able to answer. Looks like I'll have to wait till the weekend when I'm back home -.-

Tiny, if it's bad news they usually phone you rather than just send a letter. So based on that, let's hope it's okay.

tinyme135 Thu 09-Jul-15 15:54:05

Oh that's good. Can you tell tell I'm a first time mum haha. I'm worrying over everything. Been having nose bleeds and been worrying over that too haha

LittlePoot Thu 09-Jul-15 15:56:22

Edgar is right - my bad news came a day after my test and by phone so fingers crossed yours is good and you get hold of your mw soon. The waiting is a nightmare.

cookiefiend Thu 09-Jul-15 15:57:10

My MW said if the results were fine you would get a letter in a week or two and if there were any issues a midwife would call you to discuss further tests available. As far as I know one of the tests is not an ultrasound- they have done that bit for you already.

tinyme135 Thu 09-Jul-15 16:04:53

I just want to say thank you to all you lovely ladies. I kept saying I don't care if it's a high risk cause I'll still love the little one either way but I'm such a worrier and I'm bad at hiding it too.

soloula Thu 09-Jul-15 16:06:24

As far as the nosebleeds are concerned - don't worry about them. Just one of the (many) weird and wonderful things our bodies do when we're pregnant. Something to do with increased blood flow and pressure on the blood vessels in our nose. smile

Tiny, I had a phone call from the screening office on Tuesday asking me to come in & discuss my high results. I went in & they said I had a 1:25 chance of down's so they took more blood to send off for further analysis. This is fairly new I think, as it used to be only a cvs or amnio offered. They wouldn't offer an ultrasound as far as I know. However, they should have taken this extra blood sample at the time I had my general blood tests. If they had done that, the results would come by post without the initial result being mentioned, which is what may have happened with you. The midwife should have explained all this when she booked you in (mine didn't, hence the blood wasn't taken). This is only if you are high risk though. They don't do the further investigation if you are not because, I think it's along the lines of the Harmony test & pretty expensive. As it's new, every hospital is probably different though. I wouldn't be able to wait! I'd have to tell me mum & tell her to open it now!

tinyme135 Thu 09-Jul-15 16:15:09

I had blood tests done because I said yes to the scan but didn't get told how i would get the results if it was good bad and so on

tinyme135 Thu 09-Jul-15 16:23:38

Mw called back and said cause I haven't had a phone call everything is fine. Thank you for all your support ladies smile xx
