Early scan measuring 9 days behind ?

Hi all.
Hoping someone has had a similar experience and can tell me how this worked out for them...
I had a private early scan this morning - we saw heartbeat, baby and yolk sac all in the right place.
However, scan measurements put me at 7+1 when i am 100% sure that i am 8+3 as i was tracking periods. Sonographer just said 'oh, you're not as far along as you thought'. However, i am totally sure of my dates and i know exactly when i ovulated. I did ovulate late on day 17, but that still puts me 6 days behind even taking that into account. I also know that it can't be down to slow implantation because i got a faint bfp at 9dpo.
I am worried that baby is not growing properly and that this is going to result in miscarriage .
Has anyone had a similar experience ? How did it turn out for you?

Was it abdominal or internal? My first scan dated me a week behind and I was certain of my dates but it was abdominal. That was a private scan. I had one a few days later for spotting and that was internal and dated me correctly.

Yes I have and it did not turn out well. At 7+5 I measured 6+3. Absolute certainty of dates due to blood hcg of 45 at 10dpo. Went thru the same story of sonographer suggesting got dates wrong etc. had plenty of symptoms and then about a week later just stopped. Scan a few days after showed no growth since first scan and no longer had heartbeat. Not sure if you want to hear that but at the time found plenty of positive stories. I just wasn't one of them.

Scans are not perfect. There are many variables such as number of days for implantation to occur etc and they are based on average size plus the measurements are electronic and approximate. There is lots of room for error, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Just to add I'm now 18+5 and all is currently well.

it depends if it was external (v unreliable so early) or internal.

I had this and EPU were insistent I'd just OV'd v late but I knew I hadn't due to an early BFP on day 10 which would have been day 2 by their calculations and thus impossible.

It was pretty frustrating repeating this to them without them acknowledging it. (I learned later that they had been told if the PG has a heartbeat, do not be negative, hold out for a later scan showing development). At the time it made me feel I was going slightly mad..

Your BFP on day 9 does suggest the dates aren't lining up at this point, I hope it isn't the case but you asked for outcomes, and I found people fobbing me off much more damaging. Good luck

I've had this experience and unfortunately for me, it did not end well. My internal scan showed 5+6 when I should have been 6+4. I was rescanned a week later which showed growth and a heartbeat, but I unfortunately lost the baby a week later.

Early scans are very dodgy ground. There is every chance the sonographer got the measurements slightly out - even a mm at that stage can make a huge difference to dates and cause unnecessary worry. It's very tough and I really do sympathise Flowers There are so many ladies for whom these kind of stories have a happy ending - I have everything crossed for good news for you.

Have you got another follow up scan booked? Your EPU will probably see you if you explain what's happened and that you're concerned.

I measured 6+4 when I thought I was at least 7+1. By the time I had my 12 week scan I was measuring 13+2 which dates me exactly right and means I would have been 7+2 at my original scan.

Sonographer said the early scan date didn't mean too much & not to pay too much attention to it. The main thing is you saw a heartbeat! Congratulations.

It was an abdominal scan.
I did suspect that there would be storied with an unhappy outcome but I'd rather know if there is a chance things won't work out. I will call midwives on monday but cannot self refer to Epau so can only get a rescan if midwife agrees to send me.

Unfortunately it is one of those things that could go either way. We went for a private scan at 8 weeks, to be told it was only 6 weeks. The sonographer was blunt and said, "it's 50/50. This time next week there will still be a little heartbeat - or there won't." Then I had some bleeding 3 days later, so went to EPU. Baby was measuring 6+3 and there was still a heartbeat. Now 25+5 (albeit still a nervous wreck!

As PP's have said, measurements at that stage are tiny and even a fraction of a mm can make a difference.

The waiting to see what happens is awful and I feel for you. Fingers crossed tightly.

I'm going through this atm, I had a scan two weeks ago to show I was 5 weeks (thought I was 6 weeks) saw baby but no hb, they think my dates are wrong and I have a scan tomorrow to see if baby has grown. Apparently before 12 weeks scan growth can have a weeks difference. I hope you have a positive outcome Flowers

I just don't know what to think, its 4 weeks until my scan which a is a long time to have this worry hanging over me.

I just wanted to share my story with you. I had an early scan at what I thought was 7/8 weeks I think ans they could only see a gestational sac and a small yolk sac. I was terrified because I thought I knew my dates. They dated me at less than 6 weeks. I went back 6 days later and there was a little flump with a tiny heartbeat dating 6+6. Biggest relief of my life. Turns out, I probably ovulated much later than I thought because I had fairly recently come off the pill. It was probably my 4th month off the pill.

I'm now 26+2 and she's rolling around and kicking me to bits!

It's really important that you know that everything is so so tiny that it's really difficult to get the measurements accurate. As pp have said, even a mm is a huge difference.

My fingers are firmly crossed for you Flowers

Thanks for sharing fern
It seems to be 50/50 whether this situation has a happy ending. The 4 weeks wait until 12 week scan is going to be awful Sad

Mars, can you book a private scan? It may be £££, but surely it would be worth it to give you an answer sooner? How are your symptoms?

The scan i had on sat was a private one, can't really afford another. Had to drive an hour to get there too. Tbh i am not feeling very trusting of private scan now, after the sonographer just told me i must have my dates wrong. Surely they should flag it as a concern if you measure 9 days behind? It is.an awful lot.

Oh I see, I didn't catch that. When my sonographer put me behind my dates she rescanned me for free a week later.

They could flag it as a concern but sadly there is nothing they can do if the pregnancy isn't progressing, and as before the measurements at that time (especially with an abdominal scan) are extremely sensitive and not very accurate so that may be why she was a bit blasé. Doesn't make things easier for you though.

Push for another scan with your EPU then. That's what they are there for. I'm sure your midwife will refer you.

I'd speak to your mw, explain what happened and ask if there is any chance of a referral to EPAU.

I've known this happen with several people at private scans and for this reason would never have a private scan early on (may have one later though). Some of my friends were fine and now have very healthy babies but some miscarried a few weeks later. Some of these the sonographers told them their dates must be wrong and some took this to be true, others worried none stop until there was an outcome. It's just so worrying. They are so tiny at that point an accurate measurement must be really hard.

I really hope it works out for you.

I had a scan and was convinced I should be 8+1 weeks but was only 7+1. It seemed like such a big gap at the time and I was absolutely convinced of the worst but I am now 29+1 and all is going well. My dares never caught up which meant I got my bfp on day 9. My scan was an internal so should have been accurate, so don't lose hope!

My baby was put 12 days behind then at 12 week scan hed caught up so was 6 days behind at 20 week scan he'd caught up fully to our dates and was classed as big baby as apparently they don't change dates after 12 week scan.
