Hey guys.
I'm just after a bit of perspective and agree or disagreement.
I've been given a few things from my BIL and his wife.
Among the things is a car seat which they were also given. So I don't know really if its 3rd, 4th or 10th hand really.
My MIL brought the stuff over today and I basically just said thanks for all the stuff I just wasn't sure about the car seat, I would prefer to buy my own new as I know it'll be safe and not dropped etc.
MIL basically stuck her nose up and said me and my DH and being too "posh and becks" ?!
Erm.. We haven't bought a single item yet, we have a second hand pram, steriliser, 4 bags of used clothes and more more!
She did not agree and was implying I'm being ott.
Am I?? It's really annoyed me!! Maybe I am but it's my newborn safety equipment, I want to know it'll do its job properly! It's still sitting here Hmm

I got given one too but figured out it was probably over 5 years old which in many cases is the recommended limit due to plastic stress. Get a new one!

No way would I have used a second hand car seat, firstly because you need to be 100% sure it's not been in a crash and secondly because the boundaries of what's classed as safe can shift and the car seat may no longer be fit for use.

Does your dp agree and will back you up on this?

I accepted a second hand car seat and then worried about it so much I ended up getting a new one anyway. Don't worry what they think, just do what you think is best.

Thanks, I think it's really just common sense but i wanted your opinions too and also a rant.
I will be getting a new one, MIL is gonna p'sd off but I guess she just doesn't understand.

YANBU - if you don't know where it's been and what it's history is then it's not safe. To be fair to MIL though she's probably the generation that didn't even use car seats (I know I used to get flung into the back seat in a carry cot in the late 70s) so maybe she doesn't realise how it could be unsafe? She maybe just thinks as long as the baby is strapped in there's no issue?

Not 2nd hand: car seats and mattresses, everything else, fine.
